Your vlog series is pretty awesome. I look forward to it every week.

I also like the format of the Magic Tournament Show. It seems video editing and formatting are among your skills. Good work. If I had anything to offer in terms of constructive criticism, it would be to slow down a little. Your commentary goes very quickly in this one, and it is hard to process what was just said before you move on to the next topic. Also, since this is for "spikes", you could feature a deck of your own with an explanation of why and how you think it attacks the metagame. Something like TwinPod. I know you featured it in a vlog, but breaking down your list and what you expect to face would be at least interesting.

    Just my opinion.

I understand people often use rogue as a shield when they mean "bad" or "unpolished". I suggested he cut lands which aren't helping his deck, and instead add cards which will make his deck stronger - they happen to be colored. This isn't a shops deck, if the only reason you are going completely colorless is that it is rogue or cool, that's fine, but don't enter your deck into competitive tournaments.

Grand Architect decks are blue decks that play colorless cards, and that obviously isn't what I was suggesting. Mindslaver is a card this deck needs because of Valakut, not because another deck plays it. I would consider it a success it his deck were to become a tier 2 artifact deck.

Your Spike-cast was very professionally done, but it needs a little more polish in the vocal presentation. I personally don't like Evan Erwin's corny jokes, but he has a genuine enthusiasm (or incredibly good manufactured enthusiasm) that engages the listener and makes them interested in what he is saying. You, on the other hand, sound like someone trying to speak clearly and quickly into a microphone.

You need to create some sort of unique style and make it your own. Erwin has corny jokes and enthusiasm, LSV loves puns, Conley Woods sings in his videos to fill air time and is generally goofy - you get the idea. I have no idea what attributes you are good at infusing your videos with, that is for you to figure out. Just make sure it isn't monotony.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

Just because Modern is going forward as a name it does not mean the respective format is going to be Mirrodin-forward. It was pretty likely that Modern was going to be the name of the new eternal format sanctioned by WotC and the Overextended players know that Overextended is not a good name for the official format. The purpose is showing the best starting point (the best starting point at the moment is Invasion-forward without much doubt, and will probably be Masques-forward).

Of course WotC doesn't always get things right but I'm cautiously optimistic that they are paying attention to the players (as they said they would) and in particular to the Overextended data that the players are giving them for free - the data reveals several things about the Invasion-forward starting point and dispels many possible fears that WotC could have about it (such as it being too similar to Legacy - it simply is very different).

As far as I know, there has been no confirmation of the Mirrodin starting point - even the confirmation of Modern (the name, not the format details) was fairly low profile as I haven't seen it in mtg.com since the panel.

    Ivo.

I'm not saying he was completely off-base in his comment but offering an English Class as advice? Come on, that's not necessary. Look at everyone else who gives the constructive criticism of needing to proof-read an article before going up, and you'll see it's done without such a comment as earlier.

Either way, you (and the poster I replied to) do have a point, and I would agree that the author of the article should be a little more meticulous (Josh already took some of the blame, but it shouldn't only be up to him) when it comes to posting an article.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

I too thought the English class comment was out of line..... it should have been a composition class :-P. With that said, congrats on the rogue strategy, but it does seem All is Dust and Lodestone Golem should be auto-adds. I don't think char49d gets the whole colorless aspect and rogue strategy of this deck, but rather is trying to build the tier 2 blue-artifact deck instead.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

You might want to redesign this deck, it has a few problems that are going to hold it back from being reasonably competitive. The first is consistency - you are playing 4 surge nodes, 3 voltaic keys, 3 ratchet bombs 3 contagion clasp and 1 culling dais. These 14 cards have very little interaction with most of the decks in the format, and are terrible when drawn in multiples or in the wrong match.

Thankfully, there is trinket mage, a card that can grab you a chalice, mox opal, surge node, voltaic key or brittle effigy. Treasure mage also grabs you wurmcoil or mindslaver or whatever else. Glimmerpost, Mystifying Maze and Quicksand are almost certainly not better than islands for a splash, which also lets you play powerful sideboard cards like flashfreeze and maindeck cards like mana leak. Preordain doesn't hurt either.

You need to consider, this deck can never, ever beat a reasonable 6 or 7 card hand from goblins or tempered steel. You also cannot race splinter twin, and your sideboard indicates you are well aware of that fact. You need to be more consistent, tutors and filtering are consistency, which is what this deck needs.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

This deck is annoying. I had to play against it the other day with my twin deck. It certainly can sit there and grind it out...and how large Chalices become all of a sudden is really intimidating.

Good show! And I do agree with the first poster. A little more polishing would have made this an easier read...

Also, I would watch out for Creeping Corrosion. That cards seems like it could put a hurtin' on this deck. Granted there is Wurmcoil, but still.

I guess Into the Core is a card too....

He was constructive in his criticism. He offered a possible solution to the problem. This is the type of article that used to hit Puremtgo queues regularly before Josh took over as an editor full-time. Would you want to go through and correct every mistake in this? It's an indication of a lack of respect for himself to present this as work he is willing to display to others and a lack of respect for the site to submit something like this when most articles on this site tend to be pretty polished or extremely polished.

Look, if this showed up on CFB or SCG, he would be derided and ridiculed. Offering a suggestion for a better article next time wasn't rude.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

I am glad that I made a point because in retrospect, it seemed I rambled a little. But you get it.

I think O.Extended could survive, but it is going to be a lot harder when Modern takes off because Shocklands will certainly be another huge factor in both Modern and OX metagames. Now I am no economist, but a rise in demand without increasing the supply = inflated prices. The fact that you will have to spend 100 tix on your manabase alone will make more of the players that have the shocklands want to play in a format with a higher EV in terms of prize payouts. While the PREs are no slouch in terms of prizes, the supported formats will have higher EV and will draw a bigger crowd. It is the nature of the beast.

PRE event players do build great and powerful decks and are among the most innovative players in the game. Just look at the Pauper Standard metagame that PiDave features every week. The difference here is that, assuming you are free on Mondays at 5PM PDT, you can play in a Pauper Standard event for free. Oh, and your deck maybe costs you 3 tix, while the O.Extended cards are inflating as I type this message, and are going to continue to go up as more people hop on the wagon.

Pauper PREs survive because there are multiple formats that aren't classic where you can get a competitive deck for less than 10 tix and the events are free. But the Pauper format supported by WotC, decks cost more and prizes pay more, making things like Invigorate and Daze cost 10 tix a piece.

You see the difference?? Overextended does not have the luxury of ignoring some of the card pool, and is sharing a lot of that card pool with "modern". The supported format is going to make the more powerful cards cost more, and then will becoma a barrier for players of both formats.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

Another question: Where is Lodestone Golem? It seems to me that it would fit into this deck pretty nicely.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

I agree with the fine-tuning of the actual article needed (no reason to be rude and offer an English class though, not even funny...) but great job on going 3-1. I'd also like to know why All is Dust wasn't considered?

Also another question, why not Dismember main? Seems like a pretty good disruption piece that you can at least add one or two-of in the deck. Seems alright with an Everflowing Chalice on turn 2 (one mana open) if you don't have a Surge Node. Opal over a land or two might also be a good idea. Either way, awesome deck.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

I'm definitely on a similar side to apaulogy. I'd never play normal extended, not because I'm uninterested, it's because my cards can't really compete with the power level of the "real" extended metagame. Similarly, if O.Ex was a real format backed up, there wouldn't be such a need for PRE's and my deck would honestly not be able to compete with such strong cards apaulogy mentioned. It's because many of the PRE players (I may be completely wrong on this) don't have such a large, expensive, or really powerful card collection, that there isn't such a search for the "best" deck in the PRE tournaments.

I enjoy the PRE's a lot, and, sure, Modern is obviously the favored (even the only one) on WOTC's radar, but if there are PRE's for overextended, then I'm willing to participate, and willing to share the experience here on this website. I think that's a strong enough reason to keep it as is then completely ignoring it.

  • Agur's View - How To Open Bombs In M12 Sealed   13 years 50 weeks ago

Ridiculous pool for the first sealed. Haven't watched the second but I'll try to later today. I thought Azure Mage attacking into Elite Vanguard was ugly. CL is a great player, so overall well done.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

The deck is great. The writing needs a lot of polishing. Oh and where is All is Dust by the way? Do you think Ratchet Bomb is good enough so you don't consider it? Because mana can't be the reason.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

This sort of deck is hilarious. But yeah you need to polish on writing skills... enroll for an English class in college perhaps?

Anyone thought about 3x Mox Opals over 3 posts?

  • Rogue Play - I Command You, Part IV   13 years 50 weeks ago

Poison is one of my taboos in Commander so I didn't consider Grafted Exoskeleton at all.

I'm glad you liked the game. Bosh is clearly a very powerful general but he's a bit slow. It takes time to set up everything but once you survive the early turns (early turns for Bosh = the first 10 - 12 turns), you become simply unstoppable. In almost all the games I played, I was either the first to fall or the last one standing.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • Rogue Play - I Command You, Part IV   13 years 50 weeks ago

Was the exclusion of Grafted Exoskeleton a conscious one in an attempt to be less Spike-y, or did you just not think of it? I know I had it in my Brion deck, but ended up cutting it. The whole "sac when this becomes unattached" was annoying since people loved to kill the Exoskeleton and that meant I lost Brion, too. I also got some pretty negative reactions. So it isn't an auto-include, but it seems to be worth mentioning.

I also liked the game you featured a lot. No one conceded before their time, and it was a balanced game where no one got blown out. Plus, 23 turns is uncommonly long online. It's interesting to see a game that goes on so long.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

Sanctioning the format will certainly draw people in. The problem is that, again, some of the older more powerful cards from this format are still scarce, even on MTGO (lookin at Invasion block). I am afraid that the combination of people being drawn to the format, the polarization to 4 or 5 powerful cards (Pernicious Deed, Vindicate, Jace, the Mindsculptor to name a few), and the consequent rise in price for these cards will create the same kind of monetary entry barriers that plague Legacy and Vintage IRL, and Classic online. The pool of players will no doubt be larger than those formats online. You will get a larger pool of players for a while, until everyone realizes that it is really hard to win with a deck that doesn't have Deed or Jace.

Of course this is speculative, but you asked how "corporatization" would "ruin everything". I think there would be a boon of players for a while, then it would taper off and possibly die out due to lack of availability certain cards. Think Force of Will and Wasteland...

AND, the point here was that Overextended will probably no longer be a Player Run Event because Wizards is making "modern" the official format. Although they are different, Modern will be supported. Overextended may survive and be somewhat niche, like Pauper, but it certainly has its work cut out for it since Wizards is supporting "their" format. It's sad really because Gavin has worked pretty hard to make O.Extended.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

You have got to self-edit a little more. You capitalized almost 0 times, which is amazing in its stubborness, you didn't link any card names (a.e. cards opponents played that people may want to reference) and didn't give us any meat for thought.

The deck is pretty awesome, but you need to take the time to make your article more readable. Give it a read-through after you've written it next time.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

I so want to take you seriously, but really, how difficult would it be to get someone to check your spelling?
Rouge is a colour. Rogue is a deck.

  • Conqueror & Commander, Vol. LXI: M12 Overview   13 years 50 weeks ago

Doubling Chant is actually one of the cards I am most looking forward to for commander from M12. I have a deck that only uses the worst cards in singleton formats (see Squadron Hawk, Thrumming Stone, etc.) Doubling Chant will be sick in it! It usually takes players about 5-6 turns to catch on to my theme.

    (this is not a joke)

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

I really don't understand how a format can be 'completely' ruined by the corporation. It can change, in ways you don't like, but ruin ... completely?

Personally, I'd like some more people to play against. Wizards making Modern a sanctioned format will only improve things from my stand point. I have my cards, I just want faster firing games with a larger player pool.

  • Conqueror & Commander, Vol. LXI: M12 Overview   13 years 50 weeks ago

    yeah that was the joke

I can't wait for scrambleverse + eye of the storm + hive mind
    + shared fate

It's like pooling everyone's deck into one pile and see what happens.
