Getting support for the PRE might be tough. MTGOtraders has already turned down an invitation only PRE so if you want it sponsored here you probably need to leave it open to whomever.
Great Article. I learned this format can be quite competative. My deck sucked.
Suggestions for the tournament. Try and stick with a dedicated time and day. Going back and forht like that from Saturday to Sunday can confuse a noob if they didn't catch you switch back and forth. Also you might want to post your event on the Mothership PRE forums and here as well. Time, Date etc.
I think us Puremtgo guys should try to coordinate a game amongst ourselves.
If we get enough interest maybe we can do a PRE.
We could even use a merit system such as the one Sheldon uses for his EDH group.
The blue mage. Powerful yet weak. In Commander/EDH the blue mage can be quite powerful. If players are not up on this then the blue mage can steal the game quickly.
Was playing EDH last night and Blue Red Mage Bribery(ed) me on turn fuve for my Darksteel Collossus. Attacked me for 11 on turn 6, then on turn 7 played Insurrection and finished me off for the rest. I was too busy focussing on the black m age with the 1/1 creature combo to notice the Blue mage making a threat.
The cool thing about EDH/Commander card buying, once you have it, you wont need to get it again. You will start to find the good cards that are expensive will be used in other decks with the same color requirements, meaning there is no need to buy them again. Spend 30$ on Primeval Titan? Not anymore.
Great article. I'd even call it (and the previous) "must reads" for anyone wanting to get into Commander.
I would add a subpoint 8 though: Chat. Most of the time even if a game isn't going well, I'll still have a lot of fun just BS'ing with the other players.
Usually I'm a mix of the Good Stuff and Themed types. I'll make a theme, but then I'll fill it out with good stuff. And if you buy smart, Commander can be pretty cheap to get into. I set a budget of usually $20 for a new deck. That puts together a deck that is fun to play. If I like it I'll Constantly Build and add cards a couple at a time so I don't break the bank all at once.
My guesses for your favorite are:
Asceticism (could be great protection for creatures)
Clone Shell (is that an Eldrazi under there?)
Prototype Portal (What's better than one creature with Umezawa's Jitte? All your creatures with an Umezawa' Jitte!)
Not an infinit combo person myself. There are so many and they are easy to assemble. Unless its really wacky like the 6 card sliver combo I use once in a while. But in gerneal infinit combos to me are a cop out. I believe my skill has evolved far enough that I don't need to win with an infinit combo.
The first deck is wacky. I'd applaud my opponent if they managed to pull that off. (They won't. I'll kill them first.)
The second deck isn't just missing FoW, it's also missing Reset. You can't play High Tide without Reset. But with a few Forces and Resets, that would be taking a Legacy-viable deck into the casual room. That's mean.
That anybody joined to just to fire it off. Been firing on it's own recently but this week was Scars Pre-release in Paper and MOCs champs. To be honest, I didn't think it would fire at all, but 4 weeks in a row now.
Thanks man, when in doubt copy yourself and hope that more of you will be enough to conquer what was before too daunting. (actually I don't endorse that thinking but I like the visual)
Well maybe you'll find some spare time or have a note of inspiration before long and give it another try. It was great having you give it an effort in any case and I wish you well.
It's funny what qualifies as being "cheap" in mtg/mtgo terms these days, if you don't want to spend thousands on the game every year i guess that makes you "cheap" lol.
There are certianly plenty giving Heirloom a good go these days and I'm sure before long we'll have some disgustingly deep market saturation =P
COngrats on the baby! Seems like they are coming like gangbusters on this site, lol.
I would have loved to champion a new format but I found myself abhoring the brokeness of this one. I built some heirloom decks as you know but they just could not live up to the rest others were bringing. What is most frustrating is that a lot of the cards I would like to play with are just on the borderline of unplayable (because of the arbitrary cut offs.) All that said I wish you guys good luck.
Enjoying the articles. Started MTGO in August after picking up paper a couple times dating back to revised. Never was interested in EDH, but perhaps these primers will help me! Anyway, my guesses for your top 3 Scars cards are:
In the casual room yesterday, I came across a player openly complaining (a little sarcastically I believe)because folks kept conceding when he comboed out Emrakul on turn 3 or somesuch. I asked why and he replied "But I want to see them lose all their permanents and suffer" I responded "You do see why one might not want to suffer for your amusement, Right?"
I love the first deck because it's wacky. The second is kinda meh, the 'broken' mechanic from Urza's on palinchron is just too easy to abuse.
I might be restricting myself too much, but these cards seem like they just might fit into the Kaervek deck.
1. Culling Dais - not as bomby as Greater Good, but reusable sac outlets are generally good.
2. Furnace Celebration - more goodies for when you sacrifice things.
3. Mimic Vat - it's been said already but you can upgrade to whatever the best creature is that's hit the bin and the one turn restriction isn't so bad when you're saccing to draw cards.
Thanks for the Commander primer. I only really play online and have been looking into getting into something other than draft all the time (which I enjoy but can be expensive and a big time sink) and this seems fun.
I had roughsod mentor in my Stonebrow deck for awhile, but I found hime a bit redundant since 90% of my critters had trample anyways. Gruul War Plow fulfilled that function for me.
I would really like to see you split up the "Storm archetype" here into traditional UBR Sacland Storm and new UG Twiddle Storm. The two decks have very little card overlap and are both played and hated significantly differently.
Well, I ment one tournament on Saturday (Heirloom) and one on Sunday (BYOS). Both tournaments need good decks and sometimes one week isn't enough to prepare a deck for both tournaments.
I don't really think Scars looks like a particularly fun set for constructed, but maybe I just haven't got into it yet. Anyway, the three cards that strike me as having high potential fun values are;
It's a great format. At the moment it seems like there are a million viable decks. I'm sure more people will switch over eventually, I mean I'm sure we aren't the only cheap mtgo players ;).
Ya I noticed that message from youtube about certian areas not being able to watch said videos. Pretty silly. I don't know why these music companies don't just hotlink their material to somewhere you can buy the songs when a person watches, free advertizing right?. Anyhow I'm keeping this in mind for all future material, hopefully I can find some media that isn't so silly about this stuff.
There is certianly plenty of room for more Heirloom Godfathers. I know there are lots of people out there with a great deal to offer the Heirloom community. In general people that have been playing Heirloom are really the best sort, and I know it's the sort of group I was always looking for on MTGO when it just seemed like a cold and unwelcoming place only designed to collect tix for drafts and constructed events.
Thanks for the comment Nagarjuna. It's Always great to hear from you.
AJ pulled one on me yesterday that I didn't see coming. :( ouch.
Getting support for the PRE might be tough. MTGOtraders has already turned down an invitation only PRE so if you want it sponsored here you probably need to leave it open to whomever.
I stick by Necrotic Ooze.
Adding to that because you are red mage who enjoys odd combos, Molten Psyche.
And finally, Myr Galvanizer for your Myr tribal.
Great Article. I learned this format can be quite competative. My deck sucked.

Making New Guesses
Genesis Wave
Necrotic ooze
Geth

Either way, interesting first deck.
The premier event on september 24, not the TDPC on september 28.
I'm surprised Goyf dropped that much.

There were two Goblins (the number of each type of deck is listed to the left of the archetype name).

for the pauper premier event on september 24, the top 4 in your grid only has 3, what was the 4th?

so I'll guess those.
