It seems like it would be great + Sneak Attack since the drake gets sacced eot. Then you can corpse dance it or whatever for more fun. OK that last part isn't strictly good advice for legacy/classic but its funny.

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

Looking through the Legacy decks of the week, there were a couple copies in the sideboard. I recall seeing two copies of Gilded in a main deck on some site, but I can't recall at the moment. I'm not sure several copies like that would shoot the price as much as it did.

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

It is a good one, it is also cheap enough in mana to fit into all sorts of Delver strategies.

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

Do you mean Gilded Drake as a way to fight the Griselbrand/Entomb/reanimator/Show and Tell kind of deck? Is it the best option these days?

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

    :)

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

Yeah, Grislebrand and just a lot of Show and Tell around to sideboard for.

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

    forgot rating

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

    Nice work as always Pete.

I hope we get some more OOP drafts to increase supply of some of the older cards. Since WotC has kicked in a bunch of older packs as prize support for the Classic League Qualifiers, I am hopeful that we will see sets like Masques and TSE up for drafting again.

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

Maybe with the release of Griselbrand and the widespread distribution of PDS: Graveborn, perhaps there has been a spike in the presence of reanimator? idk really, but that would be my guess.

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

Speaking of weird price jumps: what's the deal with Gilded Drake? I bought a playset of them a few months back for 2.5/3 each, then sold 3 of them (keeping one for Commander) when they went up to 5-6. And now they are 15 tix apiece?! Is there a super-successful Legacy deck out there that suddenly runs 4 Gilded Drakes?

  • The Twilight: When Standards Collide   12 years 42 weeks ago

Aaah, now I get the conditional part of your sentence. My bad. :)
I agree it's perfectly balanced, to the point people like me never even recognized its competitive potentials at first.

What do you think of the upcoming Gorgon planeswalker? Because my thoughts are just "WANNA WANNA WANNA WANNA!", but I'm in a big Golgari phase right now and RTR will just make it worse. In this case too, I can't really say if she will see big competitive play, and it's again a matter of CMC.

The story of my Post deck was: during last week's Dragonfight I saw slug360 trying it for the first time, using some pro list both of us found strange somehow (like, no graveyard hate of any kind in the sideboard: is it a common thing in the current pro scene? Because in the little, humble world of PREs, you'd still really need something to stop Unburial, eternal zombies, flashback, and such). I realized how fun Trading Post is, so this week I wanted to give it a try myself, and came up with this reworked, not really rethought list: http://www.gatherling.com/deck.php?mode=view&id=2040

Hey put together a list and try it out. Sounds nasty.

  • The Twilight: When Standards Collide   12 years 42 weeks ago

The Ion Storm deck in particular looks like a lot of fun. I had not given any thought to combining it with Undying.

With enough cards that add Counters, slumbering Dragon does look like it could make for a Comboish deck, similar to Infect. I think there could be a version with possibly adding Apostles Blessing to protect it, and fling for a quicker kill.

  • Diaries of the Apocalypse: Tribal Week 87   12 years 42 weeks ago

I had similar thoughts but I wondered also what they were thinking. :p

  • The Twilight: When Standards Collide   12 years 42 weeks ago

I thought the two sentences gave context to the type of cost I meant. (Converted Mana cost of 4.) I think it is slightly overcosted to be a top card. It is certainly still great and will see play as you said but if it was 3cmc people might compare it to cards like Cursed Scroll. As a nonmythic 3 cost would be the sweet spot. I am thinking the R&D dev team realized this and deliberately notched it down a peg to keep it from being in anyway broken.

.74 seems insanely cheap but that's drafting for you. Everything drops.

Congrats on your win. I'm curious about your deck.

  • Diaries of the Apocalypse: Tribal Week 87   12 years 42 weeks ago

And I have to say, you really don't have much luck with your pairings, you got mihahitlor, Nagarjuna and DirtyDuck, aka #3, #4 and #5 of the All-Time Ranking! (And #1, #3 and #5 this year). Since I was hosting (plus, they're stronger than me, my ranking is mainly the result of my committment), and Nemesis isn't currently playing, there was no way to engineer a harder tournament for you!

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

I needed a copy of LED this week, so I fired up the old hammybot to see if he had copies. There were two, so I snagged one. Actually made me feel good about dropping a hundred tix on an artifact that makes me dump my hand!

Just won a Standard PRE with Trading Post.dek (WRG version, G only for Thragtusk). I stand corrected from my opinions on the Post back when I wrote my evaluation article about M13. I thought it was a cute card and a great design, but I was somehow skeptical about its competitive applications. It's powerful instead, flexible, easy to use, never dead, it's something the opponent in game 2 will learn to deal with at sight. It's the kind of card you have to try and play to fully grasp. It's more in the same league as Birthing Pod (insane card advantage and deck-seizing centerpiece) than Druidic Satchel.

I don't get the part where you say, "The downside is the cost. At three converted mana cost, I am pretty sure it would sit at the top of the non-mythics list for m13." Are you still talking about the Post here? Because it's not 3 CMC, and it's pretty cheap right now (at least, 0.74 for a highly playable rare that defines an archetype sounds cheap to me. I actually suggest everyone interested to buy a playset asap; it's true that SOM block rotating out will harm it, but we don't know what will happen during RTR block, and it will live up until M14 for some months as well. Things might suddenly go crazy).

  • Budget Commander - Momir Vig, Simic Visionary   12 years 42 weeks ago

Good point. I try to blend a mix of fun cards with competitive ones, which is why both the sphinx and teferi both make the list. Everyone has their own tastes though.

The next article will have the same blend, but this time I will be adding alternative card suggestions on top of non-budget suggestions. I hope that'll appeal to more people and recommend more ways to sculpt the deck according to their needs.

I love this series. It's so helpful. Thank you!

  • The Twilight: When Standards Collide   12 years 42 weeks ago

Hey MCM thanks, I too, really enjoy midrange decks. People assume you are doing one thing and you do something else and they sometimes get caught between the zig and the swerve.

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

Hey Pete, thanks for these articles they help alot when I go looking at card prices. I was surprised at (Goryo's Vengeance)prices since I been look at Kamigawa cards that effect the modern format. Once I look up the card I learned it uses in several modern reserection decks so thanks for the info and keep up the good work.

  • The Twilight: When Standards Collide   12 years 42 weeks ago

Hey love the article and your decks for modern are awesome and I hope one day I can make decks like that. Dead Rock seems to be my favorate I love Midrange decks they play what people think are bad cards but they work really well.

  • State of the Program for September 7th   12 years 42 weeks ago

As usual thanks for continuing this series. It seems like a lot of work. I would love to see a few more commentary articles from you from time to time. I think your voice in the community is both a strong one and an important one.

I'm almost an Ancient one! :p

I enjoy Singleton events and though I mized the building of this deck it was a lot of fun. Thanks for running the event, Kuma. Hopefully, I will get a chance to attend more of these events. Good draws, + unlucky opponents + wraths + swords + nasty fliers = ggs. Miha's deck is the only one I lost to and that was more of a nongame set since I flooded out game one (the mana needs more balancing imho) and famined game 2 after 2 lands. I was pleased also to achieve the topical prize, so thanks Clan Leys!
