Dude, he ran both. My argument was Serenity is much more dangerous when facing a typical shop draw. Great, you can pitch flux to Fow or MANA DRAIN (really, you can cast mana drain against shop t2 with no issues?)a shop spell and follow up with Flux....

Honestly, getting a 2 mana spell that destroys all spheres and chalices AND IS CHEAPER seems like a win-win to me... The name of the game against shops is being able to play things....

Another quality podcast guys. One quibble, not sure if you noticed this after recording, but often throughout the podcast there was this sound as if someone was playing with poker chips and shuffling them around. Perhaps it was feedback from someone's mic, but it did distract from my listening.

  • Yawgmoth's Soap Opera Episode 40: A Cockroach Before The Masques   13 years 35 weeks ago

Energy Flux is better than Serenity because Blue>White. With Energy Flux it's easy to fit it into a shell with something like mana drain to help cast it.

  • Goblin Deck Wins   13 years 35 weeks ago

Sylvok lifestaff seems like a good idea. The problem is martyr of ashes... That card is a pain.

  • Yawgmoth's Soap Opera Episode 40: A Cockroach Before The Masques   13 years 35 weeks ago

I like the idea of putting in Confidant into that thresh list, but losing green would mean that you lose your claims out of the board, which softens you even more to Oath. Tarm also provides a better clock, which a deck like this needs as it can only stall losing for so long before other classic decks' better cards crush you. Tarm is also a hate bear for fish decks (although you will likely win against them anyway). I would fear that without Tarms of my own and no white for StP/PtE getting rid of an opposing tarm might become problematic as bolt will fail to do it 90% of the time.

Although with picking up black I would probably add Duress/Thoughseize so it might work out in the end.

Also, that list is far from well vetted. If I had to do it again I think I would probably switch in Trygons for Cliques, as although the Cliques are nice I think Trygon would be stronger vs Oath and Shops. Ligntning Bolt was also much stronger than I expected it to be. From killing Bobs/Lodestones to going for the dome in conjunction with SCM it was very strong. There might be a place for 1 or 2 more burn spells in there (The legacy version runs Fire/Ice, but that seems weak in classic...will have to test). I might cut a stifle and try something like that out.

Between Brainstorm and just having a lot of instants Delver was flipping the next upkeep about 75% of the time. He is seriously powerful in any kind of aggro/control shell--hes basically Nimble Mongoose on crack. Had I realized how strong he was going to be I might have decided against needing Tarm in the list.

Did you find any Alien vs Predator CCG cards?

  • Memory Lane   13 years 35 weeks ago

That's really cool. I wish, wish, wish, i still had all my stuff from back then. Probably better that I can't remember exactly what paper cards I sold in the late 90's for pennies on the dollar...

  • Goblin Deck Wins   13 years 35 weeks ago

I've only had a chance to check out the first match so far but I just wanted to chip in on the Burn matchup. The only card I've seen Goblins play that really helps there is maybe 1 or 2 Sylvok Lifestaff in the sideboard. Anyways, that's all I've got for now keep up the good work on the videos.

  • Innistrad Draft Archetypes: B/R Zendikar Beatdown   13 years 35 weeks ago

Yeah, it was probably wrong to use that deck as an example. But I actually haven't drafted much B/R aggro online, and that was the only deck of the archetype I had available, saved and ready. I've had much more practice with the archetype at FNMs and such, but no record of them.

  • Innistrad Draft Archetypes: B/R Zendikar Beatdown   13 years 35 weeks ago

No offense, but that deck is somewhat unrealistic. Not just because you got the absolute best BR card, Olivia Voldaren, but because your deck is basically half uncommons (Diregraf Ghoul, 2 Waif, 3 Rakish Heir, Abbatoir Ghoul, Galvanic juggernaut, Falkenrath Noble, Rage Thrower.) Well over half of your creature are Uncommon/Rare/Mythic.

I'm not posting this to say BR aggro isn't a deck, or you drafted poorly (your deck looks very good, clearly BR aggro was open) but fundamentally you draft around commons - except that deck has very few good BR common creatures (Markov Patrician, Vampire Interloper, Ghoulraiser, Pitchburn Devils, and to a lesser extent Village Ironsmith/Tormented Pariah.)

  • View At Your Own Risk: Innistrad Draft 1   13 years 35 weeks ago

Bloodcrazed Neonate is one of the worst cards, in that it is always terrible for you and great against you. My opponents always have it when I am on the draw with a slow hand, and when I have been forced to play it I draw it on turn 8.

In many ways it is like champion of the parish. I just lost a draft where 3/3 games my opponent led off with champion turn 1. It isn't like white has a ton of 1 drops where champion is bad or unplayable, and when you curve out with humans it is quite good, but he always had the absurd champion into human, human, human hand that beats you, even though champion as late as turn 3 or 4 is bad.

I've started drafting blue more and more (I've done a lot of drafts, over 30) because GW levelers is insanely overdrafted and silent departure/grasp of phantoms owns that deck.

I definitely agree with you on Harvest Pyre and Corpse Lunge, I generally only want 1 of those in my decks unless I have a self-mill theme. Olivia Voldaren is also nearly unstoppable, nothing deals with her except Smite the Monstrous (after she has used her ability) or Prey Upon, or something like Slayer of the Wicked. Worst card of the set from a limited perspective by far, every time I've had to play against it I lost.

I feel like I need an intervention. Thank you guys for letting me know just how much the mouse thing annoys you.

I will find a way to fix it... no idea why it is so ingrained in my play now :(

I'm gonna post the videos from this past weekend, but next week look out for super-focused Zach trying to avoid the nervous tick!

  • Freed From The Real #143: Gravy Train Derailment!   13 years 35 weeks ago

The thing that happened for me is that I found ways to automate our production. I work for a Food Bank, which is a statewide centralized donation system that functions as a food distribution center for agencies that feed people in need. I found out how to make other processes go smoother in our warehouse, and it literally did make my job somewhat obsolete.

So now they want me to do that for our whole network. They are paying for me to be a certified "Six Sigma Black Belt", which is an arbitrary way of saying "process improvement specialist". Well, the certification is about 9 credits from being a full blown Business Systems analyst. That is when the big bucks will start rolling in...

The problem is the underwriter for our company jumped ship, and now this new person is having to build a case for why we would need such a thing. I am not to worried but it is annoying going to work and having an uncertain future with the company. It kind of feels like living with an ex or someone that you are done with (like an annoying college room mate who only listens to the Grateful Dead/Phish/String Cheese Incident/*insert hippy jam band here*).

  • Fun with Vanguard #55: Three new things   13 years 35 weeks ago

It seems a lot more fun than Momir basic....
    Certainly more strategy-based, anyway.

  • Freed From The Real #143: Gravy Train Derailment!   13 years 35 weeks ago

Funny, I went through the same thing at my own job. But, it didn't work out so well for me, and I ended up getting laid off :( So, I went back to school to finish my degree. In any case, the point is well taken.

  • Fun with Vanguard #55: Three new things   13 years 35 weeks ago

Yeah transform is not flipping in the sense we think of it. The mechanic of the paper version of the cards is misleading because they made the transformed version on the other side of the card but in actuality both versions exist on the same (face up) side.

RE: Dakkon Avatar, someone was talking about that recently as a solution to mana screw games. Just play vanguard format agreeing to both use Dakkon as the avatar and you have a format where it is impossible to get a bad land draw.

  • Freed From The Real #143: Gravy Train Derailment!   13 years 35 weeks ago

Yeah, I had a similar situation occur about a year ago at work. Being in a public school during the state budget crisis led to me without a contract for about a month. Luckily, my job is female-dominated, so it was only a matter of time before someone turned out to be pregnant and not coming back next year, so I found a spot.

Whenever you are ready to get beat down by my Goyfs again, let me know :P

    Thanks for listening!!

  • Semi Pro - ISD Block DE #1 - BUG Report   13 years 35 weeks ago

Haha. I have gotten so far in drafts 12 Garruks and about 15 Snappy's, but I haven't gotten a Lilliana since the Pre-release and don't feel like paying the $80 for a playset since I like the idea of the Heartless Summoning deck.
    ==========================================================================

Once again Kudos on the 4-0. Expect your deck list to be copied about...um...yesterday and get play. I even think I ran into a version of it today. I guess I'm not the complete D-bag everyone thinks I am. Or maybe I just haven't slept in 2 days because I was on line at Best Buy last night at midnight to buy my pre-ordered copy of COD:MW3 (Which is amazing btw), so maybe I'm just over-exhausted because this is the first time I have stopped playing it.
**Shhh I'm up to level 42 already**
But to be honest I just appreciate people playing new stuff, playing it right, and showing that new formats have a ton of diversity and on "Any Given Sunday" anyone can walk into a large tournament with a new deck and play it to perfection. And hey, you didn't need even 1 Force of Will, haha.

You know, look over the decks going 4-0 and 3-1 in STD daily's. I don't think there has ever been this much diversity in the winning decks. Sure some look the same, but no two are completely alike. I mean there are Infect decks, W/G ramp, R/G Ramp, W/B/U (Solar Flare, such a retarded name), an illusion deck, a snapcaster mage deck, an invisible stalker deck + Butchers Cleaver went 3-1.

To be honest I think Innistrad is one of the best things to happen to Magic since I stopped playing against Tolarian Academy in Type II.

And even in Block, there are so many different decks out there. Of literally every color combination. Including the Burning Vengeance deck that is U/B/G/R/W.

I am loving this. I mean there is no consensus #1 deck, and to make things even better??

    Just think of this:

What would the price of Snappy the Casting Mage be is he was a Mythic?
50? 60? They were smart enough to make it a rare so there's a fairly good chance you get a playset easily after a few drafts (by a few, I mean a minimum of 10ish).

I am so happy that there are only really 3 cards in the set around or above the $15 mark. That means that ISD Block constructed is open for everyone, and STD has so many new options that it's insane.

*I do a ton of drafting and I have been on an 8-4 massive winning streak (9 in a row) where I haven't lost in a while. I have either won or split. I have them all on my Youtube site but I think any link would be banned and all memory of me would be wiped from the face of the earth. Nothing made me cringe more than that draft posted yesterday where the guy passed like a potential playset of Travel Preps and I think I died a bit inside.

  • Rick's Picks: Sometimes the Meek Get There   13 years 35 weeks ago

I agree that there were some sketchy picks, but I think sticking to your guns is more important more often.

That said, you are machine anyway. While your picks may have been questionable, your play was damn near perfect.
