It looks like his plan vs countermagic is get a mad bomber (cannon/karn) down and melt their lands, casting a turn 3/4 version of those cards demands 2 counters to not just die, and leak won't be enough (probably) on turn four.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

This deck does run pretty well though. The way it is built has the advantage of synergy. The problem is that the synergy is with a bunch of "do nothing" cards...

    Buried Ruin?
    All is Dust?
    Lodestone Golem?

In addition to Creeping Corrosion being a glaring weakness, I think this deck would lose to UB as it is. Countermagic and discard seem that they would be very good against this deck.

It seems like you could add some Trinket Mages to grab the Chalices, Nodes, and Keys, allowing you to run less of these. Then Treasure Mage could grab Mindslavers (a card I was also wondering about), Triskelions, Wurmcoils, Hellkites, Contagion Engine (yet another card that would be awesome in this deck especially in conjunction with Voltaic Key), or any other of the million 6 CMC artifacts kicking around...

  • Conqueror & Commander, Vol. LXI: M12 Overview   13 years 50 weeks ago

It looks like you have covered most of the new stuff pretty well.

One you didn't mention that I plan on trying out is stingerfling spider. It is relevant removal and a decent defensive body. I have a deck or two that might get some mileage out of that.

For me I think M12s biggest impact is the dropping of the price of the titans. I sold of my Inferno at it's height, and was able to reacquire one much cheaper yesterday. Hopefully I can get my hands on less expensive Grave and Primeval Titans soon.

The card I am most intrigued to give a try is Gidion's Avenger. My mono white Voltron deck can always use low mana cost super efficient bodies to play defense and carry equipment before my general gets going. He could be a useful addition with alot of upside.

I like to play red decks alot so I am always looking for new outside the box card advantage plans for them. I don't know if I am 100% sold on Druidic Sachel as being worth it, but I think it is something I will have to try for myself.

I think green got a few powerful new tools with this set. I just wish I could find a mono green deck that I was interested in playing at all.

This is what I am talking about. These are the cheap counter parts.

By "running good" do you mean getting lucky? I ask because it seems like the case. I think any time a rogue deck is introduced or even one that wants to be rogue it is good to question the card choices. Haphazard choices may indeed give one a lucky/unlucky start just based on match ups and card selection is one of the key problems in deck building. Particularly when examining potential (reasonable) match ups.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

My comment about tournaments was clearly comparing casual decks to competitive decks, don't ignore the context. I don't actually care who enters what tournaments with what decks.

The article isn't titled, "I made a cool deck with no colored lands!" it is, "Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck". I was challenging the author, or anyone reading this, to think about the card choices he made and if they result in the strongest deck. Arguing semantics is pointless, if you have criticisms of my comments about the deck, than make them.

Running good or bad doesn't change the composition of your deck any more than going 4-0 or 0-4. I obviously think the deck was running very good, and needs a lot of work to be a reasonable choice for standard.

Generally though (at least for me) time stretch turns are pretty quick. Attack, play some more dudes or draw cards, pass, attack, etc, pass. I do understand not wanting to sit and wait though, but timewise it is not much more demanding than a couple of turns from an active Planar Portal (for example).

When I read the suggestion to attend an English class, I read it as calm, non hostile, friendly advice spoken in a non mean spirited tone of voice. It's all a matter of how you read and interpret it.

The advice itself is actually good advice. College English courses are the best place, in my opinion, to learn how to write well. I would definitely point to my college English courses as the #1 reason that my ability improved in writing both essays and fiction.

There is nothing wrong or offensive or rude or inappropriate in suggesting to an aspiring writer that the writer attend one of the best places for learning about writing: college English courses.

The advice was sound. The presentation of the advice was fine. The advice was asked for by the writer. I think it's your perception that was off here.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

The fact is that Shards standard showcased the greediest mana bases I have ever seen in constructed formats. Ravnica was pretty bad too. There are 5-color control and zoo variants that are all viable in this format. There are plenty of good spells that give bonuses to basic land types that you can't get with the SOM, Core Set cycle duals, or the "filter" lands from LRW-SHM block. They are good supplements, but I imagine that is why the lands have gone up so much. It'll probably taper off and even drop at some point, but it will be a while until the hype of a new format dies down.

Cards like Deed, Tarmogoyf, Jace TMS, and Vindicate are what worry me. Now, these are not on any reserved list and they could make promos or put them in duel or commander decks. They will be format staples though and they are played in Legacy. Until the supply increases, they will continue to be the most expensive and powerful cards for their respective tier 1 strategies, in my opinion.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

They did get a little bit of a price boost by the brief resurrection of Kaleidoscope.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

Sementics right? But in this case the name will likely stick unless they change the format rules because it is easy to remember. If you listened to/watched Whiffy's video interviews with Worth and co, they spoke on Modern having a potential presense because of that very thing. Modern frames = legal. (Except in specific instances where a card was printed with a modern frame in a theme deck or as a promo only.) This gimmick is what is making the format what it is.

Overextended may become like Tribal and become a sanctioned or at least semi-supported format Online as well (but I doubt it) just because of the support of its player base. But that is going to require a constant campaign and many more PREs ahead.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

I have asked the writer to write a follow up piece that he can show the deck off on. I hope he does so, as I would like a chance to sit down and make changes instead of rushing things. I did him a great disservice today and I apologize to the writer and the site for letting things get in the way. It will not happen again.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

I do not wish to offend anyone but it is clear to me many people could stand a few remedial English courses. It is easy to forget what one learned in High School or even College if one doesn't practice writing. Also I think it is an error many writers make that they do not ask for a second opinion after finishing a rough draft. I had a pact with Godot where we would read articles by one another to catch those many niggling little errors. Between formating and getting links correctly situated and adding photos, and or other images writing an article can be a little overwhelming. It is a relief to have someone else to catch them.

As you say we can't lean wholly on the skills of Joshua since he is a busy guy and also because some errors are just hard to spot when you are scanning for obvious ones. But also perhaps we can be a bit more forgiving of the content of a new author since it takes them time to adjust to the criteria the readers here have.

I am somewhat responding to the whole thread on this topic rather than just your comment by the way.

  • Conqueror & Commander, Vol. LXI: M12 Overview   13 years 50 weeks ago

That deck actually sounds pretty funny! I'm sure people are scratching their heads when they first see Verdant Succession or a similar card.

  • Rogue Play - I Command You, Part IV   13 years 50 weeks ago

Ah, you beat me to the Bosh deck! Looks like fun, although probably a little more controlling than what I am going for. I guess that's sort of necessary, though, considering his mana cost. I do like the Glacial Crevasses tech, that's a neat little find. Good stuff.

  • Agur's View - How To Open Bombs In M12 Sealed   13 years 50 weeks ago

Agree with this. Your own style comes with practice and you are just starting, but in your casts even your cadence has sounded like you are aping Erwin. This is in contrast to your play vids which you already seem to have your own voice in.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

That's nuts, last I remember they were all under $10 when Modern wasn't even announced and Overextended was just speculation at MTGsalvation.

I mean, the shocklands aren't even so so important (in my opinion) unless you want to run a 3+ color manabase with fetches and shocklands. The SOM duals are really really good, and like in my article, only zoo kind of decks (like the tribal zoo I faced) need that kind of manabase. I don't think they're essential, especially for a PRE event.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago
    Yes

Only decks that post 4-0s should enter tournies.

The deck obviously can do some stuff. I like it.

  • Going 3-1 in a standard daily with a rouge deck   13 years 50 weeks ago

he shouldn't enter tournament...he only went 3-1 and made money....

  • Agur's View - How To Open Bombs In M12 Sealed   13 years 50 weeks ago

Interesting to see core set sealed playing out. I kinda figured you'd be hitting the blue pretty heavily, but it was kinda crazy to see you crack two Jace's in two sealed pools. Wish I had that luck! It's good to see that milling is a viable option. I've always been a fan of attacking the library, especially in limited. As you said, bombs are what wins the majority of games, and you have a good chance to strip them out without any chance to cast them. My most successful limited tournament a few years back during TSP had great success running a lot of wistful thinkings and piracy/funeral charms, keeping the other guys hand empty until I could nuke the board, hit bitter ordeal and take everything worth playing out the deck. Good times!

I'm liking the new show, although I agree you may wanna try and spice it up a little. It's really nice to just get the metagame at a glance, but it'd be nice to get some more analysis and such like. I know you've covered most of the current decks fairly recently, but once Standard starts getting more diverse and there are new decks, it'd be nice for you to just do a quick deck tech on them.

  • PRE #1: Overdrive! (7/25) Overextended   13 years 50 weeks ago

The fact is that it is an Invasion forward format.

Plus, I just price checked the shocklands here on MTGO traders. It could be some hype due to a new format, but most of them are commanding price tags that rival their ACTUAL Duel land counterparts, especially the blue ones...Like, did you know that hallowed fountain costs as much as a tundra? Steam Vents are getting $2.75 more than Volcanic Islands. Breeding Pool also > Tropical Island.

    Yeah.
