I imagine that with a) Survival getting the axe and b) MED4 "revitalizing" Legacy, we'll see a nice chunk of Bant, New Horizons and Countertop decks popping up again, all of which use the Goyf.

  • State of the Program - January 14th 2011   14 years 23 weeks ago

I was wondering the same thing. Could it be that survival is dead in legacy so people are returning to hardcasting big creatures?

Anyone know why goyf doubled in value last week?!

  • MMogg's Musings #1: Commander Kemba Reporting for Duty   14 years 23 weeks ago

Yeah, I tend to be aggressive just to make the games shorter (and more interesting).

I'll start throwing everything at someone early if they start with card or draw advantage even if it leaves me open to other players. I played a game the other day where someone had Dakkon Blackblade as commander and had an early Land Tax, Divining Top, Reliquary Tower, and Mind's Eye. I had him down to 14 before he could mount a comeback and eventually won. Probably would have taken him out if the other players weren't just sitting back. They didn't realize the threat and lost the game because of it.

You can only sit back and wait for your board position to develop if someone else's isn't developing into a better position than yours. It's tough to recognize that, which is why I usually err on the side of being overly aggressive. Plus it makes the game more fun then just hitting F2 all the time.

You obviously didn't think this one through, Petey. Starting an article with a lolcat then trying to assert some sort of pseudo-intellectual sense of dominance with the reader? Come on. You aren't contributing anything to the community, which completely undermines the purpose of your position.

Stop writing please. I know all this attention empowers you, but if you knew anything about anything, you'd shut up before you cause yourself more harm.

Well, I really have to thank you for your constructive criticism.

I'm always torn between searching for info (like I did in past articles) and write just about my own thinking.
When I wrote this I actually did not read anything about the current decks on purpose, and it's clear to me now that I should have. :)

The decks you mentioned seem very interesting, and I'm definitely googling them right after this comment is sent.

(P.S. I actually ruled out Screeching Silcaw during the deckbuilding process because it works on metalcraft but I totally forgot to mention it. D'oh. XD )

Only 5 min games I've had were, Grand Arbiter, Jhoira or Azusa with Emrakul. Since Emrakul is going to be banned, I'm never worries about short games. I think everyone's goal is to end the game before real life gets in the way.

Are I have no problem attacking people in the early rounds as it accomplishes a purpose: it makes games shorter. I don't want a 5 minute game but I really don't want a 2 hour game. Keeping the game time shorter is reason enough to be aggressive in my eyes.

  • MMogg's Musings #1: Commander Kemba Reporting for Duty   14 years 23 weeks ago

Merci for the goodness gracious great balls of fire! =)

Yeah, sometimes it's a really hard to decipher line between acceptable aggression and unacceptable, contract-breaking aggression. I don't know anyone who enjoys playing against Uril, and he can be very hyper aggressive. I find he is generally ok, but gets groans. Definitely online there is a large variance in deck power levels, and it's not always easy to tell which table is full of sharks and which is full of lambs. Maybe in time I can remember.

See, it depends what you mean by a successful deck. If you mean to win the table, then yeah, it can be difficult. But I know I have not been cutthroat enough to attack people in the early turns as they do nothing but draw-go. So I can't really say if I were to go full out if I'd win or not. In some ways, I don't mind either way, as long as I have had a genuinely good game. At least, that's the conclusion I've come to about myself and this format. That said, I have also never been blown out with her. =/

    Well done article. Nice read.

Being agressive isn't an issue with the social contract. It's playing really powerful decks t could classify themselves as tourney decks. You want a good deck, but not so good that no one ever gets to play or have a good time. After a some time of playing online, you will get to know the ussual players and know whether or not you need to take care of them early reguardless of what they are playing.

I like Kemba but I haven't seen a successful Kemba deck yet. Most times she gets blown out of the water. if unchecked she gets out of hand quickly. I am thinking a deck white deck that has kemba in to compliment it would be better then building a deck around Kemba herself. Otherwise I like the deck idea.

I realized after submitting the deck that my flow was simular to Sheldon's, and in actuality, I wasn't trying to. I find the articles he does on other peoples decks boring, and I was hoping to take the same approach and make it more interesting, but all I did was a carbon copy of his layout. I intended to add more to the article and it became so long, I decided to do it in two parts. Maybe if it were done in one article, it would of seemed more apealing.

Anyways in the next article I make some changes and hope you like it more.

I've thought to many times of doing a kind of ramp deck into a Furnace of Rath and Exsanguinate... but just like you said with Hatred, I'm sure I would be auto-blocked, even if it were turn 40.

  • The Underdecks - 1 : Run to the Mill!   14 years 24 weeks ago

Now, I'll admit that I don't know too much about Standard Pauper, however there's been an awful lot of discussion about milling in Pauper, and it seems like you haven't read any of it. I ran a UW Ally Mill deck for a while, both a classic and pre-SOM standard version. There's also a number of Jace's Erasure decks floating around, and the two generally don't mix. Now perhaps the classic decks won't translate into Standard, but you need to look at them and understand how they are effective to give you ideas. The most competitive one is the UB Jace Teachings deck, although the GU Fog Jace does well against decks with creatures.

The fundamental problem with milling is that it generally doesn't build your board position or interfere with your opponent's plan. So the three general approaches that I've seen are:

    1) Use Halimar Excavator because he breaks this mold. Milling attached to a creature, so you develop a board position and mill.
    2) Keep the board completely empty, so nobody has a board position. If you play zero creatures, you can really stack up the removal/control elements of your deck. With Jace's Erasure, you make your card advantage count twice--it gets you more removal, and moves you closer to winning.
    3) Make your opponents board position useless. Instead of removal, you load up on fog type effects.

Halimar Excavator and Jace's Erasure are great because they are wincons all on their own; you don't have to dedicate a lot of slots in your deck to milling. However, then you have to draw them. In classic, we use Muddle the Mixture to tutor them up, not sure what you would do in Standard.

Also, you didn't even mention Screeching Silclaw. How can you write an article about Standard Pauper mill and not even mention him?

Overall, I give you a failing grade because it seems like you didn't do your homework.

  • MMogg's Musings #1: Commander Kemba Reporting for Duty   14 years 24 weeks ago

Very true, and for some players they will whine about everything and call whatever you play "unfair". I just would rather avoid that as it takes all the fun out of playing.

I like your take on the situation, and I somewhat agree that their ramping is a way to dominance and it's their own responsibility to defend themselves. That said, it's so hard to pull the trigger, so to speak.

  • The Underdecks - 1 : Run to the Mill!   14 years 24 weeks ago

Well, technically, you also win by "alternate win conditions", but I guess none of those appear at common, so yeah.

Although, other than that WOTC dislikes it, there's probably nothing wrong with making Helix Pinnacle or Darksteel Reactor at Common. Limited shouldn't always have to define everything. And I would love to see a Draft deck or Pauper deck generate 101 mana, while staying alive, faster than it can generate 20 damage.
