What about labels like "good" and "pacifist"? :p

What matters aren't the words used but the passion felt and expressed while doing so. The fact someone is a "jerk" to someone else for playing a deck they hate playing against should not be lost in the political correction of name calling thing. They could just as easily be called "meaney" or "griefer" etc. Same emotion. It is valid even if the pejorative isn't.

"Furthermore, every format has a boogey man, something that is pervasive and reviled"

I thought that was Dredge! =P

Yeah, yeah, I know the context... but as I explained online, I just think labels like "jerk" or "dumb" aren't good. Then again, I'm a pacifist Canadian so what do you expect. ;)

  • Yawgmoth's Soap Opera Episode 17 : For real real? Not for play play?   14 years 5 weeks ago

I know we chatted online, but after hearing this i feel like your taking the quote out of context, especially in light of the entire podcast where i heartily give shops kudos and endorcments.

Im specfically talking about how the meta changed and the player base played more fish and less shops.

Furthermore, every format has a boogey man, something that is pervasive and reviled, mostly because of its dominance in said format.

Shop is our jund, caw blade, faeries, survival, etc, etc...

Looks like I had a mental mistep of my own *rimshot*

I really dont like infect in NNN in regards to blighted. Viral is indeed awesome but he works better if you arent splashing for him, he gets insane when you can proliferate more than once if you have nothing else to do.

I do like Artillerize, dont want I remember what I picked over it.

  • Pauper Standard in Brief: MPDC 12.12 Metagame   14 years 5 weeks ago

A great way to finish off regular season play. That new UR Redundant deck is definitely worth a look. I've been working on Kuldotha Red basically all season and still running into walls despite its fast clock if it gets lucky. SupergrooveRock's deck is just a turn or two slower on goldfishing (still pretty fast, btw) but its real strength is making it's own luck and breaking through control decks' life totals. I only had to play a few games with it to change my plans for the SPDC series Worlds this past Thursday. I didn't make it very far, but another player (Jeketerri) took it to the Top 4. My guess is it's going to stick around next season with an opener like that.

Just noticed that a couple of images seems to be missing. Here they are:

  • Yawgmoth's Soap Opera Episode 17 : For real real? Not for play play?   14 years 5 weeks ago

first, congrats again on making it.

second - year one, some of the writers came a day early and got interviews with WotC staff. You might ask about that.

third - if you want to talk community team strategy anywhere, lead off your article, post or thread with "Confidential: Wizards People Please DO NOT READ" or something like that. Wizards respected that year one, but the one time I forgot, I found out that almost every wizard player had read my article.

fourth- the community helped brew decks. They could use some tweaking, but they provided a good starting point. The format is complex, and the extra minds helped.

Fifth - the biggest problem was keeping track of which decks had which cards. We had Goggle Spreadsheets, that listed decks, and let us check for duplications. We gave the team members permission to edit, and made the sheets public so the forum folks could comment. Just use the no-WotC disclaimer at the top, and you should be fine. The Google sheets also let us copy the decks into notepad and then MTGO easily.

sixth - as bad as they are, you probably want to use the WotC forums for discussion. Probably every one of the team members has a forum they prefer - ClassicQuarter, ChannelFireball, etc. However, I would bet heavily that at least some team members are not members of at least one of the forums. Moreover, Wizards want to push the forums, so they will be happier if you do.

seven - get an email list set up, and get the pros involved.

eight - WotC will probably give you god accounts. Use them. It really helps to playtest your decks. In year one, we used the CCC room on MTGO for a few weeks prior. We advertised that in the forum, and we often had other players willing to build decks off our spreadsheet and playtest against us.

nine - WotC also set up special drafts for us - but that might have been because we were drafting Invasion block year one. However, if you ask, they may.

    ten - enjoy yourself.

on a side note - hearing an oath player (which shuts down 75% of decks people might want to play) complaining about Stax (which shuts down a different 75%) is, well, call it ironic.

  • Jackalope Herd special   14 years 5 weeks ago

You can exploit phasing to some degree to remove some of the drawback. With Teferi's Veil, you can attack with the Jackalope, then cast whatever spells you want (including another Jackalope) in your second main phase. This could allow you to go down a more controlling route, since you can cast board sweepers once your creatures are safely phased out.

  • NPH Sealed and Triple NPH   14 years 5 weeks ago

You spelt "metal mistep" instead of Mental Misstep :>. Currently it's worth around 3-4 ticks so you may or may not have picked it up.

I think the 2nd pick could have been Blighted Agent.

With your 4th pick. I think your undervaluating the Artillerize. It's very flexible, is a great finisher and is good against certain removal in NNN (Parasitic, Forced Worship) and can deal with nearly all the cards bar some bombs.

With your second pack it's interesting that your willing to pick up a Deciever Exarch but not willing to take a Viral Drake. While the Splicer wasn't a bad pick, I think the Viral Drake is on level of being a bomb because of its repeatable Proliferate ability.

I have a problem with some of your price charts. Cards like Time Spiral, Grim Monolith, and Sun Titan have been going down a fair amount but are shown as not budging at all. I'm assuming that this is because MTGO traders hasn't sold any at their outdated prices (i.e. Time Spiral at 23 when its more like 14 and such). I know MTGO traders is associated with puremtgo so you use their prices, but it wouldn't hurt to cross reference once in awhile (supernovabots.com is a good one).

I'm happy that you decided to continue this series as your last few articles have been the perfect Friday wrap up for news, events, and everything else that has happened during the week. It's nice that someone can log on here and catch anything they may have missed.

Is there a limiting number of characters that wizards will put on cards at this point in time? I remember some of the older cards with walls of text and know they've made efforts over the years to simplify card text and think they have done well with it. But do you think that some cards may actually not get printed because of the length of the text on them? Will they not use a smaller font size?

I like the "died" phrase better than "goes to graveyard" because I think it's easier for newer players to understand in relation to tokens. When my brother and I started playing years ago and weren't experts on the rules, we didn't know if tokens trigged goes into graveyard abilities because they weren't static creatures that would sit in the graveyard. I think this is a good simple change that will help newer players.

Even if he did come back Prime is far too fair without vala or eldrazi lands, certainly good, but too fair to matter a ton.

  • NPH Sealed and Triple NPH   14 years 5 weeks ago

I'm not somewhere where I can watch the video, but I had fun in the NNN draft. I went 2-1 largely on the back of a Mortis Dogs / Artillerize combo (I was able to draft 3 of each). But I hear you on pulls, of the 5 packs I opened (three in the draft and two for prizes) I got 3 Chancellor of the Dross and no Mythics. I hate opening packs. :(

Anyway again thanks for this Pete. Glad you are carrying on Hammy's work Also glad you left out the rant. I love that you are an ardent thoughtful real person with real feelings about many issues but I think you often (like myself) focus too much on the negative.

I was going to wait to see if M12 was going to have the titans. There was rumor that it was and I was worried that Primeval titan was going to shoot back up. I picked mine up when it was $29.xx. It seems like someone tied a cinderblock around the ankles of Primeval Titan and through it overboard into the sea of plummeting prices.
