I love the goofy decks. It's awesome when you find out they work better than expected. I recently built an insect theme deck and it's a lot of fun to play. When I look at the cards there's no reason it should work very good, but somehow it plays alright and is a lot of fun.
Kudos for giving the fungi some love. I remember when the thallids first came out in Fallen Empires and I thought they were awesome. I know better now, but they will always have a special place in my heart. One of the first Classic Tribal decks I built used fungi and it's still a lot of fun to play.
Very interesting point. In regards to supply, I agree that is a factor however I see many examples of cards where the supply is steady but the price has increased considerable. So it has to be considered for sure, but other factors can drive prices up. In regards to regular rares holding value, you may be right with this and perhaps mythic rares are the only cards worth investing in.
In terms of my other picks, I certainly have missed in my assessment thus far - however all standard prices right now have plummeted. So I am not sure if my card selection rational is flawed or if I am just stuck in a bad market. Anyway even if I am a horrid card picker for investment advice, at least I hope people find my articles interesting and fun to read!
I agree with both you and howlett23 in many ways. And to be honest, all 4 of my articles were testing the theory that MTGO would be comparable to the stock market. It may be that I conclude that there is no relation and therefore these articles will only be a way to educate people on finance terms with a fun subject like magic. But my initial indication is that there is some similarities and at the very least technical analysis of charts will prove valuable.
One thing I don't think you're taking into account enough is just how difficult it is for a regular rare to maintain a price beyond a few tix, simply because of supply (particularly in a triple drafted set like AVR). Take a look at two of the previous regular rare's you've looked at - runechanter's pike and copperline gorge - both of which have plummeted since your buy recommendations despite both being solid options seeing decent amounts of competitive play. Regular rare's just don't hold much value, it's a testament to the extraordinary power and multi-format viability of Snapcaster Mage that it's still at 6-7 tix but that should basically be seen as the cap for a rare.
So in short, I can only see one way for the price of cavern of souls to go and that's down. Add the fact that the card is now starting to be seen as overrated, with much fewer options than originally predicted due to how frequently it's just a vanilla colourless land, and that when it is used it's typically only 2-3 copies max and if it was possible to short cards then I'd recommend doing so for it atm.
As the Sun Quan player I want to say that without my Reweave on the fruition the game might have ended slightly differently but that Symbiosis + Craterhoof end game is brutal. Came about very unexpectedly.

of tying in finance concepts to MTGO...this was an entertaining article and has some good points for people who are not financially educated. The only major disparity in the correlation used here is that these cards are tools and many pros will overpay to get the tech sooner, thus allowing them to profit from thier winnings...the stock market doesnt really have that angle...ie i can't buy IBM stock to help me get free Apple stock, so our little world of MTGO is an animal of it's own nature. IMO.
Nice analysis of the Modern meta. I'm starting to take a bit of an interest in the format and might give it a go. From the title of your article though, I was expecting a bit more discussion about how Avacyn Restored might impact the format.
yes. Sure if players want to get fresh ideas i still hold few tribal decks what your comunity havent unlock yet. :) I make little chance for my spellshaper deck when avacyn came out. Basic idea of deck is try to fill your graveyard using spellshapers ability. Early game Greenseeker and Icatian Crier are best options. Squadron Hawks gives you more cards to recycle if you are some reason short. And when Hawks are in graveyard just hold one in your hand and recycle rest back to the deck by using Mistveil Plains. When your graveyard holds Unburial rites and something big to resurect just use Unburial Rites flashback ability to get it table. I also notice that Angel of Glory´s Rise bring back half of your deck (and kill all zombies) so it fit to deck´s idea better than just some big creatures, what i earlier use. You can survive multiple Wrath of God effects and still hold line. Other plan, when wraths arent there, is simply weenie. When you have sigil captain on table, just use Icatian Crier and Stampede Driver over and over again. Ealier i had some angels and monsters to animate (sheoldred, whispering one), but i feel that it broke theme, so Reya Dawnbringer does almost same and fit better to theme. Divine reckoning is great when you already have big threat out. Just imagine you keep your Reya, what next round brings back Angel of glory rise, wich brings back rest of your army. Sweet! Play against Zombie decks and soon you have no friends ;)
and now the decklist how it is (my multiland problem is still huge)
That 3CB looks fun. I came up with Wild Ricochet - Laboratory Maniac - Decree of Silence as a hard-to-beat trio, only to see all three cards on the banned list. Can't blame 'em.
It'd be a shame to see these go to bi-weekly, although certainly from a stats perspective it'd be understandable. Would you consider doing a column once a week but with stats every two weeks?
I'd certainly be interested in an overview of the AVR commons, I'm sure there's some playable ones out there. I ran into a fairly mean hexproof/enchant deck playing abundant growth in the practice room the other day and obviously ghostly flicker enables some pretty disgusting things in post and fissure storm decks. Young Wolf has also found its way into a couple of stompy decks (that card's basically a strictly worse skaggran pit skulk from what I can see, but i guess it's still playable). Also idk if burn can be viable but there's a couple of cards which could give it some extra juice.

Yea.. MTGO is hard to compare to RW finance b/c hoarding is much easier on MTGO and you basically can't short things unless you already own them.
I think you should focus on Mythics and small-set cards though.

Not to mention that the initial price is also heavily affected by cards availability. It was a good reading anyway.
As the Sun Quan player I want to say that without my Reweave on the fruition the game might have ended slightly differently but that Symbiosis + Craterhoof end game is brutal. Came about very unexpectedly.
If I did make reductions it would be the stats, only time I skip a week is when I get so swamped with RL :(

Oh, those cards were "real" at some point, but the Vanishing Variant kills the winning list + anything that shows up on 3+ lists in 1 round.
Might make me wanna play some week...LOL @ Scapeshift/Prismatic Omen/Valakut....

Senility
I swear I just rolled a cigarette
It's nowhere to be found
Lately it seems I always forget
Absentmindedness abounds
They say that memory is the second thing to go
I forget the first
So now I try to make words about senility flow
And uhhh... uhhh... uhhh... yeah
If/when I do another, I will keep those in mind. Thanks!
