If someone from the community has time to listen and make bulletin points each week that would be awesome just post them in the comments below and everyone can benefit thanks for the kind offer guys.
Its not that i dont like what i hear, or that i dont want peoples feedback, obviously i am the only on of the 3 who feel like this MIGHT be a bad idea, as zach and andy have not chimed in. ill honestly do whats best for the show as i enjoy it and the listeners are the only reason we are able to do it on a weekly basis. Is it not ok to question a revamp, i mean we have recently shook up the way we present and the content we are doling out, based off listener comments.
And in all honesty, zach does all of our editing while he is slow at his desk job, while i might not like the idea of bullet points and what not, it is completely on zach if he wants to start the bulletpoints while editing. I know personally i work most wednesday with in the time that the audio is edited and the article is submitted. I honestly would not have time every week to listen to it and make bullet points, because of my schedule.
If Andy or Zach thinks it the hotness i wont stop them from implementing it, i just know that i would not be able to reliably and consistenly make this happen.
George you guys asked for feedback, you got some. And then you argue with your listeners because you dont like what you hear? Great way to inspire more feedback bro :X
Honestly if it's as simple as these guys are making out doing something that can increase your number of hits and listener base is hardly ever a bad thing.
Even if you'd like to think that your every word is so important that everyone needs to listen to it all not everyone is going to agree with that viewpoint, so why not try to make yourself as marketable as possible?
Lastly the Album vs CD debate it all comes down to personal preference. Music like a painting are both forms of art what medium you choose to prefer always comes down to the individual listening/looking.
The format is wildly different from M12 draft. Since there are so many artifacts, it becomes easy to splash stuff. Infect can be good, but it also can be a trap. I would just try to build with a decent curve that isn't too top heavy, open a bomb, and stay open to your second color until around mid-second pack and you should be golden.
I love NMS drafts. They have been the only way I have been able to salvage any limited rating points.
Thanks, Whiffy. It's not so much a question of 'want' as 'can't', for reasons I won't go into. But you never know, if enough people want me involved, maybe they'll think of something. :D
I must say I'm with MMogg, GainsBanding and endless here. One of the main reason I don't listen to podcasts is their length and, usually, the fact that among the things I'm interested in, there also are things I'm not and I'd like to skip.
I must be honest, the way I feel about podcasts is definitely affected by the fact that english is not my first language and in order to properly understand everything I have to keep my attention level higher than any other english-speaking person, still I found myself stopping an italian podcast as well because they were talking about something I wasn't interested about and got bored never to resume again the listening.
I tried different methods in the past, from letting my mind wander while the people in the podcast were talking about something I wasn't interested in, to doing something else in the meantime but the result, 90% of the times, was that I missed the part where they resumed talking about interesting things and stopped never to resume again.
Listen to hours long podcast hence became a pain and stopped altogether, while I still listen to shorter ones when I know I'm interested for sure.
A list of arguments and a skippable list of bullet points would be absolutely perfect and I think it will bring more listeners, even those who are not super interested in the argument.
For example let's take your podcast: I'm not into classic and frankly not interested in joining, but informations themselves won't hurt and I like to listen to decktechs, but I'm definitely not interested (at least yet) in discussions about the current metagame; discussion that may be vital for a classic player. Hence I would skip the meta part while the classic player would not.
The bullet point list would definitely bring people like me to listen to parts of your show and at worst won't affect the classic player who was already interested, at best it will increase the replayability of the podcast, like GainsBanding said.
Why is it backwards thinking for me to want the listeners to , A) listen to the ENTIRE podcast, B) listen to it in the order that we produced it. Its not like we have a 2 hour show, its aproximatly 40 mins maybe 45 on average, thats 3 listens at 15 mins a pop. If we were consistenly over an hour sure then maybe, but asking for bullet points, to me, is asking to skip what you dont want to hear.
Also I am pretty sure that musicians, had absolutly 0 input on the adapation of cd's. That is all the guys who work with money there, and if im not mistaken, dont cds have a worse sound then records? maybe clearer, but not as good, or so ive heard many times.
Theres nothing stopping anyone from jumping around, there are built in bulletpoints with in the article.
I feel like there is a natural flow to the way that the podcast runs, we dont have segments that are broken up with music or whatnot, if we put in bullet points, and people jumped around it would start off abruptly, with out the organic lead in from subject to subject.
There is Mentor of the Meek, but that isn't really the kind of card draw you are talking about. There is also Bloodgift Demon, which is almost constructed playable, but not quite. And so far, that is it. Only creature based card draw. Nothing like Preordain. But I wouldn't be surprised to see something like Mental Note.
You know, it just seems odd that Innistrad and SOM are so completely different. I don't see much if any symmetry at all between those two sets and the core M12 set. But I do enjoy some of the cards in Innistrad, and Lilliana has to be the most broken planeswalker I have ever seen.
But my focus is on that last card. I think white weenie is going to make a comeback. Like real white weenie that used to have Savannah lions and not have tempered steel. That 1/1 for 1 mana that gets a pump when creatures die? That is a great card, especially with all the low costing humans in the game.
When it comes to curses, I don't see them being played much. In limited, the mil will get played because people play Jace's erasure and that 1/2 that mills 2 cards.
But I can't figure this part out. When the main cards in M12 were released, everyone said the game was moving more towards mono-colored decks. But this looks like they are trying to force people to play combinations that don't fit too well with the SOM block. Even with the lands, they aren't as good as fetch lands. I don't know, maybe some things will change, but so far there hasn't been much in terms of artifacts after 3 entire sets of metalcraft. And there were no artifacts worth people's time in M12. It just looks like the next standard will be weird.
Then again there is another, what, 200 cards left to release? And eventually it will still come down to people playing blue/black control regardless of what is in the set, although I'm getting my green cards ready because I'm waiting for a resurgence of green. And I have to hope that they come out with other elves than just the one elf that gives a white mana. Elves are fun.
*And quick question for oraymw, have you heard of any card draw in Innistrad? I'm not seeing much right now that doesn't mean you discard. I just mean straight up card draw like Preordain
Credit where credits due I say! I've only been into MTGO for a month now, but I do find a lot of peoples attitudes being quite negative, even when it's intended as constructive it's still delivered in a fairly bad way. After a game and a guys comments I was really turned off playing for a couple days, I haven't come across people like this since I played R/L magic 15 years ago!!! But that said, I've met some very friendly and helpful people as well.
I've almost got through your Pure MTGO - SOM archives and will give my first draft a go over the weekend. It seems to me unless you get some bombs to the contrary - Infect is the way to go, I really like the Metalwork mechanic but I haven't seem many people playing it. I'm a bit intimidated by playing against Infect, the decks I came across in casual I really struggled to have an appropriate answer to.
I appreciate the comment. It's hard to put out a timely article like this and do it so quickly. Normally I like to take more time editing, but with this article and the last, I just had to crank them out as quickly as possible. I was really worried that I missed some key points.
As for humor, I've tried to be funnier in the past, but I have a hard time doing it in writing. I'm a pretty funny guy in person, but I have a very subtle and nuanced type of humor, which doesn't translate very well onto the page, since I rely on body language and voice tone in order to communicate that I said something that's supposed to be funny.
I'll try to make my future articles more entertaining though. :)
Yay for Classic League coverage! I'm glad someone from the podcast is winning that way we get more publicity. ;P Also awesome that the first two decks you guys discussed are guys from Clan Lotus Farmers! =D
"If you only have 15 mins at a time, listen to the first 15. then come back and listen to the next 15.
It seems counterproductive for us to put in bulletpoints that way you can skip what ever it is you dont want to listen too."
You're right, George, the last thing you want to do is give people what they want. >_< Musicians should never have embraced CDs, because then people would not listen to the album in total. Let's go back to analog!! Sorry, just seems like a backwards viewpoint.
@ Zach: looks like Goblins was a real THORN in your side. ;) In all fairness, that game 3 mulligan was self-inflicted, rightly or wrongly. Gobbos, I think, is the real deal. themagicman's brand of Gobbos is highly disruptive with Thorns and Magus of the Moon, so I don't think one can just blame dumb luck to some extent. You were right to mulligan, of course, but what I'm saying is that is a testament to the strength of Gobbos that it pressures decks to have an early line of play or risk getting run over.
Those Dredge matches were pretty epic. Thanks for recording all these matches.
Great job on the cast, guys. Great to see you, Andy, back in form with some great perspectives.
And your images are great, all formatted to the exact size (how did you do this? html?), you already seemed to source the Innistrad Images (again, how?), etc....your read is a bit dry for my taste, however I think this the tendency of informational articles. I would have tried (key word: tried) for humor.
Otherwise, thanks for this. You did a great job and thorough.
I should note that I played with a Twin Mite deck in a couple of the early Heirloom events. :p That is what is funny about this format. One moment a card is worthless, the next the broken stuff you do with it gets noticed. Welcome to pure Winter. Hope to see more from you.
Combine this with Angelic Destiny and some humans of note (Bladehold etc) and you have a very casual deck. I am fairly impressed by the amount of synergy between the different colors flavorwise. Even if the effective cards are less strong than we hope for individually they tell a great story and seem to be mesh well together.

Making this card human adds extra style points.

correct. good ol phil mcclurry
good job paul, obviously i knew the content, but i was a fan of the way you put it together with the images and stuff.
and yes they are my homeboys, and im just 3 square meals to the kitties
Thanks

That was . . . intense. I think I know Sir Penguin of Whiff much better now.
George, so the shop owner put you up to the "hitting on granny" incident with the prize being the Powder Keg? Is that right? LOOOL

Hi, My name is Andrew and I am an MTGO noob...
You say events are Sunday @ 1:30 PM, but in which time zone? this format seems like fun.
Thank you for pointing it out to me.

Good to see another Heirloom article - thanks for publishing this one and all the work you put into the Format!
I realy do like the last bannings, now creative deck building is back again!
If you are interested in the history and development of Heirloom check those articles:

Yeah, it can work, I'll try that too, thanks for the suggestion. :)
