Dual lands are overrated. I've developed superior lands that produce 6 colors (the 5 regular ones & yellow), come into play untapped with no drawbacks, and they are all commons. Booyah! Thank God for proxies. :o)
generally, I agree, but in this case I wanted to show how even two duals made a world of difference.
Of course, if money is no object, my deck is going to start with 4 Underground Seas, 4 Force of Wills and so forth. Especially after Shards hits, and Trinket Mage can get even more goodies.
Also thanks for the article. But I recommend not to put a list of what you are playing but what would you play if you have all the cards that you need. Why would anyone play blood crypt in the new old schoold deck while they can go for Badlands? I mean just list the best deck you may think and let players to adjust them with their card pool.
When wizards stops the circulation of MED2, if it is sooner than expected, these duals will increase in price like noone can imagine. Getting all the duals, I hope MTGO will help me to double my investment value ;) On the other hand, if they don't stop selling MED2 for years, everyone will have duals for 3tix each. If anyone willing to sell, I may pay 4-5 tix today. Think about it...

I think Forest Fire is a well chosen name, generic enough to keep the freedom in the decklists. I´m also glad that it fits well with my submission, so I don´t need to start again from scratch and I can only make a few adjustments.
Analysing better my previous submission I guess 21 lands was a little bellow the line for a precon, even an aggro one. Maybe it´s better to add one more mountain and the beetle wasn´t playing all that well with the other cards anyway.
My third submission is going to cut a few creatures, since I´m too heavy on them, and add a few utility spells. Interesting to see how tranquility plays fine with broken fall and crown of flames as they can just dodge it. Also I believe that while tinviper is a little weak for aggro, its first strike interacts well enough with fury and kindle on combat to deserve a slot for fun.
You've done a lot to help make MTGO PDC better. I know I have a temper but you've been patient. It's appreciated and every game/match you bring is fun and full of interesting twists.
I agree with your points Spike except the bad player part. Your decks are well designed and executed. I do like them and the way you play. You, atleast for me, offer good tech advice.
I do gl/hf and gg but I do have a temper. I concede when some of my rush decks get clamped down even when I have a 20% or better chance of winning. You have helped me improve my game and style.
I appreciate what you do for the PDC Community SpikeBoyM, thank you.
Some Spike type players are really anal about greetings since they get so emotionally attached to losing. It just has to do with competitive and emotionally vested the person is. I've noticed something like 25% of PDC players are bad mannered. The casual room has far fewer people who get upset at losing. It's certainly much rarer in the casual room than in an average PDC tournament. In PDC, it's something that you can expect to experience at least once every half dozen or so matches. These people just don't understand basic etiquette. Good Luck, Good Game are similar to hello and good bye. Like in any sort of social interaction, it's just the basic form of greeting. Some Spike type players and other people who may be sore losers will forget such formalities when upset. It's unfortunate human behavior. I've just learned the best thing to do is simply ignore them and go about your business. They can rage to themselves. =)
To be fair, I'm sure there are other drafts that I have or will not post because they train wreck like this one, but this one was the most recent, and spectacular!
I know it was bad. I was not going for filler within the article at all. I shared this draft because it is nice to see that other players are terrible, and well, as this was the last draft of SSE I would more than likely be doing, I wanted to kinda say good bye to it.
interesting article Alex, although I don't think you would fall into the category of "bad player". I think it is better said that you may feel you are a good player with some bad habits and they hinder your overall game at times. I know I consider myself to be a very average player and I can certainly relate to the idea of being too married to a particular style. I also agree that removing emotion from matches and taking loss responsibility can be two very important factors to winning. I go into every match I play believing I am going to win and should I lose that match I try to identify what occurred that led to that result. I try remove the idea that my luck or my opponent's luck has influence on the outcome and if I do what I am supposed to then it will go my way. I feel this helps me to focus on what I am doing and keeps my play errors low. I also tend to play like a robot most of the time and keep emotion out of games. focus on the play is always the most important thing to me (which is why i never chat in games beyond an opening GL) and I think that many players become much too emotionally invested in games as you point to. When I derail form these ideas I find I am much less successful in gameplay.
1st pick powah of fire 2nd Curse of Chains 3rd Corrosive Mentor 4th torture 5th Graveshel Axeshark 6th Bloodmark Mentor 7th Torpor DUst 8th Fists of Demigod 9th Fate Transfer (might be good) 10th Kindler 11th CInderbones 12th wisps
P2P1 - blight p2-p2 burn trail p2p3- Puncture Blast p2-p4 jaws of stone p5 - flask p6 - manamorphose p7 - oona gateguarden p8 - Ember gale (jesus the monster wont do anything) P9 - bogardan arsonists P10 - scarecrow (no contest) p11 - wanderwine
Pack 3 p1 - Cankerous Thirst (removal) p2 - Call of the Skybreaker (this is a good finisher) p3 - Rendcalw trow (need creatures) p4 - snuffers p5 - creckwood ghoul p6 - fank skulking p7 - Soul Reap (no way that 4 mana creature is better than removal) p8 - noogle
And here you would have a much better deck. Fate transfer works with the 4 mana creatures in eventide.
I'm not disgusted in this draft, but one of your previous drafts. As the editor of this site it would be good for P.R. if you actually awknowledged your opponent when they greeted you with a "goodluck and good job on the site" greeting instead of just ignoring them.
I'll disagree. I have definately seen worse drafts. I have done worse. to demonstrate why, I was wondering why JXC didn't nab the Runed Halo and Mystic Gate. :)
I think articles like this are important, though. Sure, you can read walkthroughs of great drafts - like SCG's premium stuff - but that is not what the rest of us see. Articles like this show what the rest of the world experiences online. That is really valuable - and I hope the WotC folks read it.
WotC: we hate waiting endlessly for queues to fire. We hate being unable to afford good decks and draft packs. We hate marginal prize support.
As for the article - sure, some of you may read this and say "sux to be you, JXC." The rest of us read this and say "sux to be us, sometimes." Reading that helps remind us that the amjority of us aren't in the top 10% in the world, and that makes our rare wins all that much sweeter.
BTW, MEDII snow covered mtns are still about $0.75.
Thx for the write-up, Tarmotog. I went broke after getting duals so I didn't have any tix left to enter the event and missed it, was looking forward to a report though.
The reason I don't usually say anything in games is because I feel it is force quite often. I am big on saying things with meaning behind them and to me, saying good luck, isn't always truthful. A lot of the times, I don't want my opponent to have good luck- I want that for myself. Selfish? Yes- but I'm being honest. Instead, I tend to say "Best of Luck" because it implies "I hope you have luck, but mine out lucks your luck." Same as above.
As far as the end of a game, I will say good game if I felt it was a good game. Games in which one person gets blown out, in my opinion, are not "good." I understand that this has become shorthand, but personally, I do not agree with the meaning. I tend to say "thanks for the game" which is a more honest response on my end.

Liked the article but many small factual errors. I also wish the dual lands were not so expensive as they basically caused me to quit Classic.
-people still Manaless Ichorid
-Manaless Ichorid runs 8 lands
-many mono colored or mono brown stax decks run 0 duals
-taplands were in 8th not 9th

Well I guess we all have our bad days. People shouldn't be judged when tilting which is the thing that was going on here.

You may have caught me on a bad day and for that I do apologize.
Why are some spikes so anal about saying good luck? It's not like it changes anything as luck doesn't exist, get that through your blownup head.

Is Forest Fire by Salgy. The winner was picked by WOTC.
I think power of fire was a lot better in SSS than it is now. I know I overvalued it in SSS, so it is possible that I undervalue it in SSE.
The draft was not one of my finest moments. I'm pretty ashamed of it actually.
MedII Snow-covered mountains are or should be considerably less than .75 cents each.
SSE DRAFT: P1P1 Power of Fire!
