• The Coalition League season 2, 1st Place Report: Part 2   14 years 36 weeks ago

    Hey Bliven731,

Awesome performance, great record you have going there. I can see why you won the 5th Heirloom PRE. Clearly you got some skills.

Seems like your deck is pretty busted other than maybe missing a bit of removal. double serra, baneslayer, air elemental, mind control, plenty more flying. That's a beating.

I wonder that if the lion is good enough as stall maybe the elite vanguard would be too? or instead for the curve considerations or even maritime guard could grab a slot? (course garruk's and barony own maritime where lion and vanguard trade) Anyhow seems really good in any case.

    Hey gimlycolby,

I love this article, comparing old and new like a caveman recently thawed or a time machine traveler from the past is great, a perspective that's certianly unique.

I'm glad to hear that so much has improved, having played off and on in the same period the small changes over time have made me unaware of how much things have changed to some extent, the proverbial frog in the hot tub I suppose. The idea that sportsmanship has improved is great, and obviously server stability is essential to MTGO going forward.

I wonder why you're so unhappy with $75 mythics in standard but not $75 rares in legacy? Is it because you know the Forces won't cycle out so they're a long term investment?

Hope to see more of your stuff from here on out.

wth is this garbage!!?? get zee out!

  • Exploring Limited: M11 Draft 1   14 years 36 weeks ago

P1P2: Agreed, I undervalued the Hawks too much!

P1P9: Bears are, surprisingly, very playable in the format. Much more than the Hornet Sting.

P1P10: I agree again, that was just a terrible rare-draft.

P2P2: In a vacuum Doom Blade is the stronger card but I already had ways to get the Thief in, so I'm pretty sure it is the better pick for this draft.

  • Exploring Limited: M11 Draft 1   14 years 36 weeks ago

Yeah, I dismissed those cards because they require a huge commitment to black, but you're totally right.

  • Exploring Limited: M11 Draft 1   14 years 36 weeks ago

Thanks for the comments guys, I answered a few of them explaining my (often faulty) reasons. I did not answer everyone to not repeat myself over and over on the same topics, but I appreciate your feedback. Thanks again!

As an aside, it's kind of awesome that Magic has this sort of myth attached to it, if it is false.

Really though, it's elementary whether the event happened or not and it doesn't really change the theoretical point of what I was talking about. Hypothetical examples are very useful for debating philosophy, and the discussions surrounding the alleged bluff are most certainly that.

  • Mana Maze - Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics   14 years 36 weeks ago

Wow the word salad of the bots has become fairly sophisticated...This almost makes some semblance of sense.

  • Mana Maze - Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics   14 years 36 weeks ago

    Sincere thanks for the compliments.

When I used to play paper often enough to have a regular playgroup I had the same thing. People always assumed I had a trick up my sleeve in every situation.

  • Mana Maze - Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics   14 years 36 weeks ago

Me too. I don't much care for the man, and I personally wouldn't vote him into the Hall of Fame, but I consider that bluff one of the finest moments in Magic history.

  • Mana Maze - Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics   14 years 36 weeks ago

As for that thing this is a great thing to have in a proper way. well that is actually the greatest thing on earth that is actually being perverted. Well in a proper way of saying the truth beyond unexplained lies,is just a best way to just escape from a bit of insanity of the fact that is not delivered. Well as of that case thing will reshuffled from the original to the reversed side of the original.

Battlegear could be used as removal no?

  • Heirloom Constructed: Godfathers Part 3   14 years 36 weeks ago

    Drbenwayy,

I am happy with the way things are growing for the format.

Your comment made me think of a couple of movie quotes: "The truth is a virus" -Pump up the volume- "Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes really, pressure and time." -The Shawshank Redemption-

Great to hear you're going to give Heirloom a shot and come join the community for an event soon. Whenever time and motivation correspond to give you a window of opportunity to be at an event we'll be happy to have you regardless of what ragged creation you shamble into the HPRE square with, then again you might surprise yourself with your performance. It's a raw format still and sometimes what's going to work on a given day is hard to predict.

I did sort of rap the little diddy lol. No music in the background or anything and I should have gotten my wife to sing the *slippery* parts but I tried to give an impression of what I was hearing in my head heh.

Thanks for the compliments. I'll try to keep improving in the meantime.

  • Exploring Limited: M11 Draft 1   14 years 36 weeks ago

I think P1P2 is a key pick in this draft. In the abstract, an Aether Adept is the stronger card than Squadron Hawk. However the hawk is a variable strength card, if you know you have 3 other hawks in the deck already for instance, he's likely a stronger card than the Adept at that point.

In the situation where you have no hawks yet, a mid-pack-two hawk isn't as strong a pick as an early-pack-one pick, which is what we're looking at here. In many cases, if you want to consider hawks, you should take the early one or give up on them altogether, since someone will take that first one you passed & they won't let any by them in pack 2 (which is likely what happened here). A pick 2-4 hawk is actually a pretty solid early pick in a lot of cases.

But most important here is your Blinding Mage. You've already got a strong incentive to be in white. Picking the Adept says after just two picks, I'm already going to be trying for two colors - before I've really had any chance to see signals about what's open. Picking Squadron Hawk says "I'm in white, baby! And I'm going to watch and see what second color looks open". Staying flexible later into the pack has a LOT of value.

If blue turns out to be open, you merely traded a little of it for some almost as strong white, and while you send a bit more blue signal downstream, you've cut white better.

In this particular case though, look at pick 3. How much better is it to be looking at those black signals with no second color committment, as opposed to having to consider ditching one of your picks to move into black?

So I think the Squadrown Hawk is the better pick there, generally. Stay more color-flexible when you can!

PV has already gone over this at channel fireball. There is no evidence to suport this play happened. The videos of mike's winning games can be found on youtube, and in none of those videos he makes that play. I'm not one to doubt Maro, but if Long made this play, it wasn't against Justice.

I can see that you've put a lot of work into the format and I'm happy to see that all the work is starting to pay off. I've never been a strong deckbuilder but your enthusiasm is contagious and I hope to participate in this Saturday's event if I can get this Accounting Project done. Even if I build something atrocious, it's still good old fun for a cheap price. If not this Saturday, I'll probably have the time for next week's event.

I like the format of the article, with the option to listen to the recording, links to buy decklists and even the video coverage at the end. I read through the article and didn't listen to the podcast and just wanted to know if you rapped THE SLIPPERY BIG? That would be hilarious, especially with the track on in the background. Keep up the good work.

  • Tribal Apocalypse - Thanks for all the Fish   14 years 36 weeks ago

I have played in several of these events now, and I gotta say, I really dig the offbeat, and cool decks I see. Now admittedly each week it seems that the 3-0 deck is something "harder", (I too was a recipient of AJ's RDW "elementals" deck), but this does not ruin the feel of the event for me. In tourney play (even casual tourneys) you are almost always gonna see someone who shows up to dominate. I like bringing silly fun decks to this event, like "Ape Smash!", it's a good time, but I'm comfortable with the fact that it won't get me to 3-0. The only fun that decks like "legacy fish" deprives me of, really, is the opportunity to actualy "play" a game, mainly because the round is over super fast for me. But even then I get to go watch other games, and see the cool decks I prefer to see.

Mainly I guess I really want to say, that I think that banning/shunning/and mocking "bad" decks isn't as cool as rewarding those people who bring the fun, or creative stuff. Maybe not prizes, but ego stroking.

Anyway, the event rocks, and hopefully I can actually make it this week.

Great article, pithy and useful summation of the thread, and of bluffing.

    Great work mate.

For me... Bluff is everything. I get accused of having a FoW in every deck, and in every hand. Quite simply, I don't. BUT people think I do - which is often better than having the FoW. Having a virtual time walk whilst players play around a non-existent threat is good play, imho.

Calling me a noobface is almost as bad as calling Long an honest player, oh wait that was another article lol

Yea and where are our legacy updates lol

And btw, I've been around, focusing mostly on paper atm, some std online and still occasionally busting out new horizons.

  • Tribal Apocalypse - Thanks for all the Fish   14 years 36 weeks ago

:'( I'm sorry to let you down whiffy! I'm working on another article atm that'll give an update in relation to my time off of writing and maybe at some point in a month or so the legacy articles could come back

simple that way I don't have to hear any one complain about it

  • Conqueror & Commander, Vol. XXIX: Brion Stoutarm   14 years 36 weeks ago

Hey, I would definitely not kick her out of bed. But considering the cost (8 mana) and the headaches (she probably brings the sword to bed with her, and the feathers probably get everywhere), she seems like she would be pretty high maintenance (lots of expensive dinners before you get to second base) and not worth it.

When my wife and I first met, we were at a bar standing in line. The bartender was smoking hot by any standard (dark hair, dark skin, sort of mediterranean), but a completely different type than my wife (tall, blonde, athletic, fair skinned). So in an effort to gauge my interest, she asked me the types of women I like. My response? "I like 'em all!" I'm not the smartest guy in the world, obviously.

The cards that I see people playing that I think are interesting are the individual cards I post in the reports. Sometimes there aren't that many that are "unsung heroes." Everyone knows that Tooth and Nail, Woodfall Primus, and Emrakul are good. I guess the one that I didn't really mention was Tatsumasa. The Ayumi player had enough mana to activate it as a blocker more than once.

As for this deck, the Processor just rocks.

  • Tribal Apocalypse - Thanks for all the Fish   14 years 36 weeks ago

I still totally don't understand why on earth you'd want to ban force of will. That guys merfolk deck was WORSE because of it in tribal. If you want to bring down the power level you should force any deck playing blue to include a playset. Just because it's a super expensive card doesn't make it good in tribal. Like wiffy said, it's great in super high powered formats where you get exactly 1 chance to stop a game winning combo, sometimes before you've even played your first land; making the card disadvantage not matter. In tribal where you're never protecting against super fast wins like that the card disadvantage makes it a poor choice.
