• Magical Potpourri - My Quest For Fun Continues   14 years 9 weeks ago

Good to see you writing again. I know I missed the hand drawn dragons...

Those commander games were fun, and really helped me tune my deck. The bug with Curiosity (if that's what it was) just crashed MTGO for me. Sad times about not including the deck list though. It seemed like every card in your deck either cantripped or drew more cards. Those were good games.

And good for you for including an 80 card decklist. That's thinking outside the box that I don't think most people would be willing to try, even in a casual environment.

I forgot to share my list for this event so I will post it here if anyone cares :3

    Creatures:
    4 brimstone dragon
    4 bogardan hellkite
    2 hellkite igniter
    1 rorix the bladewing
    4 hellkite charger
    4 simian spirit guide
    1 magister sphinx
    1 razia boros archangel

    Enchantments:
    4 where ancients tread
    4 ardent plea

    Sorcery:
    4 demoni dread
    3 hypergenesis

    Instan:
    4 violent outburst

    Lands
    1 kher keep
    1 fungal reaches
    4 khalani garden
    3 molten slapheap
    4 vivid crag
    3 vivid grove
    4 vivid marsh

    SB:
    4 wispmare
    4 oblivion ring
    2 hoverguard sweepers
    4 volition reins
    1 hypergenesis

Once again credit goes to a_new_hope for the list, thanks buddy.
Overall the deck seems really strong (I lost no matchs except the finals, wich was really frustating). The SB has a lot of tools to hande rule of law and arcane lab but I really expected no cascade decks at all so I didnt bothered with countermagic, the finals provemed this to be a bad choice since I never actually sided anything in/out (I sided a card playing against OLAW acctualy since he was playing countermagic I added the fourth geneis and sided out razia).
One of the things I like the most about this list is the fact that it can cast the big dragons via time spiral storage lands if needed be.

I do believe something like that is being discussed on the mothership forums. Multiple people/organizations have chimed in on it.

    Hey,

Just to make a suggestion. What about mtgotraders organizing some sort of Erik Frigorg remembrance tourney?

It could be something waky like momir, or some other casual format, players would pay some entry fee, prizes could be singles (that mtgotraders could get at buy price, or someting like that), and profits to go to Erik's family? Something or other around these lines?

It could be a way to complement the donations...

Great recap article as always... I wish I have the time to join the pauper community again :(

  • Cascading Combos   14 years 9 weeks ago

Great attitude! I've lost many a game to similar scenarios...but in the end, it's our own doing :)

  • Cascading Combos   14 years 9 weeks ago

I did misclick in the game against Olaw because my two-year-old was jumping in my lap, but, to be fair, she was acting like a toddler should when a promised trip to the park has been postponed. The play error lies with me. They all do, including a doozy in this tournament when my finger slipped off the control key because she was feeding me blueberries which prevented me from discarding my whole hand to the brushhopper pre-balance. Blueberries and roughhouse beat the hell out of a game win any day.

I agree, Nagarjuna, Heirloom is fun because the community is generally good natured. Thanks for the updates, Olaw.

  • Cascading Combos   14 years 9 weeks ago

Er thanks...yet another in a long line of bad webcam shots. Tough getting it to work at all much less give a clear unsaturated photo. But it beats the alternative. :p Lets me skype with family.

I should note to Olaw: I do like the content of the article, hence my critique is on the formatting. :)

Paul - love the new pic!

  • Limited Edition: Double Down   14 years 9 weeks ago

P1P2 - I'm always happy with Nested Ghoul, it always does its job for me. I don't think the other three you mentioned are on a similar level.
P1P6 - I agree that Flensermite is not a signal that poison is open. However, I have no blue at that point, so why would I pick the Mirran Spy? It's not terrible, but it's not good enough to want to play, and I certainly don't want to move into blue for it. The artifact creatures are safe picks, and I wouldn't fault you for taking one. But I feel like giving up a 6 or 7 costing artifact creature for a poison guy I wouldn't mind maindecking is better if poison ends up open, whereas with the artifact creature picks, I'm not really dedicating myself to a plan.
P1P10 - You are probably right, I usually overvalue signaling when it's more correct to take a card I don't want to play against in the pool.

I did not try to force infect from the get-go, though with double Spread the Sickness and a Piston Sledge, you can bet that I was going to go into it if nothing else presented itself. And nothing really did; pack 2 I opened up a bunch of poison creatures (and nothing else) and then just went for it.

    Draft 2
P1P1 - Can't fault you for this. I was hesitant going for a Green Sun's Zenith because the last three times I drafted it, I didn't see another green card. (edit - and actually, my reasoning for not taking GSZ is kind of silly to the point of nonsense. Thanks for making me go back and reevaluate)
P1P5 - I don't know why I would consider it. Even when I'm solidly in blue, I don't want to take Mirran Spy over a good card of a second (or third) color, or a very playable artifact.

    Thanks for the response!

p1p2 nested ghoul. Very very subpar card in my experience. Good with equipment, but not much else. crawler, pest or sire wouldve been the right pick here.
p1p6 flensermite is not a signal that poison is open. The blue flier or an artifact creature are both likely to be better since you have no infect yet.
p1p10 concussive bolt or predation over caustic hound. Its pretty much unplayable, so take the card that could actually kill you instead.
You basically tried to force infect, and it did not work. It seemed that infect was clearly not open to you after that first pack.

    Draft 2
p1p1 zenith is worth a pack, and is a huge bomb if you end up in green. serum raker is a decent flier with a potential downside that requires almost as much color commitment as zenith. I would have snapped up zenith in a heartbeat, because it has much much more potential.
p1p2 hydra is a huge bomb, and would have immedietly validated the zenith pick.
p5p1 you didnt even consider the mirran spy

Just my thoughts, everyone drafts differently.

Really good read, I'll check out all the videos when I get home later, I agree as I think I've already said in the event thread that no ban is needed since as you show there are plenty of good cascade hate cards to sb.

I wonder what happened to the font style. :-/ Sorry for the mix-up, guys.

  • Pauper Standard in Brief: MPDC 12.08 Metagame   14 years 9 weeks ago

Yeah, I had Manic Vandals maindecked but against all the lifegain possibilities around I had quite a hard time bringing down my opponent's life points. Lifestaff, Lone Missionary, Kabira Crossroads are all Very powerful, especially in a BW Control deck that abuses Skyfishers and Graveyard recursion. Hard times indeed for pure aggro players. :-)

Thanks for the feedback, hope to read you soon. ;-)

  • Pauper Standard in Brief: MPDC 12.08 Metagame   14 years 9 weeks ago

Great update, especially the spotlight on the BGW deck. I brought my own Kuldotha Red list to the tourney thinking I'd do just fine. Instead, Owain landed first turn Sylvok Lifestaff's in both games and there was just no way for my Goblins to keep up with the lifegain. His deck just ate me alive, it's a great addition to the metagame. (I might have to maindeck four insurance-policy Manic Vandals from now on!)

Gotta say, not loving the colors of the text. More subdued(darker) colors on the white background are better. Or if you really want to have a different looking area you could try boxes of text coded with css to look nice and change the box backgrounds to whatever you want.
