A new edition of Kings & Things has just been published by a different boardgame company. Look for it! I'm asking for a copy for Christmas.

Well, pick 1 and 2 had bombs that were non-blue, so I'd take those no matter what. Looking back at the packs with blue-o-vision switched on, I'm seeing Invisimancers, Sky-Eel Schools, Trinket Mage, Certarch, and Stoic Rebuttal. Solid but unexciting cards that wouldn't pull me away from another color. The best blue cards don't show till pack 3, where I see the excellent Riddlesmith and the "good but not as good as you think" Volition Reins, which is actually better in Sealed than in Draft.

Blue is a good color if you're playing in a setting where people underdraft it (which is very common), so you know you can get some quality evasive creatures even in late picks. But I don't force it like some people might, I take it if it seems more open than other colors and/or I don't get into something else strong first that's also open. Here I just saw a number of ok and good cards, not much in the way of great blue cards nor any packs with 4 blue cards making me think "this is wide open".

I am a bigger fan of the T-Dog now too, having tried it once I'm likely to try running them again. A common that sometimes takes over the game is not bad to have.

I remember the slang term "slag" from the Viz comics I used to get at one of the local magazine shops that carries a lot of european imports. I think Viz started as a parody of Beano comics? The "Fat Slags" were one of the regular fixtures in Viz at the time. I miss it, I should try and get a subscription or something.

We don't have the slang term "slag" over in the USA. I must admit it makes the card "Turn to Slag" sound an awful lot funnier. I guess in England, it no longer kills creatures, but it does turn them into sluts?

there was a play where you played your burst lightning when he just cast his Sorin markov, it wasn't even necessary as your teetering peeks would have done the same thing (he was tapped out) This would leave your burst to come in for 4 damage in another turn.

    Around 9:14

In the UK, as well as meaning molten metal, slag is a slang term describing a person (though it is typically applied to women) as someone who likes to share their love, as well as other things, frequently with many people. It is an insult, and is often associated with being said in a cockney accent (think Ray Winstone or Jason Statham) - "shut it you slaaaaaaaaag!".

  • All Lists Jace   14 years 30 weeks ago

Thanks. I love settlers too. My family cant get enough it. I also have a 80+ board game collection. all started with settlers.

My new favorite boardgame is galaxy trucker. If you get a chance you need to give it a try

Hey, couple of things. Firstly, control is certainly playable but you can't run it in a vacuum and you have to pick cards based on what you're expecting to face. the first thing to know is you're almost certainly going to be some combination of blue, black, and green. white has removal spells, stag, and razor hippo. not much else. here are some pick order thoughts:

p1p1: slice in twain is one of the best 'control' cards. green, blue, and black are the control colours. sylvok replica is more flexable and is a wall. trigon is a good card but better in aggressive decks than defensive ones.

p1p3: should have been palladium myr. in blue it's better than disperse because it lets you drop reins early if you have them. also your win conditions will probably be some green dinosaurs

p2p1: vat is really good. you still have time to pick up replicas and fume spitters and you'll almost certainly run removal. either way, existnce is your first white card so it's only a maybe. vat has a lot more potential

p2p4: arbalest is actually pretty good in control decks. a shortage of dorks is a problem but you'd run soliton and it gives extra utility to mana myr. you don't have any mana myr yet thogh so i'd take silve rmyr. instill seems fine but hitting 4 mana is going to be very important to you. silver helps. instill increases your dependence on 4 mana.

    p2p5: or real removal. arbalest : (

p3p4: sentinel is a house but you don't have enough ways to make it to late game. leaden myr or perilous myr seem better. you'r

    p3p6: nice!

p3p12: plated seastrider is pretty underated. might not be main board but comes in a lot. i havne't been counting artifacts though. also... 12th pick arrest? what is up?!?

all in all a nice draft. i think, as you spend more time chasing the archetype, you'll start rating the walls higher, and the counterspells lower. (halt is fine, if akward. stoic is not great...) basically windmill slam perilous myr. you mentioned getting to the late game being easy but, at that point hadn't actually aquired enough tools to get you there. ramp and walls! i think my favourite control decks, btw, are UB splashing green for horizon spell bombs, sylvok replicas, and reach on the already playable wall.

    peace

    ....porn.

Great article to wind down with. Also loved the Settlers reference. Grabbed that for the 360 on release day. Love it.

I got real lucky with the Overseers. When they were selling for their highest price I found a bot that didn't update and got them for .625 a piece. And thats when the speculating sellers were trying to get 6 tix a piece for them.

Here it means turn to molten metal. So I guess the vernacular would be "Destroy to its base elements." or "Kill." If there is a slang version beyond this I am unaware of it.

  • BYOA tips, plus Dr. Cat's Draft #19 - Go Big or Go Home!   14 years 30 weeks ago

Yup. I love the T-Dog. They're just bigger than anything else short of rare (afaik the only commons/uncommons that even trade 1 for 1 with them are molder beast, scrapdiver serpent and turn to slaaaaaaaaag - only slagging of these sees much limited play usually).

If you happen to equip one with bladed pinions or accorder's shield, your opponent really does need to slag it immediately, or they're just stuck.

They also make excellent proxies for primeval titans!

Addition; I'm not sure if the term "slag" has the connotations in the US as it does in the UK?

Not to burst any bubbles but 1750 IRL does not equal 1750 in MTGO. Due to the much larger player base in meat space real life ratings have a much higher range. On MTGO 1900 is about as high as it gets while paper ratings can break 2100. I kinda wish they ether completely took away MTGO ratings or had them matter for qualifying for some tournament.

Steve Sadin did quite well with Alpha T-Dog at GP: Tenn this last weekend. So it is probably a good card. :p

I can swear there was a con man movie where they used that quote. I also know ins Rounders Matt Damon used the Paul Newman quote.

  • All Lists Jace   14 years 30 weeks ago

I agree about the screen shot. The thing is since this happened ( I wrote the article 2 weeks ago) I haven't run into any other trolls. So it may be few and far between on trolls of the week.

As for not naming the troll I disagree. IRL if there is someone that acts like a tool. Word gets out and people stop playing him. There needs to be repercussions for bad behavior otherwise the troll is free to do whatever the want.

  • All Lists Jace   14 years 30 weeks ago

    4) Buying 100 Steel Overseers (ok it was really only 50 but it feels like a hundred).Yup hoarding/speculation is not my thing. Reminds me of a quote: If you walk into a room and you can’t spot the mark. Then you are the mark.

hehe I felt a little silly for paying 1.5 for each of my 4. Thankfully all I lost was a few tix. And that's a misquote of Paul Newman (Maxim this month actually printed it for posterity) the quote being: "If you're playing a poker game and you look around the table and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you." But yeah still applies. :)

  • All Lists Jace   14 years 30 weeks ago

I think that we have no obligations to trolls, why take the higher road everytime?

But, i think that you need a screenshot if you are going to call someone out, you know "Pics or it didn't happen"

  • State of the Program - November 26th 2010   14 years 30 weeks ago

G1: you have the geopede, drop the koth and expect your opponent to kill the mountain. He did but that was definitely the wrong play since he only takes one extra dmg if he kills the geopede and faces an empty board after killing the koth with the hexmage.

g2: you play the dragonlord and use koth ability on an untapped mounatain...... epic fail =D

  • All Lists Jace   14 years 30 weeks ago

If you are going to post a troll of the week, you have to keep with the naming....I might even reccomend going for a screen shot!

  • All Lists Jace   14 years 30 weeks ago

I love it! I too have the Jace envy :(

Also, no one likes a troll, but I still don't think it's a good idea to put their name out there for everyone to see.

  • State of the Program - November 26th 2010   14 years 30 weeks ago

Well lessons learned right? Slowing down a tad might make the decision process more clear next time. I do not play RDW but I could see the errors clearly as a spectator so all you need is to take the time to make sure you are on track.
