It's nice to see another commander author. Good job on the first article. I would of loved to see some game play examples, but not bad.

Some sacrifice options, Diamond Valley, Altar of Dimentia, Ashnod's Altar, Culling Fais, and High Market are all cards that come to mind that fit any deck.

On a side note I just want to say I have played quite a few games with you and they have been enjoyable. One of the few people I don't mind playing.

  • Drafts Gone Wrong   14 years 16 weeks ago

I drafted triple besieged a dozen times or so and I believe I did more poorly then I have ever done in my life with drafting - and this goes back to the first year of MTGO. Never won the whole draft, and only got packs maybe 3 times. I still can't tell if it was all hideous luck (there was definitely a lot of that), if I was playing when too fatigued, or if I just didn't get the format. In any case, I'm quite relieved to be done with it and drafting BSS, as I've had much better luck with scars. I should have known it was going to be an uphill format for me when my first opponent had phyrexian rebirth and the mythic sword. It didn't get much better after that. Too bad, since there were some interesting combos and the cards are kinda cool.

    Especially for a first.

On topic of getting you behind handed to you: even the most Pro of the Pros have wins ratios of around (and i am indeed to lazy to look it up again) 0.6.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Glad you enjoyed the article. I've realised that the video for Game 3 of the Finals is the same as Game 2, must have accidently recorded the same video twice.
Here's the actual video for that Game with some additional commentary:

Appreciate the comments, I'll try Sun Quan (swapping out Wonder) but I can't bring myself to play the ugly rabbit!

Mono-Blue deserves its reputation. When I see someone select Arcum, Teferi or Azami, I sigh a little and resign myself to a frustrating game. Erayo I don't bother, apologise to the other players and conceed. Any deck that just attemtps to power out a combo or a board lock while ignoring its opponents violates, in my opinion, the social contract that EDH promotes and is widely ignored online. I did build an Arcum deck to see it from the other side: played three times, won three times, and it mattered nought what the other players did. Not my idea of fun.

The "money cards" issue I can understand. After I'd been playing a little while I started running an Intet deck with nonbasic hate 'cause I couldn't justify buying all those saucy lands. Back to Basics and Primal Order are fun after they've dealt with Blood Moon. Couldn't bring myself to run Ruination, though. I figured if I stopped wasting money drafting low value sets I could spend that on singles of the cards I wanted. Not everyone has the luxury of money to spend and I appreciate how frustrating it can be when you think it's safe to cast that game-ender and it's met by Force of Will.

The think I find odd abount conceeding to Jace is that it's purely because of the cost. He's very strong but in Cmdr awkward to keep alive with three players tring to kick your teeth in. I tend to get a "scry 1" and "brainstorm" (or two) out of him and that's it. Considering the resources used to kill him for 2UU that's good value - not broken. In my Halfdane control deck the planeswalker I really want to see is Venser.

I uploaded the deck (http://www.mtgotraders.com/deck/viewdeck.php?ID=5462) and it's not cheap, but about $275 of that is in 5 cards.

I did an Hazezon Tamar deck that was ten tix, total (Heirloom). It was complete rubbish but that's because I'm not a good deck builder, not because you can't build a high synergy effective deck on the cheap.

Thanks for the comments, I've had people quit for all sorts of reasons. Myojin of Night's reach I fully understand, though it depends on the board position. Ones I don't get are where the play is on the board, like conceeding when your Tooth and nail being countered by Glen Elendra Archmage.

Great tip on skipping the kicker, much faster!

Thank you for the comments. I like Kederekt Leviathan, I have him in a WUb deck using Halfdane, makes a good Necromancy target but that deck is about card advantage and attrition (couple times got there in the end with man-lands). I'll swap him in for the weakest of the card draw and see how it plays.

If you go into your wizards of the coast file and then the Magic online folder, there is an icon called mtgo_net It loads you directly into the sign in screen bypassing the kicker.

Depending on what OS you run you go into the proper Program Files and then find the WotC folder.

yeah genesis, was like .5 tickets too much for what i had on me. So i figured i would find something i owned to replace it. I had forgotten i had the oracle at first and was like...sweet.

Good article, I enjoyed your writing style. Affinity is a tough deck to cover because there are so many ways you can go with it, I would even not mind seeing a follow up at some point, especially if "Action" has more relevant artifacts.

I'm computer literate but have no idea what you're talking about - though I assume it's priceless info. I just click the MTGO icon on my desktop (which is oddly called renamer). What's this magic you're talking about?

Fantastic work on the article. The format looks cool, sadly I have obligations on Sundays.

  • Conqueror & Commander, Vol. XLVIII: Nath of the Gilt-Leaf   14 years 16 weeks ago

Sweet! Glad to know it wasn't just me getting lucky with the deck and that someone else can do well with it. I had no idea that the Oracle was only a ticket, that's a great inclusion.

  • Mumbling Aardvark #1 - Introduction and casual Commander mono-blue (Sakashima the Impostor)   14 years 16 weeks ago

Nice first article! It's good to see you writing, and you obviously figured out how to use the article editor, which is very nice.

Sun Quan can be good for more stompyness. And if you want to be really funny, try Vizzerdrix. You'll get extra style points if you actually kill someone with it!

Money cards such as Jace TMS tend to turn people off, but I haven't really received a whole lot of complaints. Obviously if people put some thought into deck construction you can make a decent budget deck. The problem is that mono-Blue has a reputation, and when you start dropping high priced bombs people don't want to stick around to get pummeled. Even if you did remove all the Time Walk effects. More experienced players will usually play it out tho.

  • Mumbling Aardvark #1 - Introduction and casual Commander mono-blue (Sakashima the Impostor)   14 years 16 weeks ago

I've had mixed responses to Kederekt Leviathan with a heavy clone element.
It is powerful to reset all other non-lands every turn, but it is also easily disrupted and a bit mana intensive if you plan on trying to protect it.

    Worth considering, anyway.

Very nice comeback Motu. I've been playing tons of Legacy lately and from my experience against/with Affinity, I can say two things:

1- The new Tezzeret is a MUST for the deck. Two copies is enough. I tested three, I tested one and found out that two is the right number. As your deck is full with artifacts, he always gives you what you need at that moment. And his ultimate simply wins games in this deck.

2- I understand your enthusiasm for Etched Champion but it's just another reason why one must play non-targeted removal in the format. Innocent Blood, Pernicious Deed... even Moat or Humility work very well against it. I even remember stealing one with Vedalken Shackles. So yes, it's a very good creature but it never means auto-win.

So if I ever want to play a very offensive deck in the format, I think I would choose Affinity too because not everyone has the correct answers in their sideboard to hate it completely. A few Krosan Grips here and there won't stop it. Goblins on the other hand, are expected in the format and everybody has a way to deal with them.

So yeah, Affinity is a very good deck and both the new Tezzeret and that new Battle Cry 0/1 creature made it even better.

  • Mana Maze - Sealed Fate   14 years 16 weeks ago

Great article and very helpful advice for the new limited format. But how did you only spend $60 for 12 sealed swiss? Was it because you were able to reuse your winning packs for new events? Could you do a breakdown of money spent and prizes won? Thanks! Nice work!

  • Mumbling Aardvark #1 - Introduction and casual Commander mono-blue (Sakashima the Impostor)   14 years 16 weeks ago

well i liked the article. very nice and some of the wishlist things seem nice. I know i was playing black green last ngiht and got down Terastodon, Myojin of Night's Reach, Nath of the Gilt Leaf, Butcher of Malakir, and Kamahl, Fist of Krosa all in maybe 3 turns. Surprisingly the only ones that made people quit were the Terastodon(when i blew up all of one players blue land) and the Kamahl.

As far as the client disconnecting and restarting, dont use kicker, oke for the MTGO_NET icon and click that. Its much quicker. You only need to use the kicker after updates.

  • Pauper - Stompy   14 years 16 weeks ago

Gleeful Sabotage is best in the deck for affinity, but I still don't think you need it. If you and the above people are still having problems with affinity, you need to focus on your play, not sideboards. Additionally, the main areas of worry with affinity, are the atog/disciple/shaman - NONE of which are artifacts. Playing hate in this matchup vs a good player is just a way to lose slower. Run them over, take their milk money, and leave them with a groundswelled wedgie :)

  • Standard Pauper Deck Tech: Metalhawk   14 years 16 weeks ago

    nice deck:)

It's quite a while I don't play std pauper, but WR looks cool, aggro with ca engine? nice! I'm not sure of the moriok replica, you may splash U with 2 trinke mages in places of the replica, more options? Also, leonin skyhunter vs kemba's skyguard?
