Thanks for the advice I will definitely do that next time. Think I might go over some of the questions I see everyone who is new to gatherling ask at their first event as well.
Thanks for the feedback. The list in the article is must closer to my ideal multiplayer list than my ideal 1v1 list. I don't run separate lists, though I do like that idea for the future.
My view is that more than half of the people who play the 1v1 room seem to play casual lists and I'm more than sufficiently competitive with them without specific tuning. There are certainly some tuned up 1v1 lists that I can't possibly compete with, but that's okay too. I watch them do their thing, hopefully see a couple cool new interactions or cards, and then I can grab a new game with a new opponent. It's pretty easy when you don't have to shuffle a giant pile of cards like paper magic.
I play exclusively on the Beta client now. I like the collection, deckbuilding, and draft interfaces much more on the beta client. I don't like the multiplayer interface on the beta client at all. It's very hard to see each opponent's permanents and I hope they figure out a fix before too long. It's a big part of why I've been playing more 1v1.
And Serra Ascendant on turn 1 is just lame because it doesn't require work like other formats to turn it on. Had they worded it like Blood Baron of Vizkopa or Chalice of Life it'd be a completely different thing. When I want to play with it, i stick to Modern where it's meant to be played.
Thanks again for the feedback and I'll keep your suggestions in mind for the next one.
@Tromni - Glad you enjoyed the article! I'm not a huge EDH fan, but White is my favorite color so I made sure to read you article just to see what kind of tricks my color is up to. Good stuff, can't wait to see your next one!
@kuma
I did see the spoiler for Thassa, but since it wasn't official, I didn't want to discuss it, just in case. I'm not sure if you played during great spoiler "oops" moments like Eyes of the Wisent or Manaplasm? I didn't want to "be that guy". If Thassa turns out as spoiled, it does give Zur another card to get worked up over! Heck, I can't wait to see what the other 4 do!
I agree that Runed Halo is a sweet little card. An idea I like to kick around is Halo as the only card less than 3 and using Ardent Plea to basically have eight 8 Halos in the deck. Aka = H8lo. SB in Rest in Peace or Stony Silence as needed.
Greater Auramancy and Retether were both in my notes...I apparently skipped right over both of them? Auramancy is great in an all Enchantment decks as it does everything Privileged Position does at almost 1/3 of the cost. The creature part is usually redundant when Auras only go on hexproof cards. That 'mancy will now protect the Gods and other Enchantment Creatures is pretty important. Another card to keep an eye on...
Form of the Dragon was originally in the article (What it does: Makes you breathe fire!!). I was going to list the cards by decks - such as 'The Enduring Ideal Package' - 'the Sovereigns Package' and so forth, but couldn't get it to flow like I wanted so I scrapped it. In the process, Form lost its place. When I revisit this, expect to see it in at least one of the deck lists.
I can't wait to see if OtV finally gets to pull out some Enchantments! And yeah, I think the Standard version of that deck was called Steelyard and was a counter to Jund for a while thanks to Sphinx of the Steelwind and Angel.
Idyllic might be reprinted; I'd put it up their with Sprawl and Coronet in the "very possible category". It has already shot up a few dollars since last week. I can't tell if that is half the fun or half the stress of spoiler season. :)
Interesting new series. I haven't heard too many people say that they love White. Soldier tribal is always fun. Couple of questions.
You say that you play both 1v1 and multiplayer. Do you make changes to the decks when you do this? There are obviously cards out there that scale better with more players, and the two environments are completely different. I don't play 1v1, and if I tried to take my decks into that environment I would get smoked most of the time. Maybe you could include a section that discusses the deck's relative strengths and weaknesses in each environment as well.
I see that you're playing on the Beta client. Do you play multi games on there? What are you experiences?
I've played this PRE before and enjoyed it. It is far superior to most other "budget formats", in that it exempts lands. That allows much greater deck diversity and easier multicolor deck construction. When I first started on Mtgo during ZEN block, I got all the dual lands in standard and just built tons of decks, which actually can get you a lot of play for your investment since most nonland nonmythics are pretty cheap. There are lots of players for whom that describes their collection. This is therefore much closer to what budget Standard play actually looks like than something more restrictive such as pauper or heirloom.
As for the deck's particulars, I know I tried to play G/B with heavy removal and just kill everything when I entered the event and it was still not enough to handle smawatts' Naya blitz deck. I even had 4 Human Frailty in the sideboard! Nice to see a control deck doing well, as I had thought Naya was practically unbeatable in the format.
I assume you didn't make it in time to see Thassa being spoiled (or you did, but didn't trust the spoiler? I see you made sort of a mention between the lines.) Zur is very happy.
I can't say enough good things about Runed Halo. I used it to fight a lot of single-wincon combo decks, including Storm — too bad at some point both Splinter and Pod stopped having single wincons in their decks. I went so far as to use it main deck. It's really more versatile that one might think: I once won a game by shutting down Tarmogoyf with it!
Using Porphyry Nodes (which is a color-shifted Drop of Honey, by the way) to fight Bogle: now, that's something I never thought of. It might deserve a try in the sideboard, even if it's a bit narrow. Then again, so are Spellskite and Back to Nature most of the times.
I feel like Greater Auramancy deserves a mention. Also Form of the Dragon, which is in the Modern pool, and it's sort of an enchantment finisher (very risky but a lot of fun).
Open the Vaults never really cared about enchantments (so far). Vaults.dek was all about artifacts, since you could dump a bunch of them in the graveyard, then (especially in formats where the artifact lands were legal) sacrifice a bunch of others to Krark-Clan Ironworks, cast Open the Vaults, get everything back plus a couple of big Sphinges and 40 life due to Filigree Angel. Good times.
I just bought a playset of Idyllic Tutor, just to be safe, but it's the card I'm more afraid could end up reprinted in Theros. The name matches the flavor (where they can't really reprint anything Verduran or Mesan or Argothian), and the mechanic is generic enough, and "supportive" enough.
Glad that you are going to spotlight the PREs. They are FREE oppurtunities for players to try some new things and earn some credits. You hardly ever see the FREE attached to cardboard events (stores cost money to upkeep and all).
A few suggestions:
Use hyperlinks for Gatherling.com and the Event's info page. People that are curious will take a look if all they have to do is click.
Possibly discuss what the Top 8 looked like for the last few weeks of the event you are discussing? The lists are up on Gatherling once the event is over. You don't have to show every deck - but maybe just the placings and deck names/types? Some people might be intrigued by the rules of an event, but need a little more to entice them?
You might want to mention that Gatherling has filters that check the legality of a card once you submit it. I'm sure some people mgiht be overwhelmed by some of the building restrictions, especially if they spend time brewing up something but then don't know if it's legal or not?
By far the most interesting enchantment based deck I've played against recently was a control deck that ran Paradox Haze and all the Honden Shrines like Honden of Night's Reach. It was in a control shell and really became inevitable once it hit a certain critical mass.
1) Why did they feel the need to change the venue of the CCC and what does this mean for future CCCs?
2) Is there going to be a resurgence of the importance of counter spells and control style spells ever?
3) When is the p9 due on MTGO? What will be its price point, delivery method, etc. How do they think this will effect the classic and legacy formats (other than shifting classic into vintage)?
4) Is there a chance that they may relent on some of the more needful features of the new client before setting it as the only one available? (To my mind, minimally fixing the filters, a binder view and the way decks are saved (imported) but I am sure there are others.)
5) Leagues?
6) What can they tell the (non-new) player base to restore our confidence and morale following some recent fairly drastic changes (such as the pretty negative reactions to the beta, and the tacked on redemption fee maiming online recent set prices and the MTGO economy in general.)
7) What are their plans for online promo redemption cards in (paper) booster packs.
8) What is the deal with MTGOs obsession with Phantom events? Will this trend lead to something more interesting eventually or is it merely a way to increase the bottom line for WoTC?
Whoops! The blue deck was missing 4 Sigil of Sleep and 4 Hands of Binding (kind of the centerpieces of the deck actually -- a prettye egregious error).
And I realized Swirling Sandstorm shortly after submitting this article. It's featured prominently in an upcoming article I've already written :)
Some countermagic would be nice mostly against combo decks but I'd avoid anything with UU in the cost. I luckily never was hit by Austere Command and I've never seen other kinds of mass enchantment removal since they're usually too narrow.
Never had any mana issues actually. The deck is mostly GW with some U/R and very little B. There's more than enough manafixing from green ramp and non-rare lands. The only thing is that with a budget manabase you're going to be a turn slower because of all those CIPT lands, but honestly that's not a huge deal.
I ran Blightcaster from M14 and loved him. I completely forgot about Ajani's Chosen though! That one looks great.
For Vela token combo I've seen her go infinite with Time Siev + Thopter Assembly before. You can use her to make Palinchron + High Tide / Deadeye Navigator lethal, and same goes for Nim Deathmantle + Ashnod's Altar + Grave Titan / Puppeteer Clique / anything that makes a token.
Offline, a slightly modified list cuts the handful over $10+ cards for cheaper but equally powerful stuff (Maelstrom Nexus, Torpor Orb) to get it down to $108 on tcgplayer.com http://deckbox.org/sets/464653
Oh well, I guess Melira does work with Woodfall Primus (there's just 2 Persist creatures available to her, and the other, Aerie Ouphes, is bad enough). Still, even in that article's example, it's a deck based on ONE card (the Primus), and that doesn't seem consistent enough to be anything more than a fun experiment. They exile your Primus, your commander instantly becomes useless and all those sacrifice outlets dead draws. And by the way, only a few of them are actually combos, because doing the Primus dance just once per turn isn't going to win you games. Melira combo is about free infinite recursion, so you need 0-cost repeatable sacrifices (like her best pal Viscera Seer is).
I suppose you just witnessed the initial Melira craze, and I probably missed that entirely because I never, ever seen her as a commander.
Still disagreeing on Glissa (but I'm also still talking of her as a good stuff commander, not a commander with a strategy). I can't recall a table where I wouldn't want to kill an artifact every turn. It's not about artifact strategies: Sol Rings and Mana Crypts and whatnot are just everywhere. Then again, I never actually played her as a commander, so mine is just theory. Hey, why don't you give her a try for your next article? :)
1) What are they working on right now for the Beta?
1a) What is being pushed off until after the switch? (I know they've kind of said this already, just want to know if there's anything new here)
2) What's preventing them from performing the switch to the Beta next week?
3) ETA for Beta switch over.
4) With the next version upgrade, are they going to stay in house again?
5) What kind of growth has MTGO seen since DotP has come out? Numbers would be nice.
6) If MTGO is growing as much as I think it is, why can't the development team get more staff/support? (ok, they won't answer this one, but still...)
Who knows, maybe all these questions have been answered already, but I haven't seen them.
Really good stuff, you took Karona a direction I've never seen her go. I've seen her as either tokens or combo. Did you think about adding a couple of Counterspells so that you didn't run into the random blowout from Austere Command? Also, were there mana issues? Tough to run 5 color on a budget, but I see people try to do it all the time and occasionally get color hosed. There were also a couple of other enchantment based dudes in M14 (Ajani's Chosen, etc.) did you look into those?
In the vid with Vela you mention an inifinite token version of her, what is that? Every Vela deck I've seen has been bad.
Sorry I had to miss out this week. Can't wait to be back on after the Community Cup.
Related to that, The CCC members are going to have a Q&A Session with the MTGO staff. Anyone have any specific questions they want asked just let me know!
In the past, I didn't include Land base to the budget criteria and that create some confusions. Now, I'm using "up to 20 tix for Budget" and 21-40 tix for Semi-Budget" restrictions while brewing new decks. And I should have mentioned about this in the article...
Thragtusk can easily be in this deck as a replacement for Rancor and this deck still would be under 20 tix. I guess, I'm still not %100 used to the fact that Thragtusk is a budget card these days. Old habits don't go easy...
By the way, I also get a play set of "Zur the Enchanter" for the enchantment investment project as now Zur seems very promising for Modern, especially after the spoiler of Thassa as Zur can directly fetch her into play. And we still don't know what kind of other cheap enchantment creatures will be in the Theros.
Thanks for the advice I will definitely do that next time. Think I might go over some of the questions I see everyone who is new to gatherling ask at their first event as well.
Lands are exempt form the one buck restriction. So you have the full mana base of standard to work with.
maze end is around 3 tix or so. Is this an old article?
Thanks for the feedback. The list in the article is must closer to my ideal multiplayer list than my ideal 1v1 list. I don't run separate lists, though I do like that idea for the future.

Accorder's Shield or Slagwurm Armor for the crypt rats to beef their toughness without moving from mono black.
Great thinking about Zur. He was already good (and underrated), now can become great.
Thassa hints at amazing things. Enchantment Commanders!

Any chance of an overseas CCC at some point?
Yes Keya I have one.
WHY do they insist that the beta isn't fatally flawed?
No I know they will never honor such a question. Their blinders are too encompassing to acknowledge that many players are extremely unhappy with it.
Sorry I had to miss out this week. Can't wait to be back on after the Community Cup.
