• Rick's Picks: Sometimes You Just Open a Foil Sorin   13 years 17 weeks ago

I definitely wouldn't have run the red splash. You had them in you hand so many times, but never any mountains and they were just dead draws. I'm a much bigger fan of the undying combat trick in black thats cheap and so mean. Works so great with the white flash creatures too. Drop them into combat, block something you want to get rid of, pay an extra black and you have the same creature with +1/+1. Also it works great with the skirsdag flayer, and doubly awesome if something makes a token when it dies. You end up with a bigger creature, a token and a dead enemy all for 5 mana.

You could have summed up your first post with a lot more grace. Especially when you were focused on him being unprofessional.

There's a fine line between constructive criticism and trolling.

Constructive criticism you've given so far:
    - Pointing out the misspelling in his post.
    - Saying he could polish up his writing ability (while admitting that his content is the videos and not the article).
    - His co-host has a poor audio quality.
    - He should give more insight into why he's doing things.

    Trolling:
    - Assuming he's playing in Tournament practice when he's in fact playing in 2 man's.
    - "You clearly no less than the average modo player about the format and your writing skills are shocking." ("no" should be "know" btw) Mikey K is a forum mod at PDC Magic (where he's been registered for almost 5 years.) He has more pauper matches under his belt than just about anybody else playing the game. He also is co-host of the podcast "Pauper to the People". Yet, you think he doesn't have knowledge of the format? Pure trolling!
    - Assuming that he is playing against normal decks and therefore should know them. Not only is this incorrect (because 2 out of 3 of the decks are awkward/rogue decks) but it also exposes YOU as being the one who doesn't know about the format.
    - "This article is a MTGOTRADERS credit grab pure and simple." More trolling.
    - And, even in your explanation of/apology for your original post, you can't help yourself; so again you finish off by stating that this is an example of him: "not giving a dam as long as you get your credits to fund the next pauper deck." Which is again - trolling; and why you continue to make yourself look like a Jack@ss.

Hammer really man, to come back with that. Why don't you just go away. It's to late to make suggestions and be nice. Just leave.

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Sorry for the tone of my opening post. The point I wish to convey was that you need to take some additional time to Prepare and Polish and that you can make lots of small changes to dramatically improve the quality and content of your future video articles. You struggle to recall previous game states (so take some notes) your co-commentator has a poor audio feed (look to address this). The written text is unrefined (which is fine since the bulk of the content is in the video but please try and demonstrate a level of care and thought). Be more selective on the content you show or use highlights of take home messages (for example the whole basic land match-up was pretty pointless). Try and include more incite into the reason why you make the plays that you do, what is your overall strategy for a given match-up and what do you expect your opponent to be setting up / might have in his hand etc. I am not a stickler for correct spelling but I just felt that the image you convey with right and do is one of being sloppy and lazy; not giving a dam as long as you get your credits to fund the next pauper deck.

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

First of all, thanks for your critique. I am usually one to observe but don't comment on videos at all, only if something really extraordinary happens - which is now. As a subscriber to mikey's channel on youtube, I saw he uploaded a video where he tells everyone about the situation and the things that happened here on puremtgo. He goes on to explain that he lost pretty much all of his motivation because he does these videos for the viewers, and if the viewers do nothing but pi** him off, to use mikey's terms, then he really doesn't see a reason to create and upload more of these videos, which is really sad actually, because I like his very natural style of commentary, even though it is a bit ranty sometimes.

Apparently, the video is down or listed private right now, so I'm not sure what to think - but if he saw my comment and that made him think I am more than happy to have achieved my goal. If not - whatever, some things just have to be said sometimes.

As for the term "grammar nazi", I was referring to the style of the commentary. If someone says: "I really liked these videos because of (this and that) but it seems you spelled some words wrong." But if someone starts in an arrogant manner like the following: "First, you wrote that wrong. Second, you're terrbile and stupid. Oh, and when we're on it, you're also stupid because you spelled (this) wrong."

As for myself, I really enjoy video material, as it allows me to watch it and practice guitar at the same time (I'm a musician btw). Also, 'm not a native speaker, in fact, English is more like my 3rd or 4th language, so I apologize for using certain terms in a wrong way.

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Don't let what 2 or 3 people are saying bug you too much I am pretty sure the fans out weigh the haters by far. take a few weeks off regroup and come back and do some videos I co-host with you every week on PTTP and you are pretty much an expert on the pauper format. Your incite has helped me more than once make a really good deck in pauper. Keep up the good work yo! to those of you who may not agree with me unless you have constructive criticism just keep it to yourself because it's really disrespectful.

  • Freed from the Real 160: Angels! Dragons! Rawr!   13 years 17 weeks ago

I would really really like to see a karakas. I would also really like to see wasteland. but thats cause I dont own a paper version.

if it dosent have at least 1 of those two cards i would be sad. would also reallllllllllly like to see a maze of ith, or a port.

ideally there would be all 4 and last but not least city of brass or command tower.

    Little known factoid about magic.

the color of the deck master stamp on the back od the card, is very exepensive to print, compared to the rest of the cost of inking.

learnt at the CC, when we were shown the back of the over sized commander legends were missing the deck master stamp.

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Did he stop making videos? That wasn't my impression. I hope not at least. (By the way welcome to puremtgo!) The criticism given shouldn't have been put so negatively. Certainly using vinegar to make a point does nothing of the sort (rather the opposite.) But isn't it a good thing to be open to critique in order to improve one's art, writing, etc?

I am not saying "These guys" are 100% right but it seems like there is some positive take away from this that does not require people resorting to flaming. I understand the urge, being a bellicose and pugnacious person myself. The instinct to punish the wrong-doer is strong when we feel the sting of an insult. Never mind that they are entitled to their (perhaps poorly framed) opinion.

They shouldn't be so rude as to share it so vehemently and without apology. (Not counting the one by Slow_Roll.)

A thing or two about your post in general. People use terms like "Grammar Nazi" when they feel someone is being far too picky. (And imho if you were seeking to be offensive that was a good start at trolling the site as a whole. Because who likes to be called a horrific monster of unimaginable evil?)

But it is understandable I think on a site dedicated to written material about mtgo to be a little picky about the quality of written posts. I agree that it isn't important enough to turn it into a 'cause celeb'. But in the same instance I think it is a tradition at least on this site for contributors to pull each other up and help each other present better material.

Thanks for posting your 2 cents and I hope you continue to post now that you are here. I am not a big fan of video material myself but I respect the effort that goes into it and admire the dedication shown with this series. Mikey and others could use your support and input.

  • Diaries of the Apocalypse: Tribal Week 60   13 years 17 weeks ago

Yeah your results may definitely vary in JuFF. Mine have been typically positive. On the other hand getting paired against even Liches which as you say aren't necessarily top notch could be very trying for someone with a weak, underdeveloped or just fun theme deck.

  • Diaries of the Apocalypse: Tribal Week 60   13 years 17 weeks ago

What Paul said is all correct except Tribal Apocalypse has fun, non-cutthroat decks/players too (you can see the Elk decks and AJ's Lich deck in this very article). On the other hand, I quit seeking for tribal games in the Casual Room (now Just for Fun: a very deceptive name) a long time ago, since half the tribal games I got into were mainly against Elves or Goblins, and secondarily against cutthroat white aggro decks like Kithkin or Soldier. And that's definitely NOT fun for my taste (not to mention hyper-boring).

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Again don't listen to the show if it bugs you listen to something else! It's your problem if you keep listening and it annoys you.

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Long time reader here, but I had to log on to respond to some of the commentary up above.

First off, I would say that Mikey K is one of the more knowledgable pauper players out there. He has done videos (of which probably the Deck Tech and sideboarding are most informative) on almost every competitive deck in the format.

Secondly, you'll notice that what hammer describes above (i.e. that MikeyK was playing in the Tournament Practice room) is inaccruate - he is playing the deck in all of the two man queues. This was a change he made many videos ago based on comments he received, and it adds a bit of credibility to his "surprise" at some of the deck choices that were made for a paid event.

Finally, the "whininess" of Mikey K's videos are a part of his style. He verbalizes what many of us feel while playing MTGO. That is what makes his videos eerily addictive...he calls it as he sees it, is full of emotion, and in the end is down-right entertaining.

For those of you that are not used to his style, I think you should back up, take a deep breath, and take a nice stroll through his previous videos. You'll quickly see why (as described above) he is one of the most followed pauper players on youtube, and how his "style" differs from either the high level grandiose evaluations you might be used to and/or significantly indepth analytical videos that you may be seeking. In the end, his style might not be for you...but I personally enjoy the change of pace, and encourage MikeyK to keep up the good work (along with his partner, which can be downright amusing at times).

Another step that got missed was updating the link to my Overdriven! articles. This week's was #13, and #12 is linked... which explains why the view numbers for 12 are so high, and the view numbers for #13 are meh. :) I just noticed this, else I'da said something earlier.

I am gonna have to agreee wyth you, well sed!

    @under_the_hammer:
    Edit that please!

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Here is a little hint YOU DON'T HAVE TO WATCH HIS VIDEOS OR READ HIS ARTICLES IF YOU DON'T WANT TO! Don't ruin it for those of us that enjoy and even like some of Mikey's Ideas.

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

I signed up at puremtgo only for one reason; to show you the stupidity of your actions. I don't wanna be offensive (even though I probably will appear to be), but do you really think, that just because you're typing a message on a website and telling it directly to someone does make it nicer, cleaner, less annyoing/ disturbing, whatever? So, let's break thos down piece by piece:

    @under_the_hammer:

    1. Being a Grammar Nazi doesn't make you a better person. If you point it out nicely, ok, but stop being so unnecesseraily rude please.

    2. Also, I don't know what you did not understand about that Deck. I thought this Deck review was, as always, very informative. Posting the Decklist might be nice, but please, don't be so spoiled! CFB doesn't post decklists either and I don't think I ever saw someone complain there.

    3. SRSLY DUDE?!? No srsly, I also enjoy playing Pauper a lot, but I never, never saw a Storm Deck in any current MtG format that runs only basics, which are strictly inferior to saclands in a format where wasteland isn't legal. I mean, c'mon, you would'nt be confused if you ran into a deck like this? The Manabase seems as absurd to me as if a MBC would run a few Forests just for fun. I bet you wouldn't get this either.

    4. Yes, UR Mill. Yes, I haven't seen any Deck like that before neither, so I found this match very interesting. I actually prefer some diversity, which is one of the things I like most about this format. So if you wanna go back to 2011 and play Cawblade Mirrors forever, I'm sorry, but that's just stupid.

    5. I think what Mikey was trying to say was that this Matchup went in a different manner than usually, which seems like a legit explanation to me (e.g. the opponent's attack in the first game).

    6. It's true that this version of Delver Blue plays not too many win conditions, as many play more, including stuff like the whole Cloud of Faeries/ Spellstutter Spite package.

    7. It's undeniable that mikey's videos are the most viewed videos about pauper on youtube, so I think he deserves some respect. Go back and watch his old videos; even though those aren't always that good as the newer ones, I still watched every one of them. And it also becomes clear very quickly that he's doing it for the sake of it, and not just for some tickets or whatever. Oh, and btw, I learned quite a bit about Pauper from mikey, in fact he was the one who even brought me into the format. It appears that you seem to be more jealous than anything else.

@SLow Roll: Considering your apology, but still, those videos are really something individual, and if you don't accept mikey for what he is, which, according to the bible, you should, then maybe those videos aren't the right thing for you.

Finally, I found it really disturbing that mikey stopped amkeing videos just because of some trolls. Yes, you are trolls, especially you, under_the_hammer, because your comment really looks more like "You are stupid, you suck at this game, and why am I not getting any money and attention."
From wikipedia: "a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,(...) messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, (...) with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

P.S.: If you find any typos in my text, you can send me an email to my adress "screw.you@Idontcare.com".

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

To just come in and throw hate at Mikey, about little assy things like editing, and whining to much. Mikey is one of the most open and knowlaheable people putting out not only videos about the format, but also what is probably the only pauper only podxast out there to. Everyone has thier own idea of fun, and Mikey likes to complain. Its his style, if you dont like it go watch one of the other pauper format youtube guys, really. I mean if you can find any that put out the amount of product that Mikey does.Under the hammer, you are just a Troll, really, to blow someone up and not put anythingpositive at all jn whet you are saying, you may as well just started off by dropping a Hitler of MTGO comment and calling Mikey a gay slur. You should go find some other faceless community to be a part of.
Mikey just rise above brother, and keep being you, dont worry about trolls.
    Sam.

  • Freed from the Real 160: Angels! Dragons! Rawr!   13 years 17 weeks ago

definitely would like to see the shock duals, but I feel it would be a bit of a stretch as well to bring them all in as it would really kill the market for em

  • State of the Program for March 2nd   13 years 17 weeks ago

standard process for doing the card price section.

    1) copy the entire section from last week into this week's article draft
    2) copy the "this week" prices in each table to the "last week" column
    3) enter the new price for a card
    4) check whether it is in stock
    5) calculate the change in price (I do this in my head)
    6) change the +/- and text color if necessary
    7) repeat for every card in the table
    8) go back and rewrite the intro paragraph based on what happened this week.

Guess which step got missed this week?

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

a bible verse? wow so much Douche Chills

  • Mikey K Radio – Island's Are Everywhere!   13 years 17 weeks ago

I've watched many of your video articles and my impression has been that you are somewhat of an expert on the pauper format. This is the first article of yours that I've commented on, and I regret that I only commented because I was annoyed. Please accept my apologies for not also telling you all the times in the past that I watched your videos and thought that you did a good job. I just can't stand to watch all the complaining. It's not just you. PV, Tom Martell, and on and on... they all do it, but when you see it on video, you get the chance to see exactly how unflattering whining truly is.

Like I said before, you're better than that.

  • Freed from the Real 160: Angels! Dragons! Rawr!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Yeah I counted the shocklands as 10+the other 4 I mentioned.

  • Freed from the Real 160: Angels! Dragons! Rawr!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Rav Shocks would be perfect for the set, but I don't really think they could put in one without putting in all of them.

They could also be going with lands that have mention of MTG story in them, so places like Rishidan Port, Eye of Ugin, Academy Ruins, both Blinkmoth/Inkmoth Nexus, Urborg Tomb of Yawgmoth, etc.

  • Freed from the Real 160: Angels! Dragons! Rawr!   13 years 17 weeks ago

Seems easy to pick out 13-14 lands that might be in realms. None of these picks really excite me much as they are the second choices if the Reserved list is held to. Namely: Rishadan Port, Wasteland (as mentioned above), Rav Shock lands, Academy Ruins, (and maybe?) Inkmoth Nexus, which is 14 lands +1 new unnamed one. Other potential lands could be the M12 duals, the ISD duals and the SOM duals. I doubt ANY of those would see reprinting as they are still quite new and already technically still in print. Same goes for the WWK manlands as cool as they are. Of course like most people who don't care what is reprinted in paper I'd prefer the following: the Beta Duals, + Library of Alexandria, Volrath's Stronghold, Tolarian Academy and Gaea's Cradle (+ the one new one.)
