I'm really looking forward to seeing how quickly people will take advantage of the new power available in the format. The vivid lands are a huge shift toward multicolor viability I think.

Sorry, I did not get your decklist right: there are 20 creatures and 16 other spells listed, then the list says 26 lands (for a 62-card total?), but there are just 20 lands listed, which is probably right because the deck clearly doesn't need more than that. Still, with 20 lands, you are 4 cards short to 60. 24 lands still seems unlikely to me. What's the actual build?

It'll be interesting to see the bot/player response with all these speculation articles out lately (I notice even the latest Freed from the Real podcast mentions this stuff). I imagine there'll be a brief (1 week) rise in prices, then it will drift down again temporarily for 3-4 weeks. People's memories and preplanning abilities are historically pretty limited.

Hi there Stasis- if you read the first comment I mentioned the heavy crossover. PureMTGO has a little lag time between submission of an article and its actual publication that isn't really in the hands of the author, and during this gap the Quiet Speculation article came out. If you read my prior articles I always do original material, and didn't mean to run so closely into Quiet Speculation's territory.

I've just tested it. It doesn't work

    I really enjoyed this article.

  • Advancing Your Collection: A Conservative Approach to Extended Season Speculation   14 years 31 weeks ago

I should add that cardbot has now raised his prices on leylines and honor of the pures - but that could just be from the amount I've purchased.

I wonder if someone is going to do something with master of etherium. I think it's a stretch, but future sets could open something up.

  • Advancing Your Collection: A Conservative Approach to Extended Season Speculation   14 years 31 weeks ago
    ...

All the rares discussed did not appear. A lot of them did. He also talks about other stuff, and mentions the previous article in his first comment. So... awkward I gues?

loving these kind of articles keep em coming

  • Advancing Your Collection: A Conservative Approach to Extended Season Speculation   14 years 31 weeks ago

The subject matter for this article and all the rares discussed appeared in article on a different site November 13, 2010. My intent is only to suggest research prior to printing of an article as to not replicate available information and give appearances of plagiarism (ideas, not words as the analysis is slightly different and you do provide target prices). With that said, I think the advice is sound and believe many people, specifically their wallet, can benefit from considering card prices and taking a long approach to card prices.

Thanks for the note, though I'm not sure I'd go as far to say I'm not hemorrhaging money as much as ensuring I stick to my budget lol

great read, I have been eager to see what the new extended will have to offer, hopefully there is some good things there and not just all U control

That was truly a fun event. I lost to goblins and that was a lesson learned. From now on I will add more anti Red to my sideboard. Game one was basically an auto-loss. Then I drew Circle of Protection: Red in game two and I won. I didn't draw it in game three and I lost. That simple.

Anyway, looking with great anticipation to this weekend's event. There are a lot of new cards in the pool now and I can't wait to see what people will do with them.

Oh I didn't mention SOM duals. For the most part I think they're too unstable for tourney play outside block constructed. But time will tell.

Mage is at 0.65? Jeez. I have enough copies but bought around the 1.2 mark. Should be interesting to see.

Wow 100 copies of Honor - nicely done. I tend to stay under 50x of anything just because I want to liquidate quickly (and it's a hobby after all) but at 0.15 each, you're only out $15, which is very cool.

    Void is a great call. Can't believe it's 0.10.

Not sure what Ethersworn Canonist is at now, but anything 50 cents or below would be worth picking a few up at. Has the potential to be a good SOM WW/metalcraft piece, if someone can design an appropriate deck.

Having played vs AJ's deck alot and then seeing various practice matches in the wild I am not surprised it went 4-0. Very slick combo based on the zero costs. We were talking about ways to abuse the hulk and he came up with this and I didn't get it until I saw it in action. Just nuts.

I remember winning a game against one of our local pros with double dark ritual, vampire on turn 1. He never managed to stabilize fast enough to stop the flying beats.

Yeah, I agree Knight is a great buy, I've only gathered about 12, but that's good enough (since I got em at 2). I bought a bunch of Tezzerets when SoM came out and I've seen him go from 3 to 5.5 already, and I expect it to hit 8ish. It's not as sexy as it was now, but it's still a safe play.

Pulse has gone up 1.50 in the last day . . . literally.

I 100% agree on the duals from SoM, but I suspect they'll spike only after SoM isn't the primary set being drafted.

Meddling Mage is interesting at 0.65, as he'll be 2-3 when and if a combo deck hits and he should rise to 1.50 just on EXT being in season.

Mistbinde clique at 0.75 is pretty safe if you dont have a lot of tickets to spend and want to get in on the action.

    Penny cards that should spike?

My two favs are Leyline of the Void (someone will abuse graveyards eventually, and it's 0.10) and Honor of the Pure (when EXT MOCS gets announced for Marchish there will be roughly 300 people who don't play EXT who need EXT decks . . . they'll see white weenie won the pro tour, see that it's affordable and sign up. Honor could easily hit 1 and it's a steal at 0.15 now - which is precisely why I have 100 of them).

I'd be interested in hearing other penny cards from other people, as their great to get with chump change credit on bots.

Lorwyn leaves extended in October, 2011 - assuming they don't change the timetable again (they said in 2008 that Ext would follow its prior rotation schedule until at least 2014, and then this July they changed it up anyway).

Bosk is a great include, yes. The only fetchable dual in extended, so it's fairly safe. I left it out since I was focusing more on Alara, because the Lorwyn cards have already been hit by speculation (Bosk is up from around a buck in June, even though it's not really being used in many ext decks at the moment). It's something that I'm happy to take a chance on, but I'm inviting folks who wouldn't otherwise speculate into very safe bets, and Bosk's ROI at $5 ea is likely lower than a Knight at (now) $3.5-4 - I can see them rising similar amounts, but I'd bet a little more on Knight (remember last extended season, when knight hit 15? Granted it was in Std then, but it was also being actively drafted).

  • Tribal Apocalypse - Inspiration   14 years 31 weeks ago

Yeah AJ's deck is amazing, I was very impressed.

I did think about Riding the Dilu Horse in the Phage deck but blue was so much more stronger with other cards that supported the idea.

Maybe an idea for a Minion deck.

  • Advancing Your Collection: A Conservative Approach to Extended Season Speculation   14 years 31 weeks ago

I've been gathering EXT cards for a few months now and it's a good idea. You forgot Bosk - it's going to go up for sure - it runs with Doran, Knight, Loam Lion, and Pulse decks and it will stay at a reasonable price longer than the obvious includes.

The MOCS announcements will show us exactly when EXT cards are going to greatly spike. And you forgot another good mythic too that is real low and is already rapidly climbing . . . I'll give the name if I get an answer to this question: When does Lorwyn rotate out of EXT?

  • Parallel Universe: Law-of-O   14 years 31 weeks ago

While I doubt I'll be using that card, I approve of the occasional adjustment of card pool for the sake of fun. Ya FUN!

  • Tribal Apocalypse - Inspiration   14 years 31 weeks ago

You may well be right fliebana, I don't have Vat to try it and see if you can use kicker costs. You can with Isochron Scepter.

Anyone care to give this a test?
