If you have Imp in hand you can get an Imp from the yard into your hand. If you have Unearth in hand, you can get an Imp from the yard into play and another one in hand, and for 2 less mana.

The problem here is that no card exists in a vacuum. Unearth is only good alongside other cards, just like Armadillo Cloak, Dark Ritual, Basking Rootwalla, the Imp in question, and thousands of others. BY ITSELF, Imp can attack for 1. BY ITSELF, Unearth can cycle. But neither card is played by itself. There are wonderful (and different) uses for all three cards:

When do you want Warren Pilferers?
*When you want to get back anything bigger than 3, like Mulldrifter
*When you can afford to wait a turn to replay it
    *When you want a 3/3

    When do you want Imp?
*When you want to get back anything bigger than 3, like Mulldrifter
*When you can afford to wait a turn to replay it and still keep 1~2 mana up for counter/bolt
*When you don’t need the 3/3 body of Warren Pilferers

    When do you want Unearth?
*When you want to get back something cmc 3 or less
*When you want the creature in play right now
*Nantuko Husk/Vampire Aristocrat decks (Mogg War Marshall + Unearth = +12/+12)
*When you want to Rat them again and still keep 2~3 mana up for counter/bolt/kill
    *CRYPT RATS - YIKES

Just one thing , what happen if jund use the new eldrazi card ? Just think about it . Is normal that if you made a deck with the new card the "old" deck have hard life . Just think about what happen if you cast Kozilek reanimating a baneslayer and ( i BET this card will enter on jund list ) play a Consuming Vapors . Yeah made Rise deck but do not play vs old deck to test it . Anyway probably the most "playable" list i've see actually :) .

I've already made slivers but I did make a few other decks as well...

  • Tribal Apocalypse: Forging the Perfect Weapon   15 years 10 weeks ago

the challenge is more of a volunteer thing so if anyone wants to do it then go for it. And Im not too familiar with slivers in pauper but if it is as bad as you say then Ill have a decision by this weekend...so dont make slivers till this weekend anyone

I think you got it! I think that is who I was thinking of... black armor, white hair, unnecessary shoulder-pads, constantly surrounded by flames for no good reason...

Justice guy also kind of looks like Sephiroth

Heh. I'll be sure to keep that in mind when I get to the three off-line unicorns (two of which are vanilla).

You should play your unicorn tribal deck against a Bella Sara deck and make some 8 year old girl cry when you tap 4 mana and have to tell her God is angry and has destroyed all of her horses.

Fun article. Puts a better spin on Eldrazi than I have seen so far. I have not been a fan yet. All IS Dust is of course a no brainer. I had no clue Dream Hedron was at all interesting though. (To be fair I haven't consistently kept up with the spoilers.) Ggs.

Edited to fix an incredible typo.

  • Tribal Apocalypse: Forging the Perfect Weapon   15 years 10 weeks ago

Overall it was a pretty interesting week. My Ooze deck did about what I expected it to do. It was not overally powered, but it had some decent match-ups. However I don't think I had a chance against the Living End deck.

Any thoughts on banning slivers for the pauper tribal event? Last I heard, they had a pretty powerful regular pauper deck.

Also, who gets the challenge this week?

  • Tap into raw power with Rise of the Eldrazi   15 years 10 weeks ago

"destroys everything except the Everflowing Chalice you've used to be able to cast it"
Eh, lands don't have a colour. It's basically Planar Cleansing with no chance of regen.

  • Pauper Times #7 - Urza's Saga Analysis   15 years 10 weeks ago

Except you cannot chain Imp into Unearth into Imp. Yes, getting an Imp back with Unearth is great, but that's a one time deal.
I love Unearth, do not get me wrong, but I do not think it will have a huge, format altering, impact.

If that rumored Gravedigger for 3 is real, then it’s an argument FOR Unearth, as it forms that “chain” you’re talking about. What makes Unearth really shine, as was pointed out in the original article, is the cost. There are situations and decks where you don’t want to spend your turn paying 5 to Raise Dead, even when it comes with a 3/3. Control decks can Unearth a Rav Rats and keep their counter mana up, for example.

"Does he sacrifice the baby to ensure his own safe passage, by tossing the tyke to the hungry demons"
I had a character do that very thing in a D&D game last year. Very sad, but it was him or me...

  • Pauper Times #7 - Urza's Saga Analysis   15 years 10 weeks ago

Whew, the puzzle got me to think quite a bit, I wouldn't call it that much on the 'easy side' :) I'm highly doubtful of any solution that doesnt use all mana available though... Thanks for those puzzles!

  • Pauper Times #7 - Urza's Saga Analysis   15 years 10 weeks ago

I think you are overrating Unearth. It is a fantastic card, for certain, but one of the great things about Gravedigger/Warren Pilferers is that you can chain them together to provide an unending stream of blockers. You have no such option with Unearth. This is huge.
There is a rumored common from Rise of the Eldrazi: an Imp for 1BB that flies and has the Gravedigger ability, but is only a 1/1. I would sooner run this over Unearth for chaining purposes (or perhaps run them together for double the fun). That being said, the thing that makes Pilferers so good is the 3/3 body AND the Raise Dead.
    Food for thought,
    -Alex

I for one would rather have a vanilla flavored unicorn than a repentant blacksmith. Unicorns are needed to fill out my tribal decks.

  • Pauper Times #7 - Urza's Saga Analysis   15 years 10 weeks ago

    Yes, Unearth will be format-breaking.

Tolarian Winds didn’t make your list. Surely such a powerful effect can find a home somewhere, like in a Dredge Deck with Haunting Misery, or Reanimator? Sadly, I depend on better deck builders to break cards.

    On the Reanimator deck:
I don’t think you necessarily need to base the deck around hardcasting Eldrazi with Exhume as Plan B if you luck into it. It’s possible to build a more traditional Reanimator deck where reanimation is Plan A

Though it’s not ideal since Exhume is “only” a 4-of and you won’t find it in your opening 7 every game, I think a good Exhume deck will need to include some turn-1 discard effects to enable a turn-2 Exhume. There are many options in blue/black: Hapless Researcher can chump and also draws a card, Funeral Charm or Piracy Charm can be used for either of their other two abilities, or Raven’s Crime can be retraced later in the game (since lands won’t matter than much to the deck). If you’re on the play and they don’t have Terminate or two-mana bounce, they lose.

    Exhume 5-8 = False Defeat.

Other than the 8/8 Eldrazi, Twisted Abomination makes a great Exhume target because it puts itself into the yard without using another card and regenerates to stay alive.

They’ll side in Relic of Progenitus, so you bring in the transformational sideboard. Seriously, I think Reanimator as a strategy might be too easy to hate out, but with Exhume and the first reanimation-worthy Pauper creature being released around the same time makes it too intriguing to ignore.

If you really want to hose black with this, run Urborg, tomb of Yawgmoth. Nonbasic schmonbasic.

  • Tribal Apocalypse: Forging the Perfect Weapon   15 years 10 weeks ago

Over a very interesting week. I didn't get to watch Ooze as my matches were overly long compared to his but that was definitely the most interesting of the deck's AJ's Incarnations was also quite interesting (especially considering he built it as a challenge from Flippers.) While I won both games I know that deck has potential to just shut your opponent down. Glory was scary every time it showed and only huge amounts of constant pressure on my side of the board kept it from being a factor. I didn't get to see the Living Beasts deck in action much either but it looked pretty nasty the one glimpse I caught of it.

Kalandine's Illusions looked very nice too. He has been working on that deck for a bit now and it has evolved into a fairly solid control deck. Unfortunately his match ups have not been ideal.

  • Tribal Apocalypse: Forging the Perfect Weapon   15 years 10 weeks ago

Our match round 3 was very disappointing but game 1 it was all about the Sword of Fire and Ice. With that on the table my largely blue force was unable to sustain a presence for long. Game 2 was about not drawing a black mana in the umpteen rounds we went (I had 2 Cairn Wanderers, 2 Enigma Sphinx, 1 Magister Sphinx and something else for most of the game.) But having played your deck before the event I knew it was going to be rough going in. Kor + equipment = fast clock. Nice deck and ggs.
