• Diaries of the Apocalypse: Tribal Week 87   12 years 42 weeks ago

my Personal favorite combo (and most used) in my deck was Knight of the Reliquary with either a Cataclysm or a geddon effect :D just add rancor or a planeswalker and go all sorts of nom on the opponent.

  • Budget Commander - Momir Vig, Simic Visionary   12 years 42 weeks ago

Interesting deck. I like the inclusion of Conundrum Sphinx, even if it is a pretty sub-par card. The thing that disappoints me though is the inclusion of Seedborn Muse/Teferi. It seems like every single Momir deck runs these two. And most players rush them out first thing. Fortunately you aren't running a ton of recursion and you're running a budget deck, but still it's super annoying.

  • Budget Commander - Momir Vig, Simic Visionary   12 years 42 weeks ago

Has anyone logged onto the new interface since the re-release? I'm wondering if they've fixed the command zone so that it isn't just sitting in the middle of the battlefield without a floating window.

  • Budget Commander - Momir Vig, Simic Visionary   12 years 42 weeks ago

Agreed, you gain a lot of political power if you switch to Edric, which I didn't include due to my budget restriction. However, you lose a ton of deck power in doing so. Momir's ability to tutor up everything you need is just so strong.

  • Budget Commander - Momir Vig, Simic Visionary   12 years 42 weeks ago

Early on you focus on ramping and tutoring answers to the board and then when you can you power out your win conditions. I'm 2-1 online with this list, but your mileage may vary because 4player FFA has so many variables. I think it's fun, but there's only one way to find out!

I have one more article in mind and for that I'll add a recording of a game so you can see it in action.

  • Budget Commander - Momir Vig, Simic Visionary   12 years 42 weeks ago

I'm hesitant to play a Momir Vig deck, since it is often associated with broken combos. You'll typically be the first person to be ganged up on, because people are afraid that you'll be doing broken combos. I think you get more value out of playing Edric.

  • Drafting with Idiots: M13 #1   12 years 42 weeks ago

    I misspelled arctic. :/

  • Taking Command #3   12 years 42 weeks ago

For some reason I thought that was as commander not format wide :( I dont really understand that. He doesn't have the power of say Emrakul.

  • Taking Command #3   12 years 42 weeks ago

I agree Griselbrand would be good in the deck, and if he wasn't banned I would definitely make room for him in the deck.

  • Taking Command #3   12 years 42 weeks ago

Yeah I thought I'd have to add more discard too, but in games it seems like every time I would want a discard effect I draw one. Maybe I was just lucky that week.

Yeah the lack of a game report does suck, and I hope I don't have that problem with future decks.

  • Taking Command #3   12 years 42 weeks ago

The big guy got banned shortly after AVR came out.

  • Taking Command #3   12 years 42 weeks ago

Im surprised you haven't found a place for Griselbrand. He is costly for sure but he combos nicely with a lot of your cards, draws at instant speed and as a lifelinking flying 7/7 is no joke. Additionally he doesn't carry quite the onus as Necropotence does as he is easier to remove and people wont view him as the same level of threat.

  • Budget Commander - Momir Vig, Simic Visionary   12 years 42 weeks ago

Thanks for the interesting article. The Spike part of my brain wants to know: How does the $15 Momir deck do, overall, in terms of wins and losses? The rest of me wants to know if it's as much fun to play as it looks. :-)

  • Ars Arcanum: RGD Draft and RTR Mechanics   12 years 42 weeks ago

Wow, this was some fantastic in-depth information!

I only had time to draft one Ravnica event last week, and I went with "traditional wisdom," falling back on what I recalled from drafting Ravnica ages ago. For me, Boros/Orzhov/Rakdos (WBR) has worked well in the past, giving me access to cards like lightning helix, mortify, and all the best red and black removal spells in all three packs. I won, but it's fascinating to look at the statistical data and I do agree that white tends to be the weakest color in the block by a good margin - I think I picked only one card that was mono-white, that being the guardian of the guildpact, which is always solid.

I wish the events were still up so I could test out some of the tips and such from your article, to see if my personal experiences tended to agree with the empirical evidence over time.

Regarding your analysis of the mechanics, I agree that they all seem very tempo oriented. A well drafted populate deck is likely to have an amazing late game, since the populate spells become absurd once you're copying the more powerful creatures, but next to useless when you're making a 1/1, much as you said. However, I wouldn't say this mechanic has me worried. I'm more concerned about the Overload mechanic, since top-decking an Overload spell late game will tend to lead to some blow-outs, much like the swingy feel from hitting a miracle late in the game. I imagine many players will be on the verge of victory, only to get their whole team overloaded in some fashion, or have the enemy team go nuts with something like the Leap of Flame variant you suggested. Note that for the cost you speculated on, you'd only be able to Leap of Flame two of your guys, so a more likely cost would be 6 to overload such a spell, and it would still be a bomb.

Thanks for the great article, I can't wait to read more of your stuff when RtR comes out. :-)

  • Taking Command #3   12 years 42 weeks ago

Fun deck. Glad that Chains of Mephistopheles worked out! Interesting that you can get away with so few discard effects, but whatever works. Bummer about the lack of game reports though. I've been there!

  • Yawgmoth's Soap Opera - Episode 64 - STAX and a STICK   12 years 42 weeks ago

Great to see people playing Classic again, even if we're not firing Daily Events right now. I'm excited about the League, and hoping to play in the next season. I'll rely on you guys to put out the information so I can sign up. Thanks for the Article and the analysis of what people are playing, it was interesting stuff.

  • Drafting with Idiots: M13 #1   12 years 42 weeks ago

The thing I miss most when playing MTGO is the human interaction. You might get a few lines of text exchanged back and forth with an opponent, or perhaps a "how's it going?" from a clan-mate or online buddy, but there's no substitute for sitting at a gaming store, talking about cards, discussing the latest books and movies you've enjoyed, and in general just spending some time with like-minded individuals.

I can't speak to what the code of conduct does or does not allow when it comes to three guys sitting in front of a computer making picks together, but that sounds a lot better than three guys on three different computers entered into the same draft, making picks with discussion in order to gain an advantage.

Glad you had fun with it, thanks for the Article. :-)

  • Anything But - Token Madness   12 years 42 weeks ago

I forgot to mention this week that there won't be an article next week, I'm out of town for four days for a wedding/family reunion and I don't want to rush an article out and be in a situation where I talk about a deck with as many mistakes as I did here.. next time around will be a meta week and things will be back on track from there

  • Anything But - Token Madness   12 years 42 weeks ago

haha that can be so very true, I've played it before tho and its not so terrible, maybe its because I'm personally a very fast player and likely to concede to buyback'd capsize >.>

  • Anything But - Token Madness   12 years 42 weeks ago

Another comment on these really big daily events.... they DRAG on. Ugh. I'm in a 65 person one atm and of course there's some hideous post v post mirror matches where someone's trying to kill the other guy when their only threat left is a single seagate oracle or something and the other guys' gone up to a bajillion life with flickered glimmerposts. It's so annoying!

The mtgs primer on the deck says that "The post mirror is one of the most abominable match-ups in the history of Magic, and it will make you hate yourself, hate Magic, and hate your opponent." That's pretty much true ppl, can you please stop playing the deck already!! Storm's an abomination of magic, but at least you can F6 while they're, um, playing with themselves.

  • The Quest for the Classic Crown - Week 3   12 years 42 weeks ago

I agree with the above comment on the game-one mull. The six card is not ideal, but your five cards would need to be perfect to stay with a deck full of card advantage. His deck isn't really a full-blown control build, so he's looking to be faster than most decks with FOW. I'm guessing he has those merely for any sort of combo he might face or for the turn one spheres and thorns. Glad to see you stayed calm when you made the bad click! It can really ruin a mindset.

  • Freed from the Real 186: Mo' Guilds, Mo' Problems   12 years 42 weeks ago

It depends on a couple of factors really. For the time being, it looks like supply could be kinda low. TMNO has dropped in attendance since they instituted the new entry structure (anecdotal), and there are only 4 Thursdays this month to get them.

On the other hand, the the first TMNO is Momir Basic, which will likely draw quite the crowd (speculative). The other factor you have to consider is that they could reprint lingering souls in a MOPR one month and kill any value it may have gained.

If you get them cheap, they could net you a decent return down the road, but there are always risks.

  • Anything But - Token Madness   12 years 42 weeks ago

thanks for the explanation! that is funny it worked out that way, but yea when it happened it was just like..... oh............

    re: stompy

    http://puremtgo.com/articles/anything-fan-fixes

while it is closer % wise this week it is still a decent count behind, last week interestingly enough it tied with Delver for fourth and was closer (I believe) in count

  • Anything But - Token Madness   12 years 42 weeks ago

I gotta be honest, I've seen atleast 50 people make the Standard Bearer/Grapeshot mistake, and I love the reaction every time.

  • Freed from the Real 186: Mo' Guilds, Mo' Problems   12 years 42 weeks ago

TNMO is lingering souls, the new artwork is pretty cool:

    http://community.wizards.com/magiconline/blog/2012/09/04/announcements_-...

What's the supply like on these TNMO cards? Am I silly to think that this could have some value down the track given how widely that card gets played?
