• Cracking the Code: Smart Practice.   10 years 21 weeks ago

I never let my natural lack of talent in anything get in my way of drawing, painting, singing, writing songs, writing prose, playing guitar, playing chess, or playing any game really. Practice is definitely not overrated.

I will say I don't agree with your analysis of Sylvan Caryatid. Yes it isn't a kill card in itself but it is highly versatile and with decks that have greedy mana bases (because this IS a slower format now) caryatid makes a big difference. I would strongly suggest thinking hard about replacing it as a sideboard out.

That said if you are siding in Anger of the Gods or the like, and you know your opponent might then it becomes less good. That still doesn't make it bad. Just less good and the practice bears on knowing how often it is not good enough to keep.

I think it is also important when you practice to not always just hit the Tournament Practice room. There are times where you need to up your game and play for higher stakes to "make" yourself play better. Even if it is just a 2 man or something. The quality of people you play against also make a big impact. You could win every week at FNM then head to a Grand Prix and feel pretty silly. No matter how well you know your deck it helps to know how other competition plays and thinks.

  • Complete Limited Set Review For Fate Reforged - Uncommons   10 years 21 weeks ago

Yeah it is definitely my favorite. Whenever there is a card that tickles my fancy SO much I try to account for my own preferential biases. I actually wrote and submitted this last week before I got to read all the other reviews from respected pros so now that I see that this is a shared opinion I'm more likely to bump it up another notch. I didn't get to play with it at prereleases though so that is unfortunate.

    Indeed!

Armageddon doesn't care if you sack your evolving wilds or not. Only difference would be one extra land in the yard.

  • The Perfect Game: RW Tokens in Standard!   10 years 21 weeks ago

Fixed! Thanks for letting me know.

  • State of the Program for January 16th 2015   10 years 21 weeks ago

    And Armageddon IS a thing.

  • Complete Limited Set Review For Fate Reforged - Uncommons   10 years 21 weeks ago

I say the best uncommon is the sabretooth. If Silverblack is still available I would be using the sabretoohs's ability a lot to put back a lot of ETB cards effect.

  • Modern Adventures with Splinter Twin   10 years 21 weeks ago

Well, anybody that listened to you and picked up Splinter Twin while it was cheap made out pretty well today. ;) Amazing how high the price jumped.

    Other cards that bumped today:

The BGx trifecta of Tarmogoyf, Dark Confidant, and Liliana of the Veil
The set aside Blue cards Snapcaster Mage and Cryptic Command
The Dredgey Things like Vengevine - Promo Version went from 5.50 to about 8.00 in less than an hour. Then it went a little higher.

A crazy day to be sure. As expected, folks are going back to the pre-established ideas that were good prior to Khans. Once the bans are in effect on MTGO, expect to run into a lot of the ol' favorites again.

In Commander, if it is a ETB untapped fetch (Onslaught, Zendikar, KtK, Mirage) I wait until needed to crack it. If Evolving Wilds, or the like, I wait till just before my turn mostly because you never know if someone "group hugs" with an "everyone draws a card", which may change what basic land you grab.

  • The Perfect Game: RW Tokens in Standard!   10 years 21 weeks ago

You're totally correct; thanks for catching that. The mainboard is 56 cards, so it's missing exactly 4 Eidolons. I'm working on getting it changed now.

  • The Perfect Game: RW Tokens in Standard!   10 years 21 weeks ago

I don't see Eidolon of Countless Battles in your list.

  • State of the Program for January 16th 2015   10 years 21 weeks ago

It was definitely more important in the old days when hand denial was a thing. Because seeing what was in someone's hand gave you a ton of information if they didn't match their art. But probably not such an issue these days.

  • State of the Program for January 16th 2015   10 years 21 weeks ago

I doubt it has much impact too. It's one of those mantras that gets repeated until it stops being questioned. I suppose in vintage and legacy where games are reduced to 3 or 4 turns and everyone has ways to probe the other players hand then it's conceivably going to change the outcome sometimes. In the formats that get played most though your hand is usually secret and different art is never going to matter.

The other mantra about when to pop a fetchland also needs reviewing. In commander for instance everyone already knows your colours, so fetch in your own turn, not at eot of the person before you.

  • What the Fog?   10 years 21 weeks ago

It's definitely playable. However... Since I started to play Pristine Talisman and even before that through Quiet Disprepair I've been doing very well against burn. Game 1 they are favoured but it's very possible to win by using Riot Control, Dawn Charm and Pristine Talisman effectively.

After boarding we are already a huge favourite mostly due to COP:Red and Pristine Talisman + Rest for the Weary. So the question is why do you want to put more stuff for burn into the SB when the current SB is doing the job just fine?

Hydroblast won't replace COP:Red or Rest for the Weary. So it has to replace something else like Dispel/Negate which will hurt our other matchups.

Summary: Current SB is already good enough against burn, adding hydroblast won't make the burn matchup better just the other matchups worse.

I'm hypnotized by your animated GIF.

  • Becoming A Modern Man - UR Delver Revisited   10 years 21 weeks ago

I had to sell an entire modern deck and sideboard to make it.

My collection has only enough rares and mythics to fill a few lists, everything I have uses the same cards practically, I have decks in modern, legacy, and pauper, all delver decks. I think I had 666 cards in my collection at last count (not a joke number).

I'm a player first, collecting isn't my thing. So, if I am not using certain cards, I don't mind letting them go.

Also, in legacy, if you get playsets of Force of Will, that goes a long way, 70% of decks run it. and using say flooded strand over scalding tarn isn't as bad, you almost never need to fetch basics in my experience, and you can all the important duals with strands and deltas.

On Sunday, the Packers will crush Seattle." For 55 minutes...

  • Becoming A Modern Man - UR Delver Revisited   10 years 21 weeks ago

Yeah, getting to play with Brainstorm and Ponder must feel a lot better than Serum Vision and Thought Scour.

I'd like to get into Legacy at some point but the cost is off-putting.

  • What the Fog?   10 years 21 weeks ago

Dont you think that a couple of hydroblast in the side could help the burn match up? It can counters any dangerous spell or destroy a curse. And can be use to counter/destroy atog or fling in the affy match up.

I was thinking about this since i realice burn its one of the two most dificult matchs (the other its delver), so why dont use the best counter/removal against red? If we have red mana, we sure use pyroblast against delver...

  • State of the Program for January 16th 2015   10 years 22 weeks ago

I think matching the basic lands are most important, as you usually see more of them.

  • State of the Program for January 16th 2015   10 years 22 weeks ago

This could be as simple as a special storage binder, one set so that cards moved to that binder would not display elsewhere in your collection.

  • Cracking the Code: Fate Refueled?   10 years 22 weeks ago

Yeah temples are definitely for smoothing and also to provide a little peak later game at what is coming up. It is amazing how often that scry:1 turns the tables.

Not sure on the new cards yet because while the full spoiler is out I haven't let it entirely sink in yet. Most likely candidates are the ones that fit best with hydra's effect. Torrent Elemental is going to be at least a one off, but there may be some manifest cards that fit the bill too. I am not really sure one what comes out though.

  • Cracking the Code: Fate Refueled?   10 years 22 weeks ago

It looks like it's a blast to play. I'm guessing the nine temples are to smooth out the draws a bit because there's more than a few seven card hands in there I'd not want to draw. I have most of the cards lauded and may attempt to construct this if I can free up some tickets but maybe better to wait until after fate reforged goes live.

I'm thinking the addition of new cards will add something to it. Ideas?

Just replace them with Chimney Imps, you'll be fine.
