WPF/Silverlight does not FORCE abstraction. Everything I can do in XAML I can do in C# and vice versa.
You could argue that it encourages shoddy code because of the tendency to load up a form's .cs files with all sorts of logic were it doesn't belong. Unless you have a strong MVP or MVVM pattern going its just a big ball of mud.
The way your wording it is just wrong. You can write a big mess of garbage with WPF/Silverlight just like you could with any other programming languages/technology. WPF/Silverlight does not correlate with quality at all.
Always nice to see a Legacy player making the crossing over the digital divide.
A good first article and I'm looking forward to more in depth analysis of how you see Classic differing from paper Eternal.
Well for starters in 2hg the game starts your opps to your right or left not above you and to your right or left and your ally is above or below you...not the way it used to be.
Admittedly, I haven't given much thought outside of the decklist I initially saw and the article you see here; the format is relatively unknown to me, and I have yet to have the time to explore all of the archetypes available
Ragman and Godot did a good job of explaining my point. If entering a month long league cost 30 tix (7 pack + 2 tix?), then WOTC makes the same profit from someone playing UNLIMITED games per month or that same person doing two four hour drafts. I would also bet that the number of people drafting more than twice a month because leagues aren't around is much greater than the number of people who completely avoid limited because leagues aren't around. Depending on the disparity WOTC could actually lose money by reinstating leagues if enough people move to leagues and stop drafting.
You better believe someone at WOTC did a cost/time analysis with regards to leagues. If there was profit to be made there (such that it was worth the time/bandwidth investment to recode and bring them back), you better believe they would bring leagues back as soon as possible.
Remember it's a business. Profit first, player satisfaction second.
I believe that leagues make it easier for new players to get into the game. Perhaps new players can be attracted to the game at a quicker rate with leagues than without leagues.
On the other hand, if new players are being attracted to the game at a rate that is pushing the limits of the underlying infrastructure, then it makes plenty of sense to push leagues off to such a time that they can be comfortably handled.
I dont think I'm going to be in this weekend my pc that I play MTGO on has caught a nasty virus and I need to back up all my files and reinstall the OS, I cant see me having it done in time :(
I left the "decks" wording in as I was ready to play and show the results for the second deck but I couldnt get any games, rather than change it I wanted it to stand out and make a point that there were no further games I could have played even if I wanted too.
"I was fortunate enough to be at the same shop as Godot and his son Oliver this weekend."
He's being modest, he wasn't just at the shop, he's the poker/Magic buddy of mine who took first place. 2x Baloth Woodcrasher, Hellkite Charger, and Oracle of Mui Daya certainly didn't hurt his chances, but 2-0, 2-0, 2-0, 2-0 is pretty impressive no matter the card pool.
Also, mconstant and I just launched a podcast, "Limited Resources." Check it out! http://mtgcast.com/?p=2703
At first I was skeptical about an article that didn't have 27 walk through type pictures and descriptions, but this thing was great.
I would even look forward to seeing more articles like this occasionally.
Regarding Allies: I think my biggest question/concerns are these:
1. What colors are best for an ally strategy, and can we reliably run 3+ colors in this format?
2. What about the allies that are playable by themselves? Won't the other drafters be taking these as decent creatures when you really need them for your deck to get that critical mass of allies?
Regarding point 1, it seems like you have to be base G just to be able to fix for more colors. #2 seems really problematic as you could be dedicating your draft to these allies and then not even get the best ones..
Will be interesting to see how it all pans out.
Regarding Landfall:
Landfall. Land. Fall. Dang this is a strong mechanic. It's like, you typically do this anyhow, but now you are being rewarded for it. I thought your scenarios were amazing, as they involved commons only and could and will be pulled off in draft from time to time. Sick. Very notable that Harrow is a key element in many of these exchanges... Harrow looks to be a really high pick.
Landfall seems strong as a normal mechanic but ridiculous when abused properly.
I was fortunate enough to be at the same shop as Godot and his son Olliver this weekend (I have known Ryan for years but only started playing magic again after he encouraged me about a year ago). It was great to see Ollie at his first event, he was a real champ and was encouraging the whole way. Really fun times had by all and I left with far more questions than answers about Zendikar..
That picture is the best, I waz prowd is going to be like my new catch phrase for if I won or not. So awesome.
Hmm 60 or 100, thats a difficult question to answer. Initially, I would figure that 100cs would be the better choice, considering the already established userbase for both parent formats (Pauper and 100CS respectively). I definately agree that Pauper Singleton is far more appealing an idea than PPS, as adding Prismatic to the formula is simply far far far too restrictive of a set of rules for my taste.
I ALSO think pauper 100cs sounds like a blast. I was wary of pauper prismatic singleton because i figured every deck would be the same, with the 20 best commons of every color. when you reduce restrictions, you open up a lot more space. i will build and find you!!!!
pauper singleton sounds like a blast i may give parlor tricks a look well with the edition of my painlands...mana fixing is nice and i paid for em might as well use them..lol
Giant Fan !
i really think its fate transfer..something like move all counters from one creature to another

What's wrong with multiplayer?
Admittedly, I haven't given much thought outside of the decklist I initially saw and the article you see here; the format is relatively unknown to me, and I have yet to have the time to explore all of the archetypes available
Right because that's a charge counter.
Power Conduit?
"It seems pretty ridiculous to me that they would ban arboria, while helm-leyline (and various others)remains legal."
I agree 100%. The bannings don't make sense nor do the lack of bannings. they both seem inconsistent.

I was thinking of Power Conduit but that wont work.
counters as in spells? misdirection maybe
counters like +1/+1 would be fate transfer
I believe there is a card that can move counters from one card to another, cant remember it off hand though.
I'm in the same boat as LE here I dont intend on bringing any more classic combos to the table but I will still give you a run for your money.
Thats if I get any mana unlike last week lol

Can't wait for your first draft report!

You also have my vote for Pauper Singleton. But would it be for 100 card or for 60 card? That I'm not sure yet.
