• Lessons in Draft: First Taste of New Phyrexia   14 years 6 weeks ago

My opening hand for Round2 Game3 was Priests of Norn, Barbed Battlegear, Mirran Mettle, 2 Forests and 2 Lands. I forgot to fix that.

I had not considered the Shrine. Good call. I realize the big guys (dinos) are better with Triumph than a bunch of 1/1 infect dudes. I mentioned that throughout the draft like when considering the Rotted Hystrix that I otherwise wouldn't consider. With P1P2 I was forcing or cutting Green at the same time as infect, and I wanted the Elf for early hits. It worked pretty well in its role. I got an early concession in the next to last game, it got in just enough early hits to give me the win in the screen shot in the late game. Granted, I probably take that down with out the elf. It played a nice late role against the Mortis Dogs in Round1 Game3. Okay, that was results oriented, but the point was they played a nice role in the deck and I liked having two. I see it as a 5th pick kind of card, higher if you are infect and far lower if not. Right now, having just one experience in the format, I see everybody dabbling in infect. The 50/50 deck I created is what I envisioned from the first pick on. The Shrines, I have not quite figured out. I mean, they can be awesome, or they can be nothing, and you have to be aware of that. What do you all think of the Shrines?

  • Lessons in Draft: First Taste of New Phyrexia   14 years 6 weeks ago

p1p1 Correct pick, but there is no reason to force infect at all with it. All you need to do is get a few creatures on the board and attack with triumph and you win. If anything, its better to take high power creatures with a triumph of hordes deck, like playing it in the dinosaur deck.

p1p2 there was no reason to even consider the elf. The white shrine can win games on its own, and has amazing synergy with your first pick.

5 people playing blue explains the late blightwidow and rotwolf. Pretty good deck.

    Keep up the good vids!

R2, beasting his land prior to his main would've been best as cme said above, but even missing that, beasting his bargain does very little, almost nothing; better to hope he screws up and passes priority to you with an LED in play, which he did casting duress with LED in play, then beast the LED.

You mention in the deck tech that you should almost always get key first with tezz, which is correct, but in the matches you never do this. This was especially relevant R4G1 where he would be forced to smash with worker+factory and you'd have key+monolith leftover and he wouldn't have been able to stip mine you that turn or empty his hand.

Another great look at block. I liked the rage extrator seems like my kind of deck. and next week sounds great. especially considering to went to my first fnm in 4 years last friday and got 8th out of 30.

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

    Hey Whiffy,

    Love the videos.

I like the deck as well. I have played Wilddog several times with your carbon list. It is pretty solid.

I will build this and try it out (need 2 more monolith's :/)

Gotta get them added to my database

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

Really poor logic, few of the cards in a deck win the game by themselves. It's about getting yourself in the right position so that their busted stuff doesn't go off before your busted stuff and protecting your busted stuff while it goes through. I wouldn't FOW most 1cc spells but if the opp isn't real bad I will misstep them for zero mana and 1 card all day long. As you guys have said this format is a joke, delaying their joke is pretty important to delivering your own punchline first.

I was thinking that with brainstorm you're pretty likely to hit another blue card, but if she M&Ms your brainstorm I can see the tough spot that puts you in though otherwise being able to shuffle stuff away you don't want with imperial seal seems good, but you may be right.

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

Now that makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying.

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

i didnt say it was crap, but the fact of the matter is, mistep is a delaying tactic, it does not counter game winning spells, it counters utility spells. Spell pierce would have had just as much impact on that game, and playing double mistep gave her one less draw step as 3 5/5's were lethal since she paid life to cast the misteps. And i was not holding onto force of wills for mistep, but rather the 2 and 3 cc cards that win the game out of oath.

You may need to take steps on your pc to secure your accounts. Get some serious cleansing aps and get to work. Don't forget Hijack this and Spybot Search and Destroy amongst the programs you get. It might not be on your computer but if you cleaned your account twice and each time changed your password then your pc is probably compromised.

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

Not following that logic. You were running counter magic as well and so because of that your opponent running and resolving misstep is a bad thing for them? Not seeing it. I can see where you could say it isn't sliced bread since it didn't win but it isn't crap either if it did it's job. Just the rest of her deck didn't do it's job etc. Keep in mind that while I don't play classic now I did own many FOWs at one time and they all saw play. They did not always win the game either...

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

this may have been the correct play, however it would have made zero difference in the outcome of the game except i would have 2 tapped monliths and an untapped one that couldnt cast anything.

Ok so i have cleared out porn twice from my account, changed my password and sent a e mail to you tube to try and stop this, if it continues i will have to create a new u tube account, sorry for the strange inconvience.

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

I needed to keep brain storm in my hand to fuel force of will.
and she resolved 2 misteps against me and still lost, i would say that qualifies as not so good.

  • Limited Edition: Diving Into Triple New Phyrexia   14 years 6 weeks ago

Hey man, nice article, just wanted to point out a few things that I would've done differently in the draft (don't give up hope yet! keep drafting triple NPH!).
I think you overvalued the 3/1 fliers, they are good, but I wouldn't have taken the first one over Gremlin Mine (which is good cause everyones playing the Phy-mana creatures)
Second, and you did say this alot, the flip flopping on the colors would've been hard for anyone to pull it out, but I think Pith Driller is stronger than Shattered Angel. The other picks were the third Impaler Shrike over Artillerize. You had the two wellsprings at that point, they essentially become better removal, and same goes for Phyrexian Core over the hated Mycosynth Fiend (though with the 3-colors, it's understandable that it wasn't really considered)

I still think you had a solid deck though, your opponents deck was just nuts (three verdicts!). Thanks for the vids.

  • Hammie's State of the Program for June 3rd   14 years 6 weeks ago

I was looking at that Noble Fish decklist and noticed that it only has 57 cards
in the main deck. What is missing?

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

R4G3, You Cast Monolith and then use it to cast time vault, letting the floating mana go with two monoliths still in hand. Why not cast a second monolith and use that plus the floating mana to cast time vault + the third monolith? This still gives you 'vault but it leaves some mana up for the future so that mud's LD/spheres don't completely lock you out. Still a tough position, but your line left you with almost no outs.

I don't play the format seriously, but greatly enjoy your video series, so if I am missing something obvious please point it out! Thanks.

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

R4G2, not too sure it helps as your draws were quite poor, but did you consider Monolith > Monolith + float 1 > Monolith + Time Vault? Leaving you with an untapped Monolith, 2 tapped Monoliths + TV in play after he Waste/Strips your lands.

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

vs catweasel wouldnt brainstorm first then imperial seal after have been better? (the comment about mental misstep not being good vs your deck that's like 1/2 1 cc spells is kind of funny, I think a lot of folks just don't want it to be good, self deception and all, ya know maybe all those bad 1cc spells should come out if theyre some crummy and not worth countering for free)

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

R4G2 why didn't you play the lands so you could have cracked the fetch after brainstorming? Might have given you more options after all his LD.

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

Really appreciate the videos whiffy, its nice to see something that isn't 4 x Stoneforge 4 x Jace TMS. But I think your youtube account was hacked unless you really wanted to upload the adds for Russian porn...

  • Hammie's State of the Program for June 3rd   14 years 6 weeks ago

I appreciate the draft strategies you provided, but just wanted to slightly correct one small statement. Numbing dose doesn't work the same way as Enslave. While the creature actually deals damage to the owner with Enslave, thus causing poison counters if it is an infect creature, with Numbing Dose it simply says "At the beginning of the upkeep of enchanted permanent's controller, that player loses one life."

Just a minor thing, but figured i'd mention it :).

  • Conqueror & Commander, Vol. LVI: Zirilan of the Claw   14 years 6 weeks ago

Safe Haven could be used as another way to protect/recur your dragons.
With a Crucible of Worlds it even becomes repeatable.
Granted it's a lot stronger with Sun Titan but it would still be functional.

And of course I've already discussed with you the merits of using search lands with Rings of Brighthearth.

  • Limited Edition: Diving Into Triple New Phyrexia   14 years 6 weeks ago

I actually did consider it, but I decided not to because I had exactly 1 out (Sensor Splicer) to just survive the following turn, and even then I'm still far behind. I weighed that chance against him knowing I have Apostle's Blessing in games 2 and 3, and then decided I'd rather try to get him with surprise in the next game than to try to claw my way back into this one.

And yeah, I'm done with Triple NPH now that it's out of my system. Time to focus on the real format!

last week i told enric to spend 50 cents on a brown voltaic key, i have 4 and played with a silver one :(

  • Penguin TV - Turbo Tezz   14 years 6 weeks ago

    I don't get it...what's the irony there?
