Oh dear, as a new writer I now find myself both inspired and very self-conscience. Am I providing enough insight, enough content? Do I sound educated or like I have no idea what I'm talking about? Do I ramble too much!? Do people not like my articles because I'm albino!?!? IS ALBINOPHOBIA EVEN A THING!!!!????

    *pops anti-anxiety pill*

Ah, that's better. At the very least you used card tags and the deck generator that I only recently stumbled upon. Your last comment tells me your taking the criticism for what it is and turning it to your benefit, and good job on that. Ironically I've just submitted my article for next week about Extended Teachings, gotta love that card, eh?

  • Making it in Pauper with UB Teachings   15 years 4 days ago

thanks for all the comments guys.

after seeing the article posted i now realise i could have gone further... tried to give some hints on some important matchups but yeah, the deck deserves more :)

i'll see if i get some time to write a good follow up article, and maybe some draft reports since that's what i mostly do right now.

So, I have my pool (Mirage, Visions, Planar Chaos, Time Spiral, Worldwake) and if anyone wants to do a practice game, feel free to IM me online.

  • The Coalition League   15 years 4 days ago

I had a look at your pool and you have some nice cards in there to choose from.

Awesome article hopefully I will be able to join one of these events. If I do this would be a great resource. Keep em coming.

  • The Coalition League   15 years 4 days ago

Well I have taken a risk with champions block stuff, I just love the setting :)

  • $T1KS: Next Level Bant in Standard   15 years 4 days ago

Ahh, stax. I miss vintage tournaments so much! Here, let me write a detailed tournament report about my finals round against stax playing for a Mox Jet:

    Game 1: I play first.
Turn 1: Bayou, Land Grant, Black Lotus, Goblin Charbelcher, LED, deal 52 damage

    Game 2: I draw
Turn 1: Mishra's Workshop, Black Lotus, Trinisphere
Turn 2: Tropical Island, ESG, ESG, Channel, Goblin Charbelcher, deal 31 damage

And people say Vintage is a broken format XD

Great article, I both love and despise NLB, because I desparately want to play it, but I can't afford it >.<

While deluxeicoff didn't use the right "nice" terms, I think his comment has merit. This has nothing to do with this particular article, but lately the content here has been very meh. I have even found myself falling into this trap and found myself disappointed with some of my articles after they were published. Often times finding information I could of included, not to mention the number of readers of my content has declined. This leads me to believe the content I've been putting out is either weak or my reader base isn't as strong as I'd like. Either that or I am just not as good of a writer as I had thought. Either way, we all need to step up our game when it comes to writing articles.

The great thing about this site is it allows everyone the freedom of starting from somewhere. Unfortunately, we need more articles with more substance.

Props to you Deluxeicoff for saying something I've been thinking for the past several weeks, but next time use a tad more tact. :)

One of the reasons I like this site is because of the feedback. Articles are usually enhanced by other players chiming in and adding a different set of opinions, counterpoints, or insights. Other magic websites have comment sections but they seem a lot less significant there. On Pure the discussions are more in depth and push many of the articles beyond simply one person's opinion. This is somewhat due to the big iconic pictures that get associated with your comments here and also because there are a lot of posters who take the time to check back on articles and reply to comments frequently.

This site is also an open forum, where anyone can write articles on just about any magic related topic. It comes with the territory that some of those articles are going to be lacking in quality or content. However, that is a small price to pay for the community discussions that this FREE site creates.

    deluxeicoff,
It seems to me that you are expressing frustration that some other writers don't spend as much time and energy on their articles as you do. That sometimes is the case, and I can understand how that can be frustrating. However there are also some writers that spend MORE time on their articles than you do as well. I have recently taken a break from writing articles because I haven't had the time to create high quality content and spend quality time with my family and try to qualify for MOCS. When I've written an article, the credits are hardly worth the time and energy it takes to write it. I write my articles for more than the trade credits. However, I don't look down on writers who may not want to spend the same amount of time 10+ hours on an article and receive less than mimimum wage in most countries as compensation. The compensation is nice, but it's not why I written for this site, and I assume it's not why most players write for this site.

However, with this site we have a lot of different players with different skill levels and writing ability contributing to the effort. Some articles might look like a rushed work that was made only to get a few credits, but that doesn't mean those articles are not useful to the community. Just look at the discussion that has come about because of this article.

I wasn't around for leagues back in the day but I do enjoy playing sealed and draft, so this is perfect. Thanks for the group invite which let me know I was a welcome participant.

In regards to tables you can copy directly from Excel 2007 just make sure to add some borders first, not sure if thats what you are after though.

  • Making it in Pauper with UB Teachings   15 years 4 days ago

One other thought for the non pauper players who read this it would be nice to see deck lists of the decks you are talking about in the article rather than having to go to another site to see them that would also help break the article up.

  • Making it in Pauper with UB Teachings   15 years 4 days ago

Give the guy a break it’s his first article. I know when I did mine its quite a scary task, putting yourself on the line like this is a big jump in a lot of peoples life.

If you don’t like the article then you need to give constructive criticism to help make his next article better, you yourself are a pauper writer so are in the best position to do this with regards to the content.

If every new writer faced this and a lot of them do you may never see what they can be capable of with a bit of encouragement and advice.

I don’t normally read pauper articles as it’s not my format of choice. I only looked at the article as I saw Paul’s comment.

Now that I’ve read it I would suggest to riclas to go a bit further in to why each of the cards are present in the deck and sideboard and add a few card images to help break the article up. I’d be interested to know why there is a lot of one off cards in the deck as to me that’s not normal I know the deck has teachings but is constant enough to be able to give you the cards you need when you need them.

The break down vs the different archetypes is good but needs to be split up a bit more and it would be nice to see some examples of games you have played against these types of decks so we can see your deck of choice in action.

like most things in life, if you dont like it you can always leave?

  • Making it in Pauper with UB Teachings   15 years 4 days ago

Correction, I have issue with your behavior here. I don't know you to have issue with you. If you don't like something, I think you should speak out but there are ways of doing it that don't reflect badly on you. I am all for being honest but there is a difference between that and being brutal just because you can. If this article was too short why not give him some leading questions to answer? Give him your expert advice as a writer, not simply tear him down as a disgruntled unsatisfied reader.

By the way, how much are you paying to read these articles that you feel are a rip off? I too think some of them could be improved/longer/better formatted/edited more carefully. But I am grateful for the content. If an article comes along that doesn't suit then it doesn't suit there will be some that do.

"and it's a pitty he's the target of many bad articles. Boo hoo."
this part didn't make sense by the way.

  • $T1KS: Next Level Bant in Standard   15 years 4 days ago

    1) Thanks, will use that for future articles.
    2) Yea, but that wouldn't be as memorable as stax. :) I didn't name the deck.

  • Making it in Pauper with UB Teachings   15 years 4 days ago

As always, you have issue with me :) I feel this needs to be said simply: There is too much garbage on this site. People rushing to get free credits and not thinking articles through. I did say, "Not to sound mean..." and it's a pitty he's the target of many bad articles. Boo hoo.

  • Making it in Pauper with UB Teachings   15 years 4 days ago

Your sense of tact is severely lacking. You could have said the same thing without being so rude. Your own articles have not been the best this site has seen, imho, though certainly not the worst. Everyone has to start some where. How about leaving out the insults next time and give the guy some pointers.

  • Pauper Premier Event Analysis: June 12, 2010   15 years 4 days ago

Loved the idea/theme of this one, and I feel your pain on the time/turnaround with time sensitive articles...I wish PUREMTGO would give a tighter turnaround for authors who've proved their worth. I'm really bent lately on this site, articles are getting very rushed and have a 'spit-out' feeling to them. This obviously isn't one of them :)
If my past articles have any steady logic behind a metagame, I'd expect to see everything red tomorrow, as readers will overanalyze the affinity coverage mentioned here and bring in all their gorilla-smashing friends. We'll see. You just gotta love this format, so varied and deep now. I still have no idea what I'm playing tomorrow! Which is crazy as I usually focus on one deck for a month or longer. Be a great change up for a protour if they had this as a "Saturday" event in the pros, be neat to see what the great minds would think up.

  • Making it in Pauper with UB Teachings   15 years 4 days ago

This article seemed rushed and with a deck as deep as teachings, I expected more. Take away the decklist and it's barely two paragraphs. Sorry to sound mean, just that Puremtgo seems to publish anything lately, favoring quanity over quality.

@ Guinhenhas, a 5 rating? Seriously? Wow...those are some low expectations you have of writers. Instead of suggesting yet another hurried and shoved out there post like - (...maybe worth a follow up..?) - why not call him on it - it is simply unfinished and not ready to publish.
