Agreed. I perceived the comment to mean: "I think his deck has a favorable match-up with mine, yet the results have not played out that way. I think the match results are aberrations."
I really liked this deck and I will try it as soon as possible. Last month I decided that a private cloud provider would be very beneficial for my online "life". This month I have to finish all the tests and hopefully next month I will be able to try this deck. You wrote that this are your first videos and I want to congratulate your for them because they are very nice.
I like the idea and the implementation, of course there will be someone who won't like yours approach but with this IT consumerization you can't please everyone. I respect your decision and I hope other users will too. I try to reach my monthly and yearly goals and after that I will be more interested in your offer.
The only reason why I play the same archetype over and over these days is something very simple: I always decide to play in the PRE at the very last minute and don't have time to build/test anything. Both the fishblade and the cawblade decks were a result of me don't having time to build something original.
This week I will sadly miss the tournament and I don't know what will happen next week. It seems that I will stay outside of top 16 at the end.
Anyway, I'll at least come and watch you guys slaughter each other!
any chance your in the st louis area goat? 314 is STL. if so do you play at local shops? draft etc? i'm native to the lou which is why i'm asking. oh yea, thanks for the article :)
I assumed nothing was meant by any of this, but I understand where Andy is coming from. I suppose it's what makes the written word so difficult to master.
The sentences "I have never lost to Goat in a tournament" and "I have never played goat in a tournament" can mean the same thing but would likely be interpreted differently.
Interesting breakdown of the match you two had anyway.
I did not mean that to come across that I somehow had superior skill or an advantage when we play. I simply meant it as a fact that the only two times our decks have paired, I've managed a match win. I don't feel 2 wins is significant to make any claims about advatanges in deck list, play skill, or luck even.
If I overstepped bounds by saying a specific record, I do apologize. It is certainly not my intent to disrespect you or any other player in my recordings or articles. I simply meant for the tone of the section to be:
"I played skilled player who was Playing a top-tier deck. We both agree he seems to be favored against my deck, but I have managed to beat it a couple times. Let's see what happened from both sides."
If anything, I hope people understand that I value your skill and perspective greatly in using your video to analyze the games from both sides of the table.
Again, I apologize Montolio for saying something that could be perceived as disrespectful, that is never ever my intention and will refrain from making any similar statements in the future. I am glad that not everyone has taken the statement as disrespectful or vain and appreciate you guys for saying so.
Nor did I. He said "I tend to agree with his assessment, and feel that the Null Rods do make this a favorable matchup for him, despite my good results." right after the bit you are making a stink about.
Well, yeah, you're right that this "evasive + swords + Jace" build is missing some of the components of a true X-Blade deck, namely Stoneforge Mystic and maybe even a more control-ish disruption suite (which is anyway hard to find room for in Tribal - you still had a good amount of removals, though). It still incorporates a good chunk of the signature X-Blade cards. Since you deemed X-Blade your previous Fish and your following Bird deck, I just supposed this was part of a long-term experiment. I was actually writing right now about how Birds proved to be the natural arrival point for the archetype. :)
Re: the Top 16. There're still 6 tournaments left this year and you're like one 1st place short of the Top 16. You can still make it. :)
MBC is always a contender. However, I think your MUC matchup is a bit biased. Muc always seems to trump MBC in my experience. Similarly, I find Tendrils to be a bit of a 'win more card' - against a very good player, it simply won't work due to sacrificing, interrupting the target etc.., and when it does work, your usually already in a winning position. As a fan of combo, I personally hate MBC, when I lose to it it is because of Wretch Mind - which I think you should be running 4x - until Fallen Empires goes online, it's the closest were gonna get to Hymn to Tourach! :)
Additionally, relic? MAYBE vs. T.existance decks, but seems kinda silly here.
Yeah, the Lashwrithe for Wurmcoil switch was mainly due to card availability at the time. I plan to add the Lashwrithes back in, although I might leave in one or two Wurmcoils. I like their ability to block the Mirran Crusader, recover lost life, and sacrificing the Wurmcoil to Phryexia's Core protects it from getting stolen or exiled. Not super relevant, but I have won games because I was able to take out my own creature and fizzle an opponent's spell.
I did update the Nulltread deck at some point with Sea Gate Oracles and a white splash for Kor Skyfisher. I can't remember everything I changed or if I increased/decreased the competitiveness, but it was fun watching cards flying all over the place. :)
I did not perceive that he was saying he was better than you, I took at while I was looking over the article last night that maybe the match up was better for him than he was being given credit for. That's just how I interpret it.
"After speaking with Montolio, he feels he is generally at an advantage against Welder decks, except that he has now lost to me twice in Daily Events."
Goat; I have to admit that some of my clan mates and I find it quite unpalatable that you say "except that he has now lost to me twice in Daily Events." in a public forum.
This comes across to me as in you are stating your play skill is superior to mine. Of course you are entitled to that opinion, but it would be advisable to not do so in an article.
I have beaten many top tier players, who are superior to me in play skill in DE's and have never once done something like mention in my video's "I have beaten this guy 5 times straight". That would clearly come across as an insult and disrespectful to the mentioned player.
I am sure you didn't intend that statement to come across this way, but I would advise you for future articles to not mention your DE records against other players in a public forum. It just comes across as vain.
Thanks everyone for the comments and I'm glad you liked this one. As I said in the article many times, this kind of decks & articles were the reason why I started Rogue Play in the first place. And I want to continue these series as long as the "beast in me" allows me to do so!
@GrandAdmiral: If you're going to replace Lashwrithe with some other cards, all I can advise you is to watch out for your mana curve. Lashwrithe is the perfect mid-game card for mono black. If you take it out and bring in Wurmcoil Engine, you may have trouble against fast decks. Oh and that Nulltread deck was indeed a very nice deck!
These are my favorite Rogue Play articles. I still bust out the Nulltread Gargantuan deck from a couple of years ago every once in a while. I like how there's a competitive budget option with paths to upgrade. Last night I played a couple of games with deck #2 (substituting 3x Wurmcoil Engine and 1x Batterskull for the Lashknifes because I owned the former but not the latter - it might be the first time a more expensive card was subbed for a less expensive card) last night. It's really fun sacrificing the Spine to the Phyrexia's Core and repeating. Can't wait for part two.
I really liked this style ofarticle. I play mainly budget casual and there aren't many articles written with a casual player in mind. Most of what you read are tournament quality decks that have cards out of my price range. Your article starts fairly budget and works up from there. In addition here are things that I can port over to my casual decks. I like your mix of removal sells. I'm always unsure how many doom blades/go for the throat/etc... to include. I also like the mycosynth wellspring, phryxian core, ichor wellspring package and will include this in other decks of mine that have mana problems.
Agreed. I perceived the comment to mean: "I think his deck has a favorable match-up with mine, yet the results have not played out that way. I think the match results are aberrations."
you know it.

I live in the Atlanta area. 314 is a reference to my favorite irrational number represented by a Greek symbol.

Ill be out of the top 50-100 so don't feel too bad. :D

Hey, thanks Goat I apprecaite the clarification. I appoligize as well if i took it out of context.
