Just a quick comment, but Crusher Zendikon is there mainly because I run into so many Squadron Hawks and kor skyfishers or decks with various burn that i often have to trade my kuldotha rebirth tokens off, which seriously slows my clock down enough so that, having a midgame crusher is often enough power to push the game back into my favor....although now that you mention it, i should probably go and test Porcelain Legionnaire.
I played in the Planeswalker format event in the hope of getting in some neat, bare bones magic games, and a chance at the "any 3 packs" prize. I generally wish that I had not played in the event. It was super laggy, either I or my opponents diconnected frequently. The system dumped seemingly everyone two or 3 times all at once, based on seeing hundreds (thousands?) of __player x__ has joined the event/disconnected alerts when I signed back on each time.
I WAS fortunate enough to get 4 matches played, and my thanks to those I played for making the best of it, and sticking it out. Several of them, myself included, played through all 4 rounds, when there was no chance we could win anything (having lost a round). Sadly one of those matches was lost by my opponent due to time out, we were both booted offline for a generous portion of that round.
Overall the general concensus from the players I spoke to in the event chat was pretty negative, which is a shame for an event that COULD have done good things to help develop more of a sense of community online. Thankfully I escaped the worst of it myself, actually having played 4 matches vs. LIVE opponents, and not bot chains, multi accounts, or players that simply join/bailed to get a free pack. I agree strongly with amcpherson above on this point.
I hate to be that guy who has complaints about the quality of something that was free, but I think I may pass on the next one.
I have been following Smi77y's development of this deck. I have also been playing it for the last couple of weeks, though not to the success that Jake has had with it.
Even though Smi77y has put the Vengevines in the current version it is basically just a 4/3 haste creature that chains into Slime.
You very rarely cast two creatures a turn to trigger it's ability. This is not to say it will not happen, but I do not feel it is necessary. I have actually put one thrun in the maindeck and feel that he is just awesome. You very rarely want to chain him, but against control he is very good.
@Jake
Awesome job with the videos. My one suggestion would be to not let yourself tilt so easily. You do however recover quickly so I guess its not too bad. I would just maybe say that when you lose, sometimes they just have the cards. There are times where you seem to get the nut opener as well. The Valakut player, while making a couple of play errors didn't really play that bad, he just had what he needed.
Excellent article and I was looking forward to it since you mentioned it on Twitter last week.
ya vengevine seems nuts in this deck, even running a single bloodghast might be sweet without black mana, since once he hits play gives you infinite sacs.
I'm sorry Mr. Spikey McSpikerson... I was thought it was obvious that I was talking about CASUAL play. We Timmies and Vorthos' (Vorthi?) aren't obsessed with mana curves and I think turn 4 kills are a waste of both players time. I'd feel differently if it was a tournament, but 99% of the time I'm not in a tournament. I think Modern as a casual 60 card format will be much more accessible to players who are not heavily invested in Classic Set cards. That's all I was trying to say. If you're pointing out that the casual room will still be full of childish Spikes who like to beat up on folks who have the temerity to play Nicol Bolas Planeswalker because its a TOTALLY COOL CARD, whether it's tourney worthy or not... well I've become resigned to that.
Do you mind sharing the rest of your deck list? I was interested in your entire deck but wanted some help from your mana base so i can hopefully fix my 5 color decks.
No, that's exactly what Legacy is. People bring whatever deck they want. Terrible decks definitely do win on occasion. And it's fun because the meta is dozens of decks. No matter how tuned your deck is (or isn't) there will always be at least one piece of rogue jank with a positive matchup against you.
And to the previous poster: "As I've said before, I think casual players online need this format. There's simply a huge number of cards in my mostly Modern collection that are irrelevant even in casual Legacy or Classic."
Those cards will continue to be irrelevant in Modern. Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker is not suddenly a good card in Modern. Many of the decks in Modern will be Legacy ports, and they won't lose much. Every single good Legacy creature is Modern-legal. The Legacy to Modern transition means giving up 3 good blue spells (FoW, Daze, and Brainstorm), some accepted combo pieces (Grindstone, Show and Tell, Natural Order, LED), and the duals. But Modern decks will still be killing people on turn 4 with low curves. Spell Snare will be heavily played. Losing the duals is the only thing that truly hurts, since it hurts deck variety. (We also lose Wasteland, but that's pointless without fetches + duals in every deck.)
Hey Jacob! Thanks a lot for the awesome content you provide here every week. You and State of the Program are the two main reasons for me to visit puremtgo.
I've got one question concerning this deck: Have you thought about including a solitary Mimic Vat? It's one of the most versatile cards out there currently and provides the deck with even more options versus a variety of matchups. For example, you could use it to get one Acidic Slime out each turn to kill off Valakuts or produce a Baloth each turn for 4 life. Basically it's kind of like a Splinter Twin mechanic, but it doesn't die to removal of the creature and it can also be used to kind of leech off enemy creatures. Finally, the produced copies can also be used to Pod away for something else, like having a 2cmc creature, copying it, saccing it for exarch and from now on, you basically have unlimited exarchs due to Mimic Vat since whenever yours dies you can just throw another copy on the board.
It's a rather slow play, but with all the acceleration this deck has it should be possible to make it work. What do you think?
There are probably around 100 Overextended players (check the attendance number on the big event on Tuesday). The combined total was 120 last week, but that has some people that enter both events.
How many Legacy and Classic players are there regularly playing the respective formats? Compare the support that Overextended gets (it is a PRE) and Legacy as well.
In some cards that haven't moved in a while, even if only a handful of people become interested in the card, I believe that makes the prices change.
That format is amazing and you sure did put a whooping on him. I just wish a can make my land base run so fluid like yours does. I'm interested on seeing what you did with your mana base.
I don't understand the great land grab going on. If modern becomes a format, it is almost certain that they will be reprinting the Ravnica Duals. What they are going to do about Goyf, who will most likely skyrocket in value, is a little less clear (He surged in value when he was extended legal, if modern is eternal and the new extended, he will be one of the most sought after cards behind Jace TMS).
Modern is going to be huge because it will allow people to play terrible decks that can still win on occasion. Legacy/Classic is too powerful an environment for that, but I doubt Modern will be.
first i wanted to say that Karn is amazing and awesome that u got to use him with sooo much success i never pull a money rare that i can play and i actually see, i open a Jace 2.0 and had a solid blue white deck and never saw him 3 rounds lol. second i was suppose to get back to you about the clan stuff but i was in the hospital for some health issues and just got well enough to get online, hope all went well.
If you leave the foil release window open for say, only 2 weeks, then leave the non-foil versions on indefinitely, or an extended period of time, such as 6 months or so....then that shouldn't be a worry.
first of all, I really like your Video series, I personally think you produce some of the most valuable content for this site.
I just watched the first round and was already wondering about the end of round 1. Couldnt you just drop the Birthing Pod and chain your Cobra into an Exarch to untap the one previously locked down by the Frost Titan to just go off?
Quality content and gratz on the Karn, but please, for the love of God, stop passing and/or zooming from card to card on loop so quickly, I had to stop watching for a bit because I was getting motion sickness both on the UZULUD and the SOM drafts...
I agree, the folks who played the old extended will flock to Modern and there will be a lot of appeal for an eternal format that doesn't have FoW defining it. Also consider what such a format would look like 2 years from now, when it would have a lot more cards from the Mythic/Planeswalker era of card design.
As I've said before, I think casual players online need this format. There's simply a huge number of cards in my mostly Modern collection that are irrelevant even in casual Legacy or Classic.
Also on my wish list for the new client would be more ways to filter games. I'd like to play Modern Tribal. Or Block Wars. Or maybe even Standard Commander. I don't see what the obstacle is to giving us more choices.

Hey, thanks for the summary. Makes it a little easier to evaluate what M12 brings to the table and what might change due to that.

Just so I can give it a rating.

Of course I don't mind, but I thought you only needed the lands. Anyway, here's the rest:
11 Creatures
4x Bloodbraid Elf
4x Kitchen Finks
3x Broodmate Dragon
23 Other Spells
4x Vindicate
4x Esper Charm
4x Pernicious Deed
3x Lightning Helix
2x Terminate
2x Cruel Ultimatum
2x Bituminous Blast
2x Ajani Vengeant
15 Cards Sideboard
4x Loxodon Hierarch
3x Electrolyze
3x Firespout
2x Mystic Enforcer
2x Thought Hemorrhage
1x Lightning Helix
And that's it.

Actually the deck is very poor at returning vengevines, the deck actually plays more of a control/combo game than an aggro one imo.
At least that is what I have seen in my testing.
i noticed you ran zero Vengevine, going up against the deck multiply times the vines are what really make the deck shine.
Thank you for the comments, yeah I missed that untap play; huge misplay. Facepalm lol
