I will always appreciate the work you put into this, and I was rightly confident that the Tribal article category was in safe hands with your reports. I hope that everything goes well for you in your studies.

Sorry to hear you are quitting the gig. I know you and I do not see eye to eye on some things but you were definitely one of the reasons why I got more into tribal magic in the first place (along with AJ). Hope your studies work out.

I tried similar deck but with the shield of oversoul -> I used pridemages, stewards of valerons and this 1/1 for W exalted guy. It was quite fast and having 4/4 vigilance indestructible flying guy is a sure win with most of the decks out there. Shield of Oversoul gives you the posibilty to use some creatures that don't have shroud and make yourself more aggro.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

    That would be fun

Ok ArchGenius there's bound to be weekends when I'll need a stand in, thanks

Sorry about the unfun game. I've had some like that too.

I disagree with your last paragraph though. If you aren't having fun in the game, quit. Because of the anonymous nature online you really can't choose not to play with someone before the game starts. However you can choose not to play with someone after the game starts. I was in a game with someone using Jhoria of the Ghitu as their commander. When he started suspending Eldrazi and Darksteel Colossus on turn 4, everyone said he wasn't any fun to play against and then quit (including me). A very clear message was sent that his deck violated the social contract. If this happened to him a couple of times I bet he'd never play the deck again.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

Shard, thank you for hosting this tournament. It's been entertaining every time I've attended it. I hope Flippers is able to take it over as I'd hate to see it end.

Also, I know it's hard to run a tournament every week without help. Flippers, if you ever need a substitute to run the tournament, I could do that.

We all need to get together and do a Puremtgo Commander game.

  • The Social Contract, Social Politics, and other Commander and EDH Goodies.   14 years 40 weeks ago

I am sorry you have played someone like that Scartore. I guess thats one advantage EDH has over Commander and because they have two different names, EDH won't get a bad rap because of the jerkiness of Commander. I think Leviathan hit it best when he mentioned the fact the internet has a lot of anominity. these people would not be acting like this if they were in real life. Still though, the fact that Commander hides behind the anonymous wall, is no excuss for people to act up. As stand up players we should still attempt to stick to the contract. If I were in Scartore's situation, I would of just quit. I can understand his reasoning for sticking in there, but my time is valuable, especially when it's rationed by a wife.

    Thanks for reading.

  • Pauper Recap: Team America, Take a Bow   14 years 40 weeks ago

Thanks for the reply. Well, not much to do except giving the deck a go. (Especially when I'm in search of something to run for the upcoming TNMO in Pauper. So far, I obtain the best results with the good ol' Burning Kiln - its version splashing blue for card drawing, presented on this site plays horribly, by the way, and I'm sticking to monored). I will try this Rock deck, but I'll definitely board some targeted discard to strengthen it against Storm.

  • The Social Contract, Social Politics, and other Commander and EDH Goodies.   14 years 40 weeks ago

Great series. Since I've been playing a lot of Commander lately, I've seen a lot of the social contract being shredded. One example from earlier this week, a player opened with a turn 3 Smokestack, followed by a turn 4 Land Equilibrium. I pointed out that that was a pretty nasty, antifun opener, and his response was pretty much "Whine, complain, spam all you want, i don't care as long as I win." And he did. Noone was able to draw into any hate for his backbreaking artifact or enchantment. By turn 7 I think he was the only player with any permanents, and proceeded to kill us all with a Phyrexian Processor set to 10. And he was a foul mouthed jerk the whole time.
It is much harder to deal with stuff like that online, but I have some advice. Don't quit. Every action the jerk has to spend swinging Emrakul at you is one more turn the other players have to topdeck a hallowed burial or Oblivion ring. Make the guy waste his time killing you. hopefully he'll get tired of it after awhile and move on. Try and be polite. I can swear better than most sailors, but that does nothing but encourage the jerk.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

I've always enjoyed these articles, as they remind me of when I played a ton of tribal back in the day. I can understand needing a break though. You shouldn't let me hold you back from writing about Commander though. The more, the merrier. It is always nice to get a different perspective.

Also, that soldier deck looks like a ton of fun.

Edit- oh yeah, email me about that beginner guide.

Sad to see you go shard, you've been a great and tolerant host. Thanks for all your time!

  • Freed from the Real #88: Attention all podcasters!   14 years 40 weeks ago

Hey guys, on again off again writer here, looking to gain your approval for the open position. Im a big eventer in the eternal and limited scene and have been doing it for a long time, I feel like I would have some helpful tips and tricks from my 4 years of Modo events and 6 years of paper eventing before that. Started getting into Standard and plan on playing SoM block when it's available, with a goal of actually qualifying and playing in all the Moc's events. So this is pretty serendipitious to see.

And, while I have your ear I would like to rebuttale against pimping on Modo. While I have to agree that standard and possibly extended are no big deal to pimp out your decks/collection, eternal magic is a completely different animal.

I started a mission back in December to fully pimp Classic Oath, and 9 months later the search for the perfect bling is still ongoing. Besides price reasons, such as 200 dollar force of wills, scarcity, and other pimp hunters make this fairly challenging.

Examples, it took me 9 whole months just to find somebody willing to sell foil Hurkyl's Recalls. 9 months! So of course I over payed for 2 copys. Do you know how hard it is to find foil Vintage playable uncommons from classic sets? It took me a month to get 5 of the 6 foil uncommons I wanted from Urza's Legacy, and I started this in release week when the drafts were going nutzo. Still havent gotten the last foil I want as well.

Besides this its hard to find Promo foils of chase tournament staples, example is Thirst for Knowledge, Brainstorm, Tormod's Crypt. Those cards don't just sit in the bots, because there are a finite amount. On top of all this, pimping is expensive, and unless your made of money, its going to take quite some effort to have the funds to buy these slightly more rare digital objects. This makes my 67 of 75 card foil oath deck that much more special for me, I had to event a lot to get those cards.

Lastly I know this is nowhere near the same scale as paper, but we lose cards as well from people quitting and otherwise losing access to their accounts, so some cards are more rare. Right now, if alpha (player not the set) left the game with out selling out, the system would lose 4 of every foil card, as well as 4 of every non foil card. That means there are only 28 Foil promo Yawgmoth's Will, and such for e v e r, or untill they re release that promo card.
    Wooo end rant-

  • The Social Contract, Social Politics, and other Commander and EDH Goodies.   14 years 40 weeks ago

Good stuff. People find plenty of ways to get around or completely dismiss the social contract online though. Something about the anonymous nature of the internet I guess. So in general Commander decks are more powerful than decks requiring pants. Up to the individual as to whether this is good or not.

The best piece of advice you gave us not to take things personally. Too often people get upset if they feel slighted or targeted. Its best to just let things slide of your back and learn from the experience. If your deck relies on Moat and someone removes it from the game, don't get angry. Figure out what you can do to make your deck better.

Also remember to have fun! It is supposed to be a game after all.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

I haven't been able to make it lately either, but I'll try and make the 25th. Sad to see Shard go, confident in Flip's ability to keep things running smoothly.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

Yes I'm willing to keep the tribal torch burning from the 9th of October onwards. I'm already doing other things the weekend before though so there would be a weekend without a host.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

What about passing the torch to another host. Blippy has ran it once or twice in your absence.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

If i'm inferring correctly from Flippers the event may not be leaving. I am more than willing to pass the reins to someone else who can do a good job. I may even play from time to time if someone else was to take over, just as it stands right now I need a break from tribal and maybe from magic seeing how everything goes. School is just a pain right now and I'm focusing on graduating and finding a job all at the same time. But thank you everyone.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

I finally will have time to join the Apocalypse to bad to see it going, I took a break and had to sell my collection I had going. Needed the money. But now got a small collection back and the first thing I did was got back into tribal. Built a deck which I will be displaying in my first article on this site. Will definately try to make it to the next events.

  • Tribal Apocaypse: At Your Funeral For a Friend   14 years 40 weeks ago

5 fireballs as a tribute to your work.
