or find niche decks that can do well in the right meta like rdw and look for your spot. or You know actually try to do more than copy a deck you see online and cast spells...deckbuilding and all the stuff that died around the time the internet started
The thing is that it doesn't really matter how many of the mythics are garbage. The problem is that the best decks contain these mythics and often in multiples and in order to get a playset more boxes must be opened.
Any other arguments are really unimportant. The bottom line is that if you want to play magic competitively you have to open more boxes or pay someone to do it for you.
Great article! I've been lookig for ideas to build new decks and this should be a great source. I'm thinking of some land shinanigans with either loam or crucible. I just don't want to buy cards from zendikar block. I really like the ideas for the invasion blcok control decks so i might try one of those out as well.
Theory yes, play no. 1CC is a paramount concern when playing Kiln Fiend, just play it and see. My first draft even had staggershocks, way too expensive. I have given every card a try, actually sonic blast almost made it, as it's like playing with 8 fireblasts, but it's 50/50 at best, and forces you to hold back mountains. My latest build has no caves now, and lavadarts are main. Don't take my word for it, test and see...(That is if the Fiend can survive one turn :)
3 mythics does not make a set top heavy...one of the most played cards in the set is an uncommon, wall of Omens. So let's refocus this argument...its neither that WotC lied and all Mythics are Ultra-rare god-power brokeness...there are 3 mythics seeing play, they are slightly expensive...thats it, that is the only possible reason people care so much. Well instead of whining about your financial shortcomings to afford these cards either fix your situation or shut up.
I wholly agree with you that RotE is a 'top-heavy' set, moreso than it has any right to be. But you can't just say 'besides manlands' when you're talking about WWK -- the man-lands were a major subset of the rares in that set (about 1/7th of all the rares). And even if none made the top 8, it's worth keeping in mind that Stoneforge Mystic, Basilisk Collar and Talus Paladin have all been major parts of the metagame in recent memory, with Chain Reaction and a couple of others showing up from time to time; that's a pretty substantial chunk of rares from that set, especially when you stack it against exactly one mythic rare that sees substantial play (with very token appearances from a handful of others). The situation's pretty similar in Zendikar, too; you really only have one (or one and a half) mythics out of that set seeing substantial play right now, and a lot more 'normal' rares that are a major part of the metagame. I'd like to wait and see what M11 and Scars of Mirrodin look like before considering RotE anything more than an abberation...
Combo decks are a pain for Landstill as they have no clock to force the combo player into hurried stressful choices.
Landstill is a good deck, but not in the top decks to beat or even decks to watch section-has seen a decline of showngs past year-,however it is a good choice vs aggro.
Savagebeatdown is the designer of the lists we see running around the dailies-he has also ran it into the money a few times and top 8'd the Legacy Premier without use of his sideboard!!- Sik has a good maindeck Config with Snares and Pierces backing up FoW and CSpell.
Dunkle's Zoo list should also be on the rise (plays more like Naya Sligh). His build is potent in this meta and i told him like 2 weeks ago that everytime he sticks turn 1 Goblin Guide he usualy wins-this was when he had only 2 main now went up to 4-Good call.
Didnt even read the article-most of my freinds customize their MODOs-,but i saw T.I.P in your screenie so i felt i had to comment on nothing. We(clannies/freinds) also had Scoot write down the image number for our fav/most played cards for quick ref.
Oh and really Fuk the WotC police !!
i'll load any gawd danmed thing i want on my screen-it's fukin mine and i paid for it- you hear me...dont make me put the T.I disc in the car and drive up to WotC ???!!
I found it to be very entertaining. I'm looking at building some fun budget decks myself. I got an article that will hopefully be published soon about a fun and cheap burn deck in standard. :D
admittedly there probably are some mythics that see occasional play like the big daddy eldrazi in polymorph or as one-of's in some oddball UW decks but nothing major or worth counting high enough.
I was too lazy to look up how many mythics weren't seeing play, but I knew these guys complaining were skewing the numbers to make it look like all mythics were tournament staples.
To be honest, yes, I always found it better than the Gatherer. I think it's easier to navigate and to find your way. And you can always do a price search which is something you can't do with the Gatherer.

Article is awesome -
What about manamorphose over the forgotten caves? it draws, preserves the mana for burn and sets off the kiln field.
I havent tested it but it seems good in theory.
out of 40 packs im sure you opened at least 4 kiln fiends...you just deem them important enough to pick...dont complain about it
I know I just hate paying cash even if only 36 cents for commons I know Ill eventually draft.

What's that prove? I don't know. But there's a lot of junk Mythic's in that list. And a lot more 'playable' ones than I originally remember...

I've been wanting to try this since rise came out. Only 1 problem...40+ packs drafted and only 1 kiln fiend :(

Must have Kiln Fiends NOW. Not only for this but I think they may be amazing in the deck I'm working on in Standard now.
I found it to be very entertaining. I'm looking at building some fun budget decks myself. I got an article that will hopefully be published soon about a fun and cheap burn deck in standard. :D

wow I wonder why I thought that had been removed. thanks flip
I use the colletion tab to view offline sets in the client.
Put a cross in the SHOW-NON MTGO CARDS and change owned to <=0 and volla. I always change the version to regular to take away the foils.
gatherer glitches if you so much as look at it wrong...
now THAT'S the spirit!

But each to his own of course.

better than the gatherer?
This article was so intense, I had to surgically add another pair of balls just so I could read it.
